Current phototherapy practice on Java, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: In Indonesia, the burden of severe hyperbilirubinemia is higher compared to other countries. Whether this is related to ineffective phototherapy (PT) is unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of phototherapy devices in hospitals on Java, Indonesia. METHODS: In 17 hospitals we measured 77 combinations of 20 different phototherapy devices, with and without curtains drawn around the incubator/crib. With a model to mimic the silhouette of an infant, we measured the irradiance levels with an Ohmeda BiliBlanket Meter II, recorded the distance between device and

Nutrition transition in west Sumatra, Indonesia.

Indonesia, like many developing countries, is experiencing a rapid urbanisation characterised by double burden of disease in which non communicable diseases become more prevalent while infectious diseases remain undefeated. This report describes the nutrition transition which occurred to Indonesia after economic transformation in 1966, based on information gathered from published reports. The major sources of information used in this paper were: a) a series of Indonesian National Socio-Economic Surveys (SUSENAS) conducted regularly by Central Bureau of Statistics (which provided a coherent pic

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--Indonesia, 1995.

In 1988, Indonesia (1991 population: 181 million) adopted the goal of eradicating poliomyelitis by the year 2000. Although routine coverage with three doses or oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV3) has been >90% among 1-year-old children since 1991, cases of polio continue to be reported. To interrupt poliovirus transmission, National Immunization Days (NIDs) were conducted during September 13-17 and October 18-22, 1995, resulting in vaccination of >22 million children aged <5 years (representing approximately 100% of the target population). NIDs are planned for September 10-14 and October 15-19, 199

Treponemal serology on Bali Island, Indonesia.

As part of a multidisciplinary study of the population of Bali, Indonesia, treponemal serology was carried out on 2452 serum samples from subjects of both sexes. Sera reactive to the Treponema pallidum immobilisation test (TPI) were found in 81 (3.3%) subjects with a male prevalence of 4% and a female prevalence of 2%. All the reactive sera were from villagers. Of 1118 students sampled in various towns, none had reactive TPI tests. The prevalence of reactive sera varied greatly from one village to another; up to 50% of the sera examined were reactive. Geographical and socioeconomic analyses of

Continuum of care in maternal, newborn and child health in Indonesia: Evidence from the Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and child health improved considerably due to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. However, the rate of preventable death worldwide remains high. Nevertheless, implementation was insufficient in low- and middle-income countries, including Indonesia. The study aims to assess the relationships between continuum of care (CoC) in maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) services and levels of care in Indonesia, examine the distribution of utilisation and investigate the associations between CoC in MNCH. DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were derived from the rece

Continuity of maternal healthcare services utilisation in Indonesia: analysis of determinants from the Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey.

OBJECTIVE: WHO recommends that every pregnant woman and newborn receive quality care throughout the pregnancy, delivery and postnatal periods. However, Maternal Mortality Ratio in Indonesia for 2015 reached 305 per 100 000 live births, which exceeds the target of Sustainable Development Goals (<70 per 100 000 live births). Receiving at least four times antenatal care (ANC4+) and skilled birth attendant (SBA) during childbirth is crucial for preventing maternal and neonatal deaths. The study aims to assess the determinants of ANC4 +and SBA independently, evaluate the distribution of utilisation

Pharmacy Education and Transition to Practice in Indonesia.

Pharmacy education in Indonesia is expected to prepare pharmacists for a wide range of roles in a health system where medicines are central to prevention and treatment. Yet workforce studies describing capability gaps, uneven distribution, and variation in service delivery across sectors and regions suggest that ensuring new graduates are ready for practice remains a persistent challenge. This evidence-informed narrative review describes the pharmacist education pipeline in Indonesia and maps how competency expectations are specified, taught and assessed across the main stages of education and

Jembrana disease in Indonesia: An updated review.

Jembrana illness is an infectious disease that affects Balinese cattle in Indonesia. This disease is caused by the Jembrana disease virus (JDV), a lentivirus of the Retroviridae family. It was initially detected in 1964 in Jembrana Regency, Bali, Indonesia. Bali cattle have been widely disseminated throughout the Indonesian archipelago, and there is evidence that Jembrana disease has affected Bali cattle on the islands of Bali, Sumatra, and Java. During the acute stage, JDV is present in secreted fluids such as saliva, milk, and nasal secretions. There is no evidence of clinical illness recurr

The Impoverishing Effect of Tobacco Use in Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking households in Indonesia diverted a significant share of their budget to tobacco. Tobacco expenditure is deemed unproductive, as it crowds out resources from essential commodities and increases health care expenditure driven by tobacco-induced diseases. Therefore, despite having adequate resources, some smoking families in Indonesia may spend less on basic needs, which inadvertently puts their standard of living below the poverty line. AIMS AND METHODS: Employing data from 2021 (March) Indonesia's Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), this research aims to quantify the impoveri

Neurological Disease Associated with Chikungunya in Indonesia.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is recognized but rarely considered as a cause of central nervous system infection in endemic areas. A total of 244 patients with acute meningoencephalitis in Indonesia were retrospectively tested to identify whether any CHIKV infection was associated with neurological manifestations, especially in provinces known for CHIKV endemicity. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood specimens were tested using CHIKV-specific real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and IgM ELISA, alongside a panel of neurotropic viruses. We report four cases of suspected or confi

Chikungunya in Indonesia: Epidemiology and diagnostic challenges.

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is often overlooked as an etiology of fever in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Lack of diagnostic testing capacity in these areas combined with co-circulation of clinically similar pathogens such as dengue virus (DENV), hinders CHIKV diagnosis. To better address CHIKV in Indonesia, an improved understanding of epidemiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic approaches is needed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Acutely hospitalized febrile patients ≥1-year-old were enrolled in a multi-site observational cohort study conducted in Indonesia from 2013

The Emergence of Non-communicable Disease in Indonesia.

Based on data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health Information Center, the estimated population of Indonesia in 2016 was approximately 258,704,986 people, consisted of 129,988,690 men and 128,716,296 women. This number of Indonesian population represents young population since the proportion of population aged 0-14 years is more than that aged >14 years. Meanwhile, the proportion of population aged 50 years and above is significantly reduced, which is thought to be due to high mortality rate in the middle-aged population. The mortality rate in  Indonesia is dominated by non-communicable dise

Phylogeography of the current rabies viruses in Indonesia.

Rabies is a major fatal zoonotic disease in Indonesia. This study was conducted to determine the recent dynamics of rabies virus (RABV) in various areas and animal species throughout Indonesia. A total of 27 brain samples collected from rabid animals of various species in Bali, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java, and Flores in 2008 to 2010 were investigated. The cDNA of the nucleoprotein gene from each sample was generated and amplified by one-step reverse transcription-PCR, after which the products were sequenced and analyzed. The symmetric substitution model of a Bayesian stochastic search
