Inhibin, a dimeric gonadal glycoprotein, inhibits the production and/or secretion of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The major species currently recognized are inhibin A (alphabeta A subunit) and inhibin B (alphabeta B subunit). In men, inhibin B seems to be the physiologically important form of inhibin. Serum and peritoneal fluid inhibin levels were measured by radioimmunoassay throughout the menstrual cycle in 14 women with endometriosis and in 16 controls. The inhibin B pubertal surge is a prominent signal of gonadal maturation in females as well as in males. In boys, it denotes the final functional maturation of Sertoli cells, which is accompanied by a progressive suppression of antimüllerian hormone production. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate maternal serum immunoreactive inhibin (ir-inhibin) concentrations in women with pre-eclampsia, and assess the correlation between serum ir-inhibin and HCG.
METHODS: The subjects comprised 28 pregnant women with suspected intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) during the third trimester. Bovine follicular fluid was used as a source for the isolation of gonadal inhibin, the activity of which was monitored by the dose dependent suppression of the FSH content of cultured pituitary cells. The procedures presented result in over 3000-fold purification of the starting material and the purified inhibin has an apparent molecular weight of 56000. The purified inhibin can be dissociated under reducing conditions into two subunits with molecular weights of 44000 and 14000 daltons.
