Coeliac disease and gluten avoidance in New Zealand children.

OBJECTIVES: Although gluten avoidance is thought to be common among New Zealanders, the prevalence of gluten avoidance and of actual coeliac disease (CD) in children is uncertain. Our aims were: (1) to determine the prevalence of doctor-diagnosed CD and of gluten avoidance in New Zealand children; and (2) among children without CD, to identify independent predictors of gluten avoidance. DESIGN: The New Zealand Asthma and Allergy Cohort Study has detailed information on participants' demographic, pregnancy-related and neonatal factors. The authors surveyed parents regarding their child's histo

Collision avoidance behaviors of recently concussed female rugby players with an approaching person.

BACKGROUND: Successful collision avoidance requires individuals to use readily available perceptual information to make decisions and act within their action capabilities. Female varsity rugby players use time-to-collision information to get closer to an obstacle before deviating; however, following a sport-related concussion (SRC), individuals may not be able to use the same strategies due to poorer action boundary perception. The current study examined the effects of a SRC on collision avoidance with an approaching person. METHODS: Non-concussed female varsity rugby athletes (ATH, n = 10) a

COVID-19 and corporate tax avoidance: International evidence.

Governments across the globe initiated various tax reforms in the post- Global Financial Crisis period to rein in aggressive corporate tax avoidance for managing budget deficits. These developments created new realities in the international business environment by altering the costs and benefits of corporate tax management. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the effectiveness of tax reforms in controlling corporate tax avoidance at the global level. COVID-19 offers a litmus test for how corporates manage their taxes during the pandemic in light of past tax reforms. We use financial constr

The Association between Metacognitions and Worry: The Mediator Role of Experiential Avoidance Strategies.

Although experiential avoidance is emphasized as an underlying factor for persevering worry, limited empirical attempt exists to integrate this concept with cognitive models explaining pathological worry. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the mediator role of different experiential avoidance strategies in the relationship between metacognitions and worry-related symptoms. The study was conducted with a community sample consisting of 563 volunteer participants (405 females, 158 males) whose ages ranged between 18 and 40 (M = 25.56, SD = 4.72). Online data collection of self-repor

Dopamine in the ventral and tail of striatum supports global and local evaluation in reward-threat conflict.

Survival requires balancing reward seeking and threat avoidance, yet how distinct dopamine systems coordinate to support this remains unclear. Using a naturalistic foraging paradigm in which mice pursue water reward under threat from a monster object, we examined roles of dopamine projections to the ventral striatum (VS) and tail of the striatum (TS). Ablation of VS-projecting dopamine neurons impaired both distal reward pursuit and threat avoidance, with the impairment in threat avoidance paralleling effects of TS dopamine ablation. However, simultaneous recordings revealed different activity

The novel anticonvulsant loreclezole (R 72063) does not produce diazepam-like anterograde amnesia in a passive avoidance test in rats.

Rats were injected intraperitoneally with loreclezole (R 72063), diazepam, or scopolamine 60 min prior to acquisition of a passive avoidance task and tested 18 h later for retention of the learned (passive) behavior. The known impairment of performance produced by diazepam in this test is believed to be a model for the clinically observed diazepam-induced anterograde amnesia in humans. We report in this study that (1) consistent with the literature, pretreatment with diazepam (2.0-16.0 mg/kg i.p.) or scopolamine (3.0 mg/kg i.p.) produced impairment in passive avoidance performance of rats (ant

Does treatment status matter? An examination of daily approach and avoidance inclinations predicting drinking in individuals diagnosed with alcohol use disorder.

AIMS: Traditional craving models do not assess competing desires and account for craving as a function of attempts to change problematic drinking behaviors, thereby limiting the utility of the information obtained. The Ambivalence Model of Craving defines craving as the coactivation of both desires to consume (approach) and to avoid consuming alcohol (avoidance). The current study examined the daily associations between approach/avoidance, and drinking in those diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD), including how treatment status moderated such relationships. METHOD: Individuals diagnosed

Better safe than sorry: Avoidance of interoceptive threat following observational fear learning.

Learning through observation is often adaptive, allowing individuals to acquire important threat-related information without exposing themselves to danger. However, it can become maladaptive when it leads to excessive fear or avoidance in the absence of actual threat. This study examined whether observational learning of an interoceptive threat promotes avoidance behavior and how conditioned responding changes when avoidance is prevented. Forty healthy participants completed a three-phase observational fear conditioning paradigm. In the observational learning phase, participants watched a demo

Visuo-motor coordination and internal models for object interception.

Intercepting and avoiding collisions with moving objects are fundamental skills in daily life. Anticipatory behavior is required because of significant delays in transforming sensory information about target and body motion into a timed motor response. The ability to predict the kinematics and kinetics of interception or avoidance hundreds of milliseconds before the event may depend on several different sources of information and on different strategies of sensory-motor coordination. What are exactly the sources of spatio-temporal information and what are the control strategies remain controve

Corticosteroid receptor antagonists are amnestic for passive avoidance learning in day-old chicks.

Glucocorticoids can modulate behavioural processes and neural plasticity. They are released during learning situations and can trigger neural actions through binding to brain receptors. We hypothesized that a glucocorticoid action could play a critical role in the mechanisms involved in long-term memory formation. In order to test this hypothesis, chicks were trained on a passive avoidance learning task and given bilateral intracerebral injections of selective mineralocorticoid (RU-28318) or glucocorticoid (RU-38486) receptor antagonists. The results showed that both antagonists alter informat

Childhood emotional maltreatment, anxiety, attachment, and mindfulness: Associations with facial emotion recognition.

The current study investigated factors thought to contribute to facial emotion processing. Female university students (N = 126) completed self-report measures of childhood emotional maltreatment, anxiety symptoms, attachment anxiety and avoidance, and trait mindfulness before completing a facial emotion recognition task, where they viewed sequences of faces that incorporated progressively more emotional content until they were able to correctly identify the emotion. They completed the task under low and high cognitive load conditions to distinguish between relatively effortful versus automatic

Elucidating medial temporal and frontal lobe contributions to approach-avoidance conflict decision-making using functional MRI and the hierarchical drift diffusion model.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) has long been associated with arbitrating between approach and avoidance in the face of conflicting and uncertain motivational information, but recent work has also highlighted medial temporal lobe (MTL) involvement. It remains unclear, however, how the contributions of these regions differ in their resolution of conflict information and uncertainty. We designed an fMRI paradigm in which participants approached or avoided object pairs that differed by motivational conflict and outcome uncertainty (complete certainty vs. complete uncertainty). Behavioral data and dec

What patients do when they feel dizzy: behavioural signatures reveal diagnostic clues in common vestibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of vestibular disorders relies heavily on clinical history, yet how patients adapt their behaviour in response to dizziness remains relatively unexplored. We investigated whether adopted avoidance behaviours and coping strategies provide additional diagnostic information and insights into disease mechanisms. METHODS: Consecutive patients attending a specialist dizziness clinic underwent a structured interview before clinical assessment. Participants reported dizziness triggers, avoidance behaviours, and coping responses. Final diagnoses were established independently by

Understanding Discrepancies in a Person's Fear of Movement and Avoidance Behavior: A Guide for Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Clinicians Who Support People With Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

BACKGROUND: Generic self-report measures do not reflect the complexity of a person's pain-related behavior. Since variations in a person's fear of movement and avoidance behavior may arise from contextual and motivational factors, a person-centered evaluation is required-addressing the cognitions, emotions, motivation, and actual behavior of the person. CLINICAL QUESTION: Most musculoskeletal rehabilitation clinicians will recognize that different people with chronic pain have very different patterns of fear and avoidance behavior. However, an important remaining question for clinicians is "Ho
