OBJECTIVES: We retrospectively evaluated the patients with jaw cysts treated at our center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 25 patients (14 males, 11 females; mean age 33+/-19 years; range 7 to 69 years) who underwent surgery for odontogenic or nonodontogenic jaw cysts.
RESULTS: The most common presentation was a swelling in the jaw with or without dental problems. Involvement was in the mandible in 18 patients, and in the maxilla in seven patients. A 23-year-old white man was referred to this Odontostomatologic Service for evaluation of palatal swelling lesion. Oral inspection showed a poor oral conditions and multiple caries. A panoramic radiograph revealed 3 mandibular and 4 maxillary radiolucent lesions. Lectin-binding patterns were examined in epithelial walls of 65 jaw cysts (30 post-operative maxillary cysts: POMCs, 20 radicular and 15 follicular cysts), and characteristic lectin staining for each kind of jaw cysts is presented. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the clinicopathological and behavioral spectrum of the so-called calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC).
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 21 cases previously diagnosed as COC was undertaken to evaluate their clinical, radiographic, pathological and behavioral features.
RESULTS: The lesions of this series were divided into three groups, including simple cysts, benign and malignant tumors. The cyst group was composed of 16 cases (9 men, 7 women). The number and variety of cysts that occur in the jaws are greater than those in any other part of the body. Consequently, dental practitioners must keep up with advances in this field, including the definition of new entities, such as the glandular odontogenic cyst; the deletion of the old incorrect concept of maxillofacial fissural cysts, including the globulo-maxillary cyst; and the advances in the molecular biology of established cysts, such as the dentigerous cyst and the odontogenic keratocyst.

The authors presents two cases of basocellular nevomatosis with multiple maxillary cysts. He thought it important to point out the presence of a cyst in the left styloid apophysis, as up to now, epidermoid cysts have never been observed in other facial bones apart from the maxillae in BCN. In conclusion, the author presents three casses, which although showing multiple cysts or pseudocysts of the maxillae, do not belong to the BCN syndrome.
