Selective mass treatment with ivermectin to control intestinal helminthiases and parasitic skin diseases in a severely affected population.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the short-term and long-term impact of selective mass treatment with ivermectin on the prevalence of intestinal helminthiases and parasitic skin diseases in an economically depressed community in north-east Brazil. METHODS: An intervention was carried out in a traditional fishing village in north-east Brazil where the population of 605 is heavily affected by ectoparasites and enteroparasites. The prevalence of intestinal helminths was determined by serial stool examination and the prevalence of parasitic skin diseases by clinical inspection. A total of 525 people out of a

Comparison between Two Decades of Prevalence of Intestinal Parasitic Diseases and Risk Factors in a Brazilian Urban Centre.

Objectives. This study's objective was to compare the prevalence of intestinal parasites and associated risk factors in children in urban communities, in the Brazilian Northeast, between two decades. Methods. This quantitative transversal study consisted of a comparative analysis of two different samples: the first viewing the years 1992-1996 and the other through a coproepidemiological data survey undertaken in 2010-2011. Results. It was evidenced that there was a reduction of intestinal parasites and that there were improvements in the socioenvironmental conditions between the two decades ev

Immune-mediated Bowel Disease: Role of Intestinal Parasites and Gut Microbiome.

Immune-mediated bowel diseases (IMBD), notably ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, impose a substantial global health burden due to their intricate etiology and escalating prevalence. The nexus between intestinal parasites and the gut microbiome in IMBD is a dynamic and complex field of study. Several studies have evidenced the capacity of intestinal parasites to modulate the gut microbiome, inducing alterations in microbial diversity, abundance, and metabolic activity. These changes are crucial in influencing the immune response and contributing to the development of IMBDs. Simultaneously

A synoptic inventory of needs for research on women and tropical parasitic diseases. I. Application to urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis.

The determinants of major parasitic infections in women have never been studied systematically. Much work remains to be done before vital gaps in our knowledge will be filled. The protocol presented here categorizes the determinants of parasitic diseases, and functions as an inventory for research needs and priorities. In this paper, the synoptic inventory is tested by matching it against the scientific knowledge of schistosomiasis that is at hand. Available data and existing lacunae are discussed. We conclude that the environmental, economic, socio-cultural, nutritional, genetic, biological a

Host-Parasite Interactions Promote Disease Tolerance to Intestinal Helminth Infection.

Parasitic helminths are among the most pervasive pathogens of the animal kingdom. To complete their life cycle, these intestinal worms migrate through host tissues causing significant damage in their wake. As a result, infection can lead to malnutrition, anemia and increased susceptibility to co-infection. Despite repeated deworming treatment, individuals living in endemic regions remain highly susceptible to re-infection by helminths, but rarely succumb to excessive tissue damage. The chronicity of infection and inability to resist numerous species of parasitic helminths that have co-evolved

Disease severity in patients with visceral leishmaniasis is not altered by co-infection with intestinal parasites.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected tropical disease that affects the poorest communities and can cause substantial morbidity and mortality. Visceral leishmaniasis is characterized by the presence of Leishmania parasites in the spleen, liver and bone marrow, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia, prolonged fever, systemic inflammation and low body mass index (BMI). The factors impacting on the severity of VL are poorly characterized. Here we performed a cross-sectional study to assess whether co-infection of VL patients with intestinal parasites influences disease severity, assessed with cli

Binge eating disorder onset by unusual parasitic intestinal disease: a case-report.

We report a case of binge eating disorder (BED) in a 19-year-old Spanish woman, whose onset followed a nowadays uncommon parasitic intestinal disease (Taenia solium by cysticercosis). The patient exhibited bizarre and frequent hyperphagia episodes and extreme loss of weight, common symptoms of this condition. The patient continued to have frequent binge episodes and inappropriate eating patterns, gaining weight consequently over a normal range, despite successful treatment of the condition. No purging behavior was detected. A classical conditioning behavioral model, was useful for the understa

[Perforations of the small intestine and intestinal parasitic diseases. Apropos of a case of peritonitis caused by the perforation of the small intestine combined with Taenia saginata infection].

A case is reported of peritonitis from perforation of the small intestine found on operation to be due to Taenia saginata. A review of the relevant literature of the last 20 years failed to find many similar cases, parasites, particularly Taenia being an exceptional direct cause of perforation. In the case reported, however, a direct cause/effect relation is highly probable.

New Perspectives in Equine Intestinal Parasitic Disease: Insights in Monitoring Helminth Infections.

Regular anthelmintic treatment has contributed to anthelmintic resistance in horse helminths. This mass anthelmintic treatment was originally developed owing to a lack of larvicidal drugs against Strongylus vulgaris. The high prevalence of anthelmintic resistance and shortening of strongyle egg reappearance period after avermectins/moxidectins requires epidemiologically appropriate and sustainable measures. Selective anthelmintic treatment is a much-needed deworming approach: More than 50% of adult horses manifest no strongyle egg excretion. In this article, selective anthelmintic treatment pr

[Prevalence of schistosomiasis mansoni and parasitic intestinal diseases among students of the rural area of the Municipality of Jaboticatubas, MG, 1992-1993].

Students from a Rural Boarding house of UFMG School of Medicine performed a survey of prevalence of schistosomiasis mansoni and other intestinal parasites in 20 rural schools in Jaboticatubas, MG. An evaluation of house and sanitation conditions was made and stool parasitological examinations were realised in all school children. It was noticed that 15.43% of the children presented S. mansoni's ova in stool--that was the most prevalent parasite. From the examinations we verify 13.76% positive cases for G. lamblia; 12.89% for S. stercoralis; 11.13% for A. lumbricoides; 9.96% for hookworms; 9.57

[Epidemiology of certain endemic parasitic diseases in the town of Guadalupe (Republic of Sao Tome and Principe) I. Schistosomiasis intercalatum and intestinal worms].

Schistosomiasis intercalatum in known to exist in Saõ Tomé since 1988, (Corachan et al.). It is transmitted by Bulinus forskalii, (Brown et al., 1989). Stool, blood and urine specimens have been collected from 380 inhabitants of all age groups living in the small town of Guadalupe close to the Agua Traź river and Agua Polino. The prevalence of schistosomiasis by detection of S. intercalatum eggs in a 10 mg stool thick smear (Kato technique) is 25.5%. An excreted Schistosoma polysaccharide antigen, detected by means of a monoclonal antibody (Ripert et al., 1992), is found in 49.1% of the urine

Sickle Cell Disease and Gut Health: The Influence of Intestinal Parasites and the Microbiome on Angolan Children.

Parasitic infections are a common problem in developing countries and can intensify morbidity in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), increasing the severity of anemia and the need for transfusions. It has been demonstrated that both helminths and protozoa can affect gut microbiome composition. On the other hand, the presence of specific bacterial communities can also influence parasite establishment. Considering this, our aim was to associate the presence of intestinal parasites with the results of hematological analyses and microbiome composition evaluations in a population of Angolan ch
