An Aspergillus fumigatus immunodiffusion test was performed biweekly for one year on 80 hospitalized patients with acute leukemia to determine if serologic conversion accompanied clinical aspergillosis. We describe a simple, sensitive, and relatively inexpensive counterimmunoelectrophoretic technique for detection and estimation of myoglobin. The test can be completed within 90 min, compared with 12-48 h required by double immunodiffusion. With the counterimmunoelectrophoretic technique we could detect myoglobin in concentrations of 2-3 mg/liter, while the detection limit by double immunodiffusion was about 9 mg/liter.

The author discusses the result that may be expected in clinical medicine from an electro-immunodiffusion method for the detection of alpha-foetoprotein. The samples studied were obtained from pregnant women, patients with liver cell carcinoma or severe digestive diseases, whether malignant or not, and a few amniotic fluids and sera obtained from the umbilical cord. This simple, rapid method is characterized by a sensitivity threshold of about 300 ng/ml and permits one to detect about 75% of cases of liver cell carcinoma.

Quantitative immunodiffusion (QID) and complement fixation (CF) methods were compared for their agreement in detecting coccidioidal antibodies. For these studies, we assayed 719 sera from 181 patients with coccidioidomycosis. Over 60% of the specimens had CF results of 1:2 to 1:256. A total of 43 patients had five or more specimens obtained over periods of between 1 and 8 years. The author has used the counter-immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) comparatively with the routine bacteriologic method, in 220 pneumococcal meningitis at Dakar hospital. The omni-serum of Statens Serum Institute Copenhague applied to CSF, leads to detection of the quasi whole of antigens. The use of serums-pools is not essential in routine because his small supplement of information. The score of CIE is the same that the results of bacteriologic method, but the CIE is alone positive in 10,9% of cases. The detection of antigens in blood is interesting for the diagnosis (+ 2,3%) and the prognosis.
