BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance seriously threatens the efficacy of vector control interventions in malaria endemic countries. In Afghanistan, the status of insecticide resistance is largely unknown while distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets has intensified in recent years. The main objective of this study was thus to measure the level of resistance to four classes of insecticides in provinces with medium to high risk of malaria transmission.
METHODS: Adult female mosquitoes were reared from larvae successively collected in the provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar, Badakhshan, Ghazni an…

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a highly invasive noctuid pest first reported in northern Australia during early 2020. To document current status of resistance in S. frugiperda in Australia, insecticide toxicity was tested in field populations collected during the first year of establishment, between March 2020 and March 2021. Dose-response was measured by larval bioassay in 11 populations of S. frugiperda and a susceptible laboratory strain of Helicoverpa armigera. Emamectin benzoate was the most efficacious insecticide (LC50 0.023μg/ml) followed by chlorantraniliprole (LC50 0.055μg/ml)

Resistance to pyrethroids (PY) and organophosphate (OP) insecticides is widespread among populations of Culex quinquefasciatus, the major vector of lymphatic filariasis (LF). The present study was designed to detect the L1014F kdr (knockdown resistant) mutation among Cx. quinquefasciatus populations in the filarial belt of Sri Lanka. Mosquitoes were reared from field-caught larvae from seven localities where LF is endemic. Susceptibility status of Cx. quinquefasciatus to adulticides, 0.05% deltamethrin, 0.75% permethrin, 5% malathion, and the larvicide temephos was determined using the standar

Field populations or strains of Propylaea japonica collected from four places in southern China (Guangzhou, Nanning, Guilin, and Yuxi) were tested for susceptibility to four insecticides (abamectin, imidacloprid, beta-cypermethrin, and chlorpyrifos) by the Petri-dish Potter tower method and compared with an insecticide-susceptible strain. Concentrations that proved lethal for 50% of the tested individuals (LC50) were estimated by probit analysis, and resistance factors (RF) were calculated at the LC50 level, which ranged from 1.6 to 10.1, depending on the insecticide. In addition, the Guangzho

Resistance to insecticides that impairs nervous transmission has been widely investigated in mosquito populations as insecticides are crucial to effective insect control. The development of insecticide resistance is also of special interest to evolutionary biologists since it represents the opportunity to observe the genetic consequences of a well-characterized alteration in the environment. Although the frequencies of resistance alleles in Culex pipiens populations against different groups of insecticides have been reported, no detailed information is available on the relative change in these…

Insecticide resistance in anopheline malaria vectors poses a major threat to malaria control and elimination efforts. We conducted spatial analyses using publicly available and published data to document and model the geospatial distribution of Anopheles spp. insecticide resistance in Tanzania at the national, regional, district, and subdistrict levels for the 2012-2021 period. An insecticide resistance map modeled for 2022 predicted that anopheline insecticide susceptibility remained above the 90% susceptibility threshold for all major insecticide classes, except for pyrethroids. We calculate…

BACKGROUND: Myanmar is one of the six countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) of Southeast Asia. Malaria vectors comprise many Anopheles species, which vary in abundance and importance in malaria transmission among different geographical locations in the GMS. Information about the species composition, abundance, and insecticide resistance status of vectorial systems in Myanmar is scarce, hindering our efforts to effectively control malaria vectors in this region.
METHODS: During October and November 2019, larvae and adult females of Anopheles mosquitoes were collected in three sentine…

Stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans Linnaeus, 1758) can have a considerable negative impact on animal well-being, health, and productivity. Since insecticides constitute the mainstay for their control, this study aimed at assessing the occurrence of insecticide resistance in S. calcitrans on dairy farms in Brandenburg, Germany. First, the susceptibility of stable flies from 40 dairy farms to a deltamethrin-impregnated fabric was evaluated using the FlyBox® field test method. Then, S. calcitrans strains from 10 farms were reared in the laboratory, and the offspring was tested against the adultici…

Key to contemporary management of diseases such as malaria, dengue, and filariasis is control of the insect vectors responsible for transmission. Insecticide-based interventions have contributed to declines in disease burdens in many areas, but this progress could be threatened by the emergence of insecticide resistance in vector populations. Insecticide resistance is likewise a major concern in agriculture, where insect pests can cause substantial yield losses. Here, we explore overlaps between understanding and managing insecticide resistance in agriculture and in public health. We have used…

Culex pipiens complex is the significant vector mosquito of West Nile virus. To take stock of the current situation of insecticide susceptibilities and design an ideal mosquito control strategy, we collected Culex pipiens pallens Coquillet, Culex pipiens form molestus Forskal, and Culex quinquefasciatus Say from fields in Japan and conducted bioassays for five larvicides (fenitrothion, temephos, etofenprox, diflubenzuron, and pyriproxyfen) by using a larval dipping method. Among five insecticides tested, obvious reduced susceptibilities were observed for etofenprox, which is the only pyrethroi

Treatment of head louse infection is primarily through topical insecticides. However, there is growing evidence of resistance. A representative population sample was tested using biochemical and molecular methods; it was shown that, in Wales, treatments containing pyrethroids are likely to be less effective in controlling head louse infection than those containing organophosphates.

The East Region of Cameroon has over 150 malaria cases per 1000 inhabitants per year. Factors contributing to this high malaria prevalence are not well understood. This study assessed the bionomics of vectors involved in malaria transmission, their susceptibility to insecticides, and the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets. Entomological studies were conducted twice yearly in Belabo and Ouami from 2021 to 2023 using both human landing catches and CDC light traps to collect adult mosquitoes. Anopheline species were separated using morphological identification keys and Anopheles gambiae (s.l.)

House flies, Musca domestica L., are important pests of dairy operations worldwide, with the ability to adapt wide range of environmental conditions. There are a number of insecticides used for their management, but development of resistance is a serious problem. Insecticide mixtures could enhance the toxicity of insecticides in resistant insect pests, thus resulting as a potential resistance management tool. The toxicity of bifenthrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, chlorpyrifos, profenofos, emamectin benzoate and fipronil were assessed separately, and in mixtures against house flies. A field-co

The exploration of new niches for microorganisms capable of degrading recalcitrant molecules is still required. We hypothesized the gut microbiota associated with insect-resistant lines carry pesticide degrading bacteria, and predicted they carry bacteria selected to degrade pesticides they were resistant to. We isolated and accessed the pesticide-degrading capacity of gut bacteria from the gut of fifth instars of Spodoptera frugiperda strains resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, chlorpyrifos ethyl, spinosad and lufenuron, using insecticide-selective media. The fight against diseases spread by mosquitoes and other insects has enormous environmental, economic and social consequences. Chemical insecticides remain the first line of defence but the control of diseases, especially malaria and dengue fever, is being increasingly undermined by insecticide resistance. Mosquitoes have a large repertoire of P450s (over 100 genes). By pinpointing the key enzymes associated with insecticide resistance we can begin to develop new tools to aid the implementation of control interventions and reduce their environmental impact on Earth. Recent technological advan…

Behavioural resistance is one of the major public health challenges facing planned vector control strategies involving insecticides. Understanding the behaviour of mosquitoes holistically when exposed to insecticides could be key to adding up to the fight against resistance. This study evaluated the behavioural responses and oviposition fitness of male and female Anopheles coluzzii exposed to selected pyrethroids, including lambda-cyhalothrin (0.05%), permethrin (0.75%), and DDT (4%). Male and female mosquitoes, aged three to five days, were exposed in eight replicates to selected insecticides
