Interferon-alpha and interferon-gamma production by idiopathic isolated optic neuritis (ON) patients was studied. The production capacity was compared with that in two control groups: patients with iritis and healthy control subjects. A sensitive and reliable interferon bioassay was applied for interferon level measurements. Statistically significant differences were not found between patients and control groups in either interferon-alpha production or interferon-gamma production.

We studied ADA and gamma interferon (gamma-IFN) levels in pleural fluid of 45 cases presenting with pleural effusion to the Ankara University School of Medicine Chest Diseases Hospital between September 2001 and September 2002. Fifteen patients had TB pleurisy, 20 patients had malignant pleurisy and 10 patients had transudative pleural effusion. The cut-off value for pleural fluid gamma-IFN levels were 12 pg/mL. The clinical and immunological evolution of lesions in cutaneous leishmaniasis was assessed after treatment with human recombinant gamma interferon (rIFN-gamma). 3 weeks after rIFN-gamma treatment of lesions due to Leishmania braziliensis guyanensis, 12/13 had become smaller compared with 6/13 control lesions; only 4 treated lesions were free of parasites. 9 of 13 L tropica lesions treated with rIFN-gamma resolved completely within 4-8 weeks of treatment. One of the most consistent defects in the neonate's host defense system is in the ability of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) to move in a unidirectional fashion towards a chemotactic stimulus.
