Visual illusions in Parkinson's disease: an interview survey of symptomatology.

BACKGROUND: Several types of visual illusions can occur in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the prevalence and types of specific illusions experienced by patients with PD remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the types of illusions. METHODS: A questionnaire of visual illusions was developed through a literature review in consultation with clinicians and neurologists. Based on the questionnaire, 40 consecutive patients with PD were asked a series of Yes/No questions regarding 20 types of visual illusions since the onset of PD. If participants answered 'Yes', they were then asked to…

Speech illusions and working memory performance in non-clinical psychosis.

Psychotic disorders are characterized by auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs), and research has shown that AVHs are linked to deficits in working memory. Our understanding of AVHs across the psychosis continuum is limited. To date, little research has tested whether hallucination proneness (HP) is linked with abnormalities on experimental multispeaker babble tasks. Few investigations have been conducted to determine how task performance might be linked to cognitive functioning. The objective of the current study is to better understand this empirical gap. A total of 70 adults (30 healthy cont

[Visual hallucinations and illusions, symptoms frequently misdiagnosed by the practitioner].

INTRODUCTION: Visual hallucinations or illusions are not a rare symptom. However, they are often unrecognized. Unawareness of the meaning of these symptoms often mislead both the patient and his physician. PURPOSE: To define and describe the types of visual illusions and hallucinations which can be commonly encountered in neuro-ophthalmological practice. METHODS: Overview article. RESULTS: Hallucinations are a perception not based on sensory input, whereas illusions are a misinterpretation of a correct sensory input. Both phenomenon can be due to medication or drug, or to an altered mental …

Chewing oscillopsia. A case of voluntary visual illusions of movement.

A 60-year-old man had a history of frontal headaches and chewing-related oscillopsia. Examination disclosed a retro-orbital epidermoid cyst that had eroded through the lateral orbital wall and under the temporalis muscle. The illusion of movement was due to mechanical displacement of the tumor mass and eye by contraction of the temporalis muscle. Removal of the cyst produced complete remission of the oscillopsia.

miRNA in Endometriosis-A New Hope or an Illusion?

Background: Endometriosis is a complex, estrogen-dependent condition that can significantly impact women's quality of life and fertility. Current diagnostic strategies remain invasive and often prolonged, demonstrating the need for reliable, non-invasive biomarkers. In this context, microRNAs (miRNAs), due to their stability in blood and regulatory roles in inflammation and cell proliferation, have emerged as promising candidates. Methods: This review systematically analyzes 17 studies published between 2010 and 2025 that investigated the diagnostic utility of circulating and tissue-based miRN

RETRACTED: Endometriosis and pregnancy: The illusion of recovery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The objective of this study was to investigate the feelings and experiences of infertile women with deep infiltrating endometriosis during and after a first pregnancy achieved by in-vitro fertilization (IVF). We conducted a qualitative monocentric study between May and November 2020. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with infertile women with deep infiltrating endometriosis who achieved a first pregnancy by IVF and delivered at least two years prior to the interview. Data analysis was performed using an inductive approach to identify recurrent categories and themes. Fifteen interviews

The perception threshold of the vestibular Coriolis illusion.

BACKGROUND: The vestibular Coriolis illusion is a disorienting sensation that results from a transient head rotation about one axis during sustained body rotation about another axis. Although often used in spatial disorientation training for pilots and laboratory studies on motion sickness, little is known about the minimum required rotation rate to produce the illusion. OBJECTIVE: This study determined the perception threshold associated with the Coriolis illusion. METHODS: Nineteen participants performed a standardized pitching head movement during continuous whole-body yaw rotation at rat

An fMRI study of the reverse perspective illusion.

"Reverse perspective" is a powerful visual illusion similar to the hollow mask illusion, but more interesting in producing the perception of an illusory motion in a stationary picture. It is caused by conflict between motion parallax and pictorial depth cues in 3D "relief" paintings built with depth inversion. Here we report the measurement of brain activation using fMRI in response to a reverse perspective (RP) object, as well as a normal perspective, 3D-relief object ("shadow-box", SB) and a 2D painting of the same architectural scene. The stimuli were presented to 10 subjects in static and

Clinical trials and the response rate illusion.

Clinical trial outcome data can be presented and analyzed as mean change scores or as response rates. These two methods of presenting the data can lead to divergent conclusions. This article explores the reasons for the apparently divergent outcomes produced by these methods and considers their implications for the analysis and reportage of clinical trial data. It is shown that relatively small differences in improvement scores can produce relatively large differences in expected response rates. This is because differences in response rates do not indicate differences in the number of people w

Attention, dyslexia, and the line-motion illusion.

Dyslexic readers have been found to have a reduced line-motion illusion. This has been interpreted as evidence for an attention deficit of magnocellular origin. We show that this interpretation has severe problems: 1) to link reduced line-motion illusion to attention overlooks other factors, 2) to link the line-motion illusion specifically to the magnocellular system is problematic because the illusion can be obtained with isoluminant stimuli, 3) reduced illusory motion in dyslexic individuals may reflect sensory deficits, and 4) to link dyslexia specifically to the magnocellular system is in

The illusion of invariant quantities in life histories.

Life-history theory attempts to provide evolutionary explanations for variations in the ways in which animal species live their lives. Recent analyses have suggested that the dimensionless ratios of several key life-history parameters are the same for different species, even across distant taxa. However, we show here that previous analyses may have given a false picture and created an illusion of invariants, which do not necessarily exist; essentially, this is because life-history variables have been regressed against themselves. The following question arises from our analysis: How do we ident

[The study of illusion in flight on flight pilots].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the characteristics of illusion in flight in fighter pilots. METHOD: A survey about illusion in flight was performed in 81 pilots who were under physical examination for modification to equipment of high performance aircraft. RESULT: 1. Among 81 pilots, there were history of illusion in flight in 91.4% (74/81) cases. There were history of inclination illusion in 74 cases, rotation illusion in 1 case, inversion illusion in 1 case and pitch illusion in 1 case. 2. Among the 74 cases, 85.1% (63/74) claim relations with flying subjects, 81.1% (60/74) with distribution of att

Illusion and reality in R. D. Laing.

R. D. Laing never fully brings together his extraordinary empathy for schizophrenic individuals and his critical view of schizogenic families. In his writings, family and social interactions increasingly dissolve into subjective "scenarios," and ultimately, "inner space" becomes the source of the redeeming light. This development has unfortunate psychiatric, philosophical, and political implications.

Neural Underpinnings of the Continuity Illusion in Musicians.

The continuity illusion occurs when a sound is perceived as continuous through noise-filled interruptions and has been indexed neurophysiologically as reduced auditory theta band (4-8 Hz) power and phase-locking at the interruption boundaries. Here, we examined the behavioural and neurophysiological differences between musicians (n = 16) and nonmusicians (n = 16) as they listened to trisyllabic words and classical music with noise interruptions. Our aim was to assess two competing hypotheses: (H1) because of their enhanced ability to detect acoustic gaps, musicians are less likely to perceive

Peak Fiction: XRPD and the Illusion of Novelty.

This viewpoint addresses the growing use of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data to support patent claims on crystalline forms of pharmaceutical compounds. XRPD patterns are inherent material properties, not inventions. We demonstrate that different sample preparations and holders impact the XRPD peaks returned for the same commercially available sample. Thus, treating XRPD peaks as stand-alone proof of novelty weakens patentability standards across the field of medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical intellectual property.
