Scorpion stings cause more morbidity in Mexico than any other country, leading to about 100 deaths annually. In 1999, the State of Morelos reported nine deaths among 30663 cases of scorpion sting. To replace lindane used for scorpion control, field trials of pyrethroid pesticides were undertaken in Morelos during 1998-2000 at the village of Chalcatzingo (population initially with 2760 inhabitants and 530 houses). Acute neurotoxic effects during the cholinergic phase of organophosphorus insecticide poisoning and delayed neurotoxic effects appearing two to three weeks later are well recognized. We observed 10 patients who had paralysis of proximal limb muscles, neck flexors, motor cranial nerves, and respiratory muscles 24 to 96 hours after poisoning, after a well-defined cholinergic phase. Eight 14C-labeled insecticides representing diverse chemical classes were intubated into fasted mice whose stomachs were ligated at the pylorus. Absorption through the stomach was measured at 3 time intervals over a 60-min period and compared to similar absorption studies in the entire gastrointestinal tract. The percent of stomach absorption (as contrasted to total gastrointestinal absorption) varied from 29% (carbaryl) to 10% (nicotine). Distribution following stomach absorption was found to be similar to that in the gastrointestinal tract.

OBJECTIVE: To study eleven organophosphorus insecticides residuals in four kinds of Chinese crude drugs.
METHOD: The organophosphorus insecticides were extracted with dichloromethane and cleaned-up with a mixture of Celite 545-activated carbon. The extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography equipped with a flame photometric detector (FPD).

The article deals with the results obtained in the study of the natural sensitivity of the nature populations of Ixodes ticks to 4 insecticides.
