BACKGROUND: The conjugate vaccine against serogroup A Neisseria meningitidis (NmA), MenAfriVac, was first introduced in mass vaccination campaigns of 1-29-year-olds in Burkina Faso in 2010. It is not known whether MenAfriVac has an impact on NmA carriage.
METHODS: We conducted a repeated cross-sectional meningococcal carriage study in a representative portion of the 1-29-year-old population in 3 districts in Burkina Faso before and up to 13 months after vaccination. One district was vaccinated in September 2010, and the other 2 were vaccinated in December 2010. We analyzed 25 521 oropharyngea

Vaccination remains among the most effective public health interventions, but its impact increasingly depends on public trust and a reliable information environment. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, misinformation became a major obstacle to vaccine uptake and disease control. The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI)-including synthetic text generators, conversational chatbots, deepfake images, synthetic audio, and AI-generated videos-has changed how misinformation can be produced, personalized, and disseminated. This Perspective argues that AI-ge

In this article, I examine the history of the concept of herd immunity, beginning with British epidemiologists in the 1920s and ending with the controversy surrounding it during the COVID-19 pandemic. I argue that competing historical and contemporary understandings of herd immunity reveal an underlying tension between observing the effects of infection-acquired herd immunity on the population dynamics of infectious diseases and actively cultivating it through immunisation. Originally offering an explanatory mechanism for the rise and fall of epidemics, the concept soon became entangled with s

OBJECTIVE: Calculate the critical proportion (Pc) for achieving herd immunity based on a 2009 population study conducted in Medellin, Colombia, by age, globally and disaggregated by sex, location, and socioeconomic stratum.
METHODS: A survey of seroprevalence in the population was conducted by means of a random sample of 2 124 individuals aged 6 to 64 that was representative of age, sex, and location. The basic reproduction number was estimated using a quadratic regression of the average IgG titers for rubella by age in unvaccinated individuals with titers greater than or equal to 15 IU/ml. T

Parallel to the diffusion of conjugated pneumococcal vaccine in children, several studies have shown a reduction of the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease both in the vaccinated and in the unvaccinated. Such an observation is not a surprise if one considers that a similar phenomenon has taken place also after the mass introduction of Hib vaccine, at its turn a conjugated polysaccharide vaccine. Another observation is that also the carriage of vaccinal pneumococci was reduced in both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, while in some cases the carriage of non-vaccinal serotypes, definit

Immunization programs never will usurp the central role of sound management practices and good nutrition in the disease prevention program of the commercial dairy operation. However, certain immunizations against diseases such as brucellosis, leptospirosis, and clostridial infections should be routine. Other diseases such as infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine virus diarrhea, parainfluenza-3, colibacillosis, and pasteurellosis should be considered if it can be determined that the herd is infected chronically. The present knowledge of other disease conditions, vaccine effectiveness and sa

We assess the feasibility of reaching the herd immunity threshold against SARS-CoV-2 through vaccination, considering vaccine effectiveness (VE), transmissibility of the virus and the level of pre-existing immunity in populations, as well as their age structure. If highly transmissible variants of concern become dominant in areas with low levels of naturally-acquired immunity and/or in populations with large proportions of < 15 year-olds, control of infection without non-pharmaceutical interventions may only be possible with a VE ≥ 80%, and coverage extended to children.

There is an urgent need for effective countermeasures against the current emergence and accelerating expansion of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Induction of herd immunity by mass vaccination has been a very successful strategy for preventing the spread of many infectious diseases, hence protecting the most vulnerable population groups unable to develop immunity, for example individuals with immunodeficiencies or a weakened immune system due to underlying medical or debilitating conditions. Therefore, vaccination rep

BACKGROUND: Oral cholera vaccination is an approach to preventing outbreaks in at-risk settings and controlling cholera in endemic settings. However, vaccine-derived herd immunity may be short-lived due to interactions between human mobility and imperfect or waning vaccine efficacy. As the supply and utilization of oral cholera vaccines grows, critical questions related to herd immunity are emerging, including: who should be targeted; when should revaccination be performed; and why have cholera outbreaks occurred in recently vaccinated populations?
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We use mathematical mo

Phasor measurement units (PMU) are currently considered as an essential step toward the future smart grid due to their capability in increasing the power system's situation awareness. Due to their high costs and limited resources, optimal placement of PMUs (OPP) is an important challenge to compute the minimum number of PMUs and their optimal distribution in the power systems for achieving full monitoring. The coronavirus herd immunity optimizer (CHIO) is a novel optimization algorithm that emulates the flock immunity strategies for the elimination of the coronavirus pandemic. In this research

BACKGROUND: GII.4 noroviruses are a significant source of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, causing the majority of human norovirus outbreaks. Evolution of the GII.4 major capsid protein occurs rapidly, resulting in the emergence of new strains that produce successive waves of pandemic disease. A new pandemic isolate, GII.4 2012 Sydney, largely replaced previously circulating strains in late 2012. We compare the antigenic properties of GII.4 2012 Sydney with previously circulating strains.
METHODS: To determine whether GII.4-2012 Sydney is antigenically different from recently circulating stra

Our aim was to examine the potential incremental impact of vaccinating boys against human papillomavirus (HPV) on vaccine-type infection in females and males, using an individual-based HPV transmission-dynamic model. Under base assumptions (vaccine efficacy = 99%, duration of protection = 20 years, coverage = 70%), vaccinating 12-year-old boys, in addition to girls, resulted in an incremental reduction in HPV-16/18 (HPV-6/11) incidence over 70 years of 16% (3%) in females and 23% (4%) in males. The benefit of vaccinating boys decreased with improved vaccination coverage in girls. Given the imp

Understanding how population structure shapes viral transmission remains challenging because most in vitro models assume well-mixed conditions and lack spatial structure. We present a Herd-Immunity-on-a-Chip (HIC) platform-a 444-chamber microfluidic network that recreates structured populations-and apply it to human coronavirus 229E infecting MRC-5 fibroblasts. By varying initial inoculum (I0), susceptible density (S0), cell motility, and the fraction of non-susceptible cells (U0), we decode how seeding, density, immunity and movement reshape outbreak trajectories. Increasing S0 or I0 raised l

The origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains enigmatic. It is likely to be a continuum resulting from inevitable mutations and recombination events. These genetic changes keep developing in the present epidemic. Mutations tending to deplete the genome in its cytosine content will progressively lead to attenuation as a consequence of Muller's ratchet, but this is counteracted by recombination when different mutants co-infect the same host, in particular, in clusters of infection. Monitoring as a function of time the genome sequences in closely related cases is critical to anticipate the future of

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to epidemiologically assess rubella herd immunity as a function of time, age and gender in Japan, with reference to the recent 2012-2014 rubella epidemic.
DESIGN: This study is a retrospective seroepidemiological analysis.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The susceptible fraction of the population was examined as a function of age and time. The age at infection was assessed using reported case data.
RESULTS: Whereas 30 years ago rubella cases were seen only among children, the median (25-75th centiles) age of cases in 2014 was elevated to 32.0 (17.0-42.0) years among males and 27.

PURPOSE: Measles antibody levels decline after MMR vaccination, raising concerns about individual protection and maintenance of herd immunity. In Finland, MMR vaccinations started in 1982, and only sporadic measles cases have been observed since the late 1980s. This suggests that a high proportion of individuals are unlikely to transmit measles. We examine the sustainability of herd immunity by inferring the antibody threshold sufficient to interrupt measles transmission.
METHODS: We utilized measles antibody data collected after the second MMR vaccine dose from 157 individuals in a Finnish M
