A review of the literature on keloids, a complex and poorly understood subject, is presented. Keloid is a disease principally of the human dermis, and occasionally the cornea, appearing as thick scar tissue invading normal skin or cornea and produced by the deposition of excessive amounts of collagen over prolonged periods. The African negro is particularly susceptible. Available methods of treatment include surgical excision, external superficial radiotherapy, interstitial irradiation, intralesional steroid injections, cryotherapy, ultrasound, systemic chemotherapy, zinc tape strapping, press…

Two patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) developed keloidal-like nodules within areas of thickened skin. This extremely unusual event is most likely a keloidal response to the early inflammatory component of scleroderma in patients who are either genetically at risk for keloid formation or in areas of the skin that have a high predilection for keloid formation such as the chest.

There is abundant evidence in the literature that keloids and hypertrophic scars are different stages of the same process. The evidence, clinical and histogenetic, also shows that the hypertrophic scar is the earlier of the two stages. It therefore follows that all keloids do evolve through the hypertrophic scar phase. These conclusions have largely eased the confusion of nomenclature and made a clinicopathologic correlation of the available knowledge on keloid possible.

Several studies have reported on certain aspects of the characteristics of different sites within a keloid lesion, but detailed studies on the keloid dermis at different depths within a keloid lesion are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the histology of the keloid dermis at different depths. This study included 19 keloid tissue samples that were collected from 19 patients and 19 normal skin samples, which were harvested from subjects without keloids or hypertrophic scar. Samples were studied by light microscopy using routine hematoxylin and eosin histochemical staining, and imm…

Keloids are prevalent pathological scars, often leading to cosmetic deformities and hindering joint mobility. They cause discomfort, including burning and itching, while gradually expanding and potentially posing a risk of cancer.Developing effective drugs and treatments for keloids has been a persistent challenge in the medical field. Natural products are an important source of innovative drugs and a breakthrough for many knotty disease.Herein, keywords of "natural, plant, compound, extract" were combined with "keloid" and searched in PubMed and Google Scholar, respectively. A total of 32 natu…

Keloids are disfiguring, hypertrophic scars with yet poorly understood pathomechanisms, which could lead to severe functional impairments. Here we analyzed the characteristics of keloidal cells by single cell sequencing and discovered the presence of an abundant population of Schwann cells that persisted in the hypertrophic scar tissue after wound healing. In contrast to normal skin, keloidal Schwann cells show a unique, pro-fibrotic phenotype. Our data support the hypothesis that keloidal Schwann cells contribute to the formation of the extracellular matrix and are able to affect M2 polarizat…

Keloid is a benign fibroblastic tumor which is most often secondary to a scar, but it can occur spontaneously in a subject with black skin. We report the case of a 19-year old patient, electrician, presenting with giant right retroauricular mass evolving over two years. For some time, the patient has experienced a feeling of heaviness on the pavilion of the right ear. The lesion had manifested as a hard, pruritic, non-painful patch gradually increasing in size. The patient had received several topical and antiseptics treatments without any effect. He had a history of traumatic injury in the ri…

Earlobe keloids are commonly encountered in this era where ear piercing is routine in various traditions. Various medical and surgical methods have been tried for its management. Surgically, fillet flap surgery has better acceptability worldwide. Various difficulties are faced during keloid excision, and we hereby describe few innovative modifications (use of needle, hydrodissection, pressure dressing, bolster button) using cost-effective and simple materials (needles, dynaplast, buttons) to ease the excision of keloids. These have easy adaptability and also reduce the recurrence rate of earlo…

Pemphigus vulgaris is an immunobullous disease characterized by intraepidermal blister formation. These blisters eventually rupture, leaving erosions that are slow to heal, often leaving hyperpigmented patches, but no scars. We describe a case of a 67- year-old man with pemphigus vulgaris who suffered severe keloidal scarring after the pemphigus lesions became infected. His keloids were treated with intralesional corticosteroids with some improvement. Pemphigus vulgaris, a process confined to the epidermis, may lead to scarring in predisposed individuals, particularly if infection occurs.

We are reporting a 34-year-old Arabic white female patient who presented with a white mass covering her left cornea following multiple ocular surgeries and healed corneal ulcer. The lesion obscured further view of the iris, pupil and lens. The patient underwent penetrating keratoplasty and the histopathologic study of the left corneal button showed epithelial hyperplasia, absent Bowman's layer and subepithelial fibrovascular proliferation. The histopathologic appearance was suggestive of a corneal keloid which was supported by further ultrastructural study. The corneal graft remained clear 6 m…

OBJECTIVES: To analyse how the potential exposure to air pollutants can influence the key components at the time of diagnosis of Sjögren's phenotype (epidemiological profile, sicca symptoms, and systemic disease).
METHODS: For the present study, the following variables were selected for harmonization and refinement: age, sex, country, fulfilment of 2002/2016 criteria items, dry eyes, dry mouth, and overall ESSDAI score. Air pollution indexes per country were defined according to the OECD (1990-2021), including emission data of nitrogen and sulphur oxides (NO/SO), particulate matter (PM2.5 and

INTRODUCTION: Keloids are the result of abnormal tissue scarring that occur after skin injuries leading to pain, psychological distress, and impaired quality of life. Despite the high recurrence rate after surgical treatment, excision is often inevitable for symptom control.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old female presented with a huge keloid on the pubic area accompanied by severe pain, pruritus, and infectious discharge. She also had multiple keloids on her chest and shoulders, indicating a strong predisposition to keloid formation.
INTERVENTIONS: While high potential for recurrence was ant…

Keloids are the result of aberrant tissue scarring typically occurring in injured skin, and are caused by the overgrowth of granulation tissue or collagen type III during the healing process. There is a genetic component, thus a predisposition can be genetically transmitted. Keloids are difficult to treat because of their postexcisional recurrence, and they have an impact on patient quality of life due to psychological distress caused by cosmetic concerns and functional disability. Treatment ranges from classic corticosteroid therapy to multimodal approaches such as injections, cryotherapy, la…

Auricularis keloids are the keloids locating on the earlobe and helix which often caused by ear piercing, burn wound and skin injury. Because of its high recurrence, the treatment of auricularis keloids is troublesome to ENT doctors. In the past, clinicians harvested some achievements by combining surgical therapy, drug therapy and physical therapy. Keloid therapies were reviewed in this article.

BACKGROUND: The earlobe is a location with a high risk of keloid scar formation. Keloid scars pose a surgical challenge from recidivation. The objective of this study was to investigate a new surgical approach for the treatment of auricular keloids.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In the past 4 years, 11 earlobe keloids of 9 patients have been excised by fistulectomy (perforation operation). All of the patients were followed up for at least 12 months without recurrence.
CONCLUSIONS: As a new surgical approach, a perforation operation together with fistulectomy is suitable for lobular keloids.
