Gambling disorder (GD) is a psychiatric condition that was recently recategorized as a non-substance-related addiction in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders. Criminal activity is commonly associated with gambling; however, few empirical studies to date have examined sociodemographic and psychological variables in this population. In this study, we explored criminal behavior history in a sample of consecutively recruited treatment-seeking gamblers (n = 382) and compared subjects with a history of illegal acts (n = 103, 26.9%) to those with no criminal record (n = 2

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are psychiatric disorders characterized by the failure to resist an impulse or by the temptation to perform an act that is harmful to oneself or to others.
METHODS: ICDs, including pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive eating and shopping, can occur as a complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) together with other behavioral disorders, including dopamine dysregulation syndrome. This review is based on a literature search updated to May 2017, focusing on the epidemiology, clinical features, and therapeutic options of ICDs associated wi

In some patients, impulse control behaviours can be triggered by dopaminergic replacement therapy, particularly dopamine agonist drugs: hobbyism, punding (stereotyped behaviours), compulsive buying, binge eating disorder, pathological gamgling, hypersexuality, hedonistic homeostatic dysregulation syndrome ... The pathogenesis of these behaviours: is not well understood, but likely involves aberrant changes in the dopaminergic pathways that mediate motivation i.e., a dopaminergic "overdose" in meso-cortico-limbic circuits, An early diagnosis is difficult, but mandatory to prevent the occurrence

Impaired decision-making is a key-feature of many neuropsychiatric disorders. In the present study, we examined task performance in a healthy population consisting of those whose scores indicated high and low impulsivity on several behavioral decision-making tasks reflecting orbitofrontal functioning. The measures included tasks that assess decision-making with and without a learning component and choice flexibility. The results show that subjects high on impulsivity display an overall deficit in their decision-making performance as compared with subjects low on impulsivity. More specifically,

Self-mutilative behavior (SMB) is presented as a specific form of inwardly directed aggressiveness which is thought to be associated with problems of impulse control. Conceptual problems concerning impulsivity and impulsive aggression are discussed. Among different forms of dyscontrolled behavior, SMB is of special heuristic interest because of distinction can be made between patients committing impulsive and those committing premeditated self-harming actions. Psychometric and biological measures of impulsivity and aggressiveness were assessed in self-mutilators in comparison to depressives an

BACKGROUND: Impulsive-compulsive behavior disorders (ICBDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) include impulse control disorders (ICDs) and compuls … ion, suggesting that heightened self-reported interoception and interoceptive insight may reinforce impulsive behaviors in PD via enhanced bodily signal salience. This study contributes to understanding the characteristics of ICDs in PD, implicating reward-related circuits such as the insula and anterior cingulate cortex.

AIM: To explore white matter (WM) tracts linked to impulsivity using the diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) connectometry method.
METHODS: We analyzed 218 healthy participants from the Leipzig Study for Mind-Body-Emotion Interactions database. Impulsivity correlations with DMRI-derived WM changes were assessed using Urgency-Premeditation-Perseverance-Sensation (UPPS) Impulsive Behavior Scale subscales: lack of perseverance (PE), lack of premeditation (PM), sensation seeking (SS), and negative urgency. DMRI data were processed using connectometry, adjusting for sex and age, to examine…

OBJECTIVE: Impulsivity contributes to many clinically relevant behaviors impacting youth. A scoping review was conducted to characterize existing research using the Urgency, Premeditation (lack of), Perseverance (lack of), Sensation Seeking (UPPS) Impulsive Behavior Scales in youth populations, to review the psychometric and validity data of UPPS, and to summarize findings related to sex/gender and diagnostic populations of youth.
METHOD: PubMed, Embase, and PsycNET databases were searched from January 1, 2001 (original UPPS publication) through October 2, 2022, according to PRISMA extension …

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Impulsivity persists in adults with ADHD and might be the basis of much of the impairment observed in the daily lives of such individuals. The objective of this study was to address the presence, and more importantly, the three dimensions of impulsivity: attentional, non-planning and motor, in how they may relate to neuropsychological mechanisms of impulse control. We studied a sample of 50 adults with ADHD and 51 healthy comparison controls using the Barratt Impulsivity Scale Vers

The present study explores the relation among 4 personality traits associated with impulsive behavior and alcohol abuse. Personality traits were measured using the 4 subscales of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS; S. P. Whiteside & D. R. Lynam, 2001). The UPPS and measures of psychopathology were administered to clinical samples of alcohol abusers high in antisocial personality traits (AAPD), alcohol abusers low in antisocial personality traits (AA), and a control group (total N = 60). Separate analyses of variance indicated that AAPDs had significant elevations on all 4 UPPS scales, whe…

Objectives: Alcohol abuse is known to result in behavioral impairments (such as increased impulsivity, aggressive, and suicidal behavior), but the neurobiological basis for these behavioral impairments remains unknown. The objective of this review is to propose a neurobiological basis for alcohol-induced aggression, impulsivity, and suicidal behavior. Methods: Search was done by accessing PubMed/Medline, EBSCO, and PsycINFO databases. The search string used was "(Alcohol OR Alcoholism* OR Alcohol Abuse) AND (Behavior* OR Behavioral Impairment or Disorder) AND (Oxidative Stress OR Reactive Oxyg

Hypothalamic hypocretin (orexin) peptides mediate arousal, attention, and reward processing. Fibers containing orexins project to brain structures that govern motivated behavior, including the ventral tegmental area (VTA). A number of psychiatric conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders, are characterized by deficits in impulse control, however the relationship between orexin and impulsive behavior is incompletely characterized. The effects of systemic or centrally administered orexin receptor (OXR) antagonists on measures of impulsive-l…

AIMS: Problem gambling can create major financial, emotional and sometimes criminal problems for an individual. This study prospectively investigated the association between impulsive behavior at age 7 and the development of life-time problem gambling by adulthood. We also examined the specificity of any observed association between impulsive behaviors and problem gambling by conducting parallel analyses examining the link between respondents' shy/depressed behavior in childhood and later problem gambling.

A person's impulsive actions are characterized by a lack of sufficient planning or an assessment of possibly harmful consequences. An impulse control disorder can be diagnosed if such actions occur frequently, even in low-stress situations. In psychiatry there are a number of syndromes that are associated with an impulse control disorder. Neurobiological findings point to a reduced turnover of serotonin in the brain of persons with an impulse control disorder and aggressive behaviour. However, a reduced turnover of serotonin is also found in persons who can consume immoderate amounts of alcoho

Assessed the relative predictive validity of obvious (0), neutral (N), and subtle (S) items of the MMPI Ma scale (N = 86 males). Subtle-obvious ratings were compared to criteria in the three types of measurement delineated by Cattell, namely, questionnaire, life-history, and objective tests. Ma-O was correlated positively with the Experience Seeking factor of the Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS) as well as time taken and errors on the Porteus Maze, while Ma-S was correlated positively with the Thrill and Adventure Seeking factor of the SSS and the biographic questionnaire. Ma-N, on the other hand

The main aim of the article was to show the importance of impulsivity as a background to aggressive behaviour displayed by people on the schizophrenia spectrum with particular attention to its biological determinants, including genetic ones. Imaging tests of the central nervous system allow for locating the centres responsible for particular types of impulsiveness and for modulating impulsive reactions. Excessive impulsivity may be attributed to disturbances in serotoninergic, dopaminergic, and noradrenergic neurotransmission, as well as disrupted functioning of other neurochemical pathways du
