BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the commonest clinical scenarios especially in children, women of childbearing age, and elders. The crux of this review was revisiting iron homeostasis, mechanism of iron absorption, causes, laboratory diagnosis, and management of IDA.
METHODS: This narrative review is compiled after a relevant literature search from electronic databases including, but not limited to, Google, Google Scholar, PMC, PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus. The key words used for searching relevant literature include iron, iron deficiency, iron deficiency anemia, iron

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is caused by iron deficiency, a common yet underrecognized clinical entity. Populations at greatest risk include children, menstruating and pregnant persons, and people of low socioeconomic status. Timely diagnosis and management of iron deficiency are key to preventing IDA and require thorough assessment of the underlying cause and appropriate iron repletion through either oral or parenteral therapy. Blood transfusion does not provide adequate elemental iron but is sometimes indicated along with iron therapy in patients with cardiovascular compromise, active bleed

Iron, although present in trace amounts, is a crucial micronutrient in the human body. It plays a significant role in essential bodily functions such as oxygen transport and energy metabolism. For athletes, particularly those engaged in endurance activities with high oxygen demands, iron is an indispensable nutrient. Despite its importance, a notable number of athletes experience iron deficiency. Research has suggested a connection between exercise performance and iron regulation, leading to increased focus on how these two factors interact. The aim of this study was to investigate how various

Numerous studies have suggested a link between iron-deficiency anemia(IDA) and Helicobacter pylori infection. Previously, we found that strains isolated from IDA patients showed higher levels of Fe ion uptake and Fe-iron-dependent rapid proliferation than those of strains derived from patients without IDA. Recently we examined the nucleotide sequences of nap A, fur, and feo B of H. pylori strains from 24 IDA patients and those from 25 non-IDA patients. Frequency of neutrophil-activating protein A(Nap A), which encoded by nap A, with threonine at amino acid residue No. 70 (Thr70-type Nap A) was

The most severe consequence of iron depletion is iron deficiency anemia (IDA), and it is still considered the most common nutrition deficiency worldwide. Although the etiology of IDA is multifaceted, it generally results when the iron demands by the body are not met by iron absorption, regardless of the reason. Individuals with IDA have inadequate intake, impaired absorption or transport, physiologic losses associated with chronological or reproductive age, or chronic blood loss secondary to disease. In adults, IDA can result in a wide variety of adverse outcomes including diminished work or e

In the past seven years numerous genes that influence iron homeostasis have been discovered. Dr. Beutler provides a brief overview of these genes, genes that encode HFE, DMT-1, ferroportin, transferrin receptor 2, hephaestin, and hepcidin to lay the groundwork for a discussion of the various clinical forms of iron storage disease and how they differ from one another. In Section I, Dr. Beutler also discusses the types of hemochromatosis that exist as acquired and as hereditary forms. Acquired hemochromatosis occurs in patients with marrow failure, particularly when there is active ineffective e

In Europe, iron deficiency is considered to be one of the main nutritional deficiency disorders affecting large fractions of the population, particularly such physiological groups as children, menstruating women and pregnant women. Some factors such as type of contraception in women, blood donation or minor pathological blood loss (haemorrhoids, gynaecological bleeding...) considerably increase the difficulty of covering iron needs. Moreover, women, especially adolescents consuming low-energy diets, vegetarians and vegans are at high risk of iron deficiency. Although there is no evidence that

This chapter discusses different methods to prevent iron deficiency--to reduce iron losses (e.g. reducing menstrual iron losses by using a contraceptive pill or combating of hookworm infestation) or to increase iron absorption. Iron absorption can be increased (1) by modifying the composition of meals--increasing the content of dietary factors enhancing iron absorption (e.g. meat and ascorbic acid) or reducing the content of factors inhibiting iron absorption such as phytate and iron-binding phenolic compounds, (2) by increasing the iron content of the diet by fortification with iron, or by (3

Iron plays an important role in mammalian physiological processes. It is a critical component for the function of many proteins, including enzymes that require heme and iron-sulfur clusters. However, excess iron is also detrimental because of its ability to catalyze the formation of reactive oxygen species. As a result, cellular and systemic iron levels are tightly regulated to prevent oxidative damage. Iron deficiency can lead to a number of pathological conditions, the most prominent being anemia. Iron deficiency should be corrected to improve adult patients' symptoms and to facilitate norma
