Iris melanoma is a malignant melanocytic tumor, making up 1.2%-6.6% of uveal malignant melanomas. The growth of choroidal melanoma during pregnancy is described and a hormonal influence is suggested. Clinical identification of tapioca melanoma of the iris is important because its medical treatment may differ from that of other malignant iris melanomas. The characteristic iris nodules must be differentiated from granulomatous uveitis, metastases, and Lisch nodules (neurofibromatosis). We will discuss the anterior segment findings, secondary glaucoma, and fluorescein iris angiographic and histopathologic data from two patients, one with a single nodular type and one with a seeding type of tapioca melanoma of the iris.

This is the first report in the American literature elaborating on the clinical and angiographic characteristics of an iris arteriovenous malformation. Iris vascular abnormalities that do not leak fluorescein have previously been described only in association with underlying disorders. Iris arteriovenous malformations must be differentiated from neovascularization and other diseases affecting iris vasculature in which treatment is necessary in order to prevent further sequelae.

PURPOSE: Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. Iris melanoma comprises 4% to 10% of all UMs and has a lower mortality rate. The genetic changes in iris melanoma are not as well characterized as ciliary body or choroidal melanoma. The aim of this study was to gain more insight into the genetic background of iris melanoma and iris nevi.

We describe the case of a 78-year-old highly myopic woman who had bilateral phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. During surgery, the anterior chamber was extremely deep and the pupil was excessively dilated, consistent with lens-iris diaphragm retropulsion syndrome (LIDRS). Subsequent biomicroscopy revealed multifocal iris sphincter ruptures, a new finding associated with LIDRS.

A 23-year-old woman with the diagnosis of anterior uveitis in the left eye was referred to our clinic. Circumferential midzonal iris epithelial cysts were observed in the right eye and corneal endothelial pigment precipitates and diffuse pigment discharge in the anterior chamber of the left eye. A 48-year-old man presented with a vascular anomaly of the iris in the left eye. Slit-lamp microscopy revealed dilated and tortuous vessels of the iris between 12 and 4 o'clock. Fluorescein angiography confirmed a diagnosis of arteriovenous (AV) malformation of the iris. The vessel originated at the iris base, passed to the pupillary margin and returned to the base. Such AV-malformations of the iris are very rare, benign vascular anomalies that have to be distinguished from other, potentially malignant pathologies of the iris (e. g. tortuous vessels in iris melanoma).

METHOD: Formalin fixed and paraffin embedded iris tissue excised during cataract surgery from 20 leprosy patients were sectioned and studied with haematoxylin and eosin stain and modified Fite Faraco's stain for acid fast bacilli (AFB).
