An isotope dilution (ID) procedure for the determination of methylmercury (MMHg) in biological samples using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer as detector after the capillary gas chromatographic separation (CGC/ICPMS) has been developed. MIC values and inhibition zone diameters for penicillin, cefotaxime, and erythromycin where determined in 75 consecutive Streptococcus pneumoniae blood isolates by microdilution (PASCO), disc-diffusion and Etest. Using the Etest, 40% and 29.3% of the isolates showed low- or high-level resistance to penicillin and erythromycin respectively, whereas 9.3% were intermediate to cefotaxime. There is an urgent need for reference methodologies to assign SI traceable values to quality control (QC) materials for protein biomarkers to validate biochemical tests currently used in disease diagnosis and patient-specific therapeutics. Here we describe a novel methodology specifically developed for the SI traceable quantification of human serum ferritin light chain (FTL), an established biomarker for the diagnosis of iron-related disorders such as hemochromatosis. Natural and 34S isotopically enriched human FTL standards were recombinantly expressed using the HEK-293 mammalian cell system.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim was to measure cardiac output while rebreathing tidal volumes, by correction of soluble gas uptake for gaseous mixing.
DESIGN: Simultaneous measurements of cardiac output by indocyanin green and freon 22 uptake during rebreathing were made. Mixing for a hypothetical gas of identical gaseous diffusivity to freon 22 was calculated by interpolation between concentrations of two insoluble gases, helium and sulphur hexafluoride. Mixing efficiency was estimated by the number of breaths for helium to become 99% equilibrated with lung gas (n99-He).
