The absorptive capacities of 4 commercially available tear test strips were determined and compared with 5-mm X 40-mm strips of #41 filter paper. Significant differences in the absorption of water over a given time interval were found in 3 of the groups tested. Major inconsistencies were found only within 1 lot of tear test strips from a single manufacturer. Herein, a series of compact anthracene carboxyimide (ACI) based donor-acceptor dyads were prepared by substituting bulky aryl moieties with various electron-donating ability to study the triplet-excited state properties. The ISC mechanism and triplet yield of the dyads were successfully tuned via structural manipulation. A direct general method for the preparation of α-oxyacylated vinyl ketones using Koser's hypervalent iodine reagent is reported. A variety of acyloxy groups from long-chain aliphatic, aromatic, α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids have been installed efficiently for the first time. The oxyacylated adducts were used for the preparation of densely functionalized chiral δ-lactones and cyclopentenes using carbene organocatalysis.

Selective epoxidation of cinnamates versus crotonate was used to detect hydrophobic binding of the cinnamates in the transition states with hydrophobic oxidizing agents in water solution. With peracids as oxidants, no such effect was seen, in accord with the calculated geometries of epoxidation in which the hydrophobic groups of substrate and oxidant could not stack. Plasma haemoglobin was assayed with the non-carcinogenic reagent phenothiazine. This method is sensitive and allows the measurement of plasma haemoglobin concentrations in the range 4-500 mg/l with a within-run CV of 2.1%, and a between-run CV of 4.3%. A method is described for the determination of vitamin D3 in a liquid multivitamin preparation by liquid chromatography. Samples are purified on a disposable reverse phase extraction (SPE) column with a mobile phase of methanol-2-propanol (97 + 3) and are analyzed on a Zorbax ODS (5 micron) column with an acetonitrile-2-propanol-water (90 + 8 + 2) solvent system.
