This paper describes a cross-sectional study with subjects and raters blind to HIV status to assess psychiatric morbidity associated with HIV in a sample of working adults in Western Kenya. Subjects were recruited from an occupational health clinic for statutory annual health checks of workers in the food industry. Psychiatric interviews and neuropsychological tests were conducted. Of 230 subjects, 34% were HIV positive. Women had a higher rate than men, and those who worked as bargirls or were divorced, widowed or separated were particularly at risk. Gambian sleeping sickness entered what is now Kenya from Uganda in about 1901 and quickly spread along the Kenyan shores and islands of Lake Victoria, reaching Tanzania in 1902. By 1910 the disease had spread 25 miles inland along the Kuja and Migori rivers and their tributaries. Sleeping sickness waxed and waned in these areas despite attempts to control tsetse fly populations by various methods. It was not until 1950, when the use of insecticides (DDT) applied by backpack sprayer proved successful against Glossina fuscipes at Kibigori, that eradication of G. fuscipes and Gambian sleeping sic…

In a Nairobi hospital where ocular prophylaxis against ophthalmia neonatorum has been discontinued, 1,019 women were screened for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis during labour and 7 and 28 days postpartum. The prevalence of gonococcal infection was 7% and that of chlamydial was 29%. 52.4% of gonococcal isolates produced penicillinase. The incidence of ophthalmia neonatorum was 23.2 per 100 live births, and incidences of gonococcal and chlamydial ophthalmia were 3.6 and 8.1 per 100 live births, respectively. Of 181 cases of neonatal conjunctivitis, 31% were caused by C trachomat

The burden of fungal infections has been on the rise globally and remains a significant public health concern in Kenya. We estimated the incidence and prevalence of fungal infections using all mycology publications in Kenya up to January 2023, and from neighbouring countries where data lacked. We used deterministic modelling using populations at risk to calculate the disease burden. The total burden of serious fungal infections is estimated to affect 6,328,294 persons which translates to 11.57% of the Kenyan population. Those suffering from chronic infections such as chronic pulmonary aspergil…
