The effect of intermittent local heat and cold on labor pain and child birth outcome.

BACKGROUND: Labor pain is one of the severest pains that cause many women request cesarean section for fear of pain. Thus, controlling labor pain is a major concern of maternity care. Nowadays, interest in non-pharmacological pain relief methods has been increased because of their lower side effects. The effects of discrete heat and cold on decreasing labor pain have been reported but there was no evaluation of the effects of simultaneous heat and cold. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intermittent heat and cold on pain severity and childbirth outcomes. MATERIALS AND MET

Parturients' perspectives on labor pain and epidural analgesia: A protocol for an explorative qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is a significant life event often accompanied by intense pain. Although pain perception is highly subjective and influenced by multiple factors, its management is frequently focused solely on pain intensity. Epidural analgesia (EA) is the most effective form of labor pain relief; however, there is limited qualitative research on which aspects of pain relief parturients perceive as successful with EA. Understanding parturients' perspectives on successful pain relief with EA can help improve patient-centered care and enhance labor pain management strategies. AIM: This qua

Insight into the abnormal cardiotocographic patterns following neuraxial analgesia for pain management in labor.

BACKGROUND: Neuraxial analgesia (NA) is widely used for pain management in labor but may be associated with abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, including prolonged decelerations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate decelerations and fetal bradycardia following neuraxial analgesia (NA; epidural, combined spinal-epidural, or spinal) in labor, in terms of frequency, associated factors, and outcomes. The primary objective was to determine whether maternal hypotension (SBP<100 mmHg or DBP<60 mmHg), uterine hyperstimulation (ie, exaggerated response to uterine stimulants presenting as a prolonged contraction

Virtual Reality as a Method to Cope With Labor Pain: What Do Women Want?

This study aimed to determine what childbearing women want when using virtual reality as an intrapartum pain management method. Researchers performed a qualitative exploratory study using content analysis. Two focus groups were organized including pregnant women anticipating a vaginal birth and women who recently had given birth, no longer than 6 months ago. The focus groups included a 30-minute virtual reality demo. In total, 10 women participated. Five themes emerged: (1) "try, test and explore": the need to receive information and to get acquainted with virtual reality during the antenatal

Effect of audio-visual therapy on pain and anxiety in labor: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Birth pain affects women at a physical and psychological level. Pain is subjective, and perception will vary among individuals depending on their health status, pain tolerance, and psychological state. Labor pain can drastically affect the birth process and delivery outcomes if not managed well, ranging from poor maternal satisfaction and impaired maternal-newborn bonding to prolonged labor and fetal distress. Since pharmacological pain relief methods harm the fetus, non-pharmacological pain relief methods are gaining popularity among laboring women and healthcare professionals. O

Partner presence in labor: does it influence maternal anxiety and childbirth experience beyond pain?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between partner presence during labor and maternal state anxiety, birth satisfaction, and pain perception in women undergoing spontaneous labor. METHODS: This prospective comparative observational study included women with singleton term pregnancies, spontaneous active labor, and vaginal delivery. Women with labor induction, epidural analgesia, additional obstetric pathology, systemic disease, or known psychiatric illness were excluded. Maternal anxiety was assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form TX-1 (STAI TX-1) during active labor, pain i

Efficacy and Emerging Role of Erector Spinae Plane Block for Pain Management during Labor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The erector spinae plane block (ESPB) has emerged as a novel regional anesthesia technique for managing pain during labor, providing an effective alternative to traditional methods. The present investigation evaluates efficacy and safety as well as maternal satisfaction in labor pain management. RECENT FINDINGS: A comprehensive analysis of patients receiving ESPB was conducted, comparing outcomes to those receiving standard analgesia, such as epidural anesthesia. Results show that the ESPB provided significant pain relief during labor, with comparable or superior efficacy t

Perceived stress during labor and its association with depressive symptomatology, anxiety, and pain catastrophizing.

Perceived stress is a dimension of the maternal stress response, however little data is available on perceived stress levels and its associated psychological risk factors during labor. In this secondary data analysis from a prospective study evaluating epidural regimens, we investigated the potential associations between depressive symptomatology, anxiety, and pain catastrophizing with perceived stress during labor. Healthy nulliparous adult women with term singleton pregnancies requesting for epidural analgesia in early labor were included. Assessments were administered after epidural analges

Persistent abdominal pain over uterine scar during labor as a predictor of delivery complications.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the significance of persistent lower abdominal pain in women with previous cesarean delivery. METHODS: Various maternal outcomes were compared between women who underwent repeated cesareans owing to persistent lower abdominal pain (study group) and women who underwent repeated cesareans without persistent abdominal pain (control group). RESULTS: The incidence of uterine rupture was significantly higher in the study group than in the control group (8/81 [9.9%] vs 0/119 [0.0%]; P<0.001). While all women with persistent lower abdominal pain and uterine rupture had an addi

Effectiveness of Warm Compression at the Lumbosacral Region on Labor Pain Intensity During the First Stage of Labor Among Parturient Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Labor pain is a fundamental, complex, and subjective experience during childbirth, characterized by severe discomfort that can be difficult for many women to tolerate. There are many non-pharmacological therapies available for the relief of labor pain, such as aromatherapy, music therapy, acupressure, yoga, breathing exercises, etc. The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of warm compression at the lumbosacral region on the intensity of labor pain during the first stage of labor. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the labor room of a ter

Association between labor and delivery pain and postpartum pain with symptoms and clinical diagnosis of postpartum depression in patients with overweight and obesity.

PURPOSE: Childbirth pain has been associated with the risk for postpartum depression. However, existing studies have been limited by the use of depression screening tools as outcomes, and none to date have used a structured clinical interview for DSM-V (SCID), which is considered the gold standard for psychiatric diagnoses. This study aimed to quantify the relationships between labor and postpartum pain and postpartum depression diagnosis detected by SCID, as well as depression symptoms detected by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD) screening tool, among a high-risk

Effect of availability of a parturient-elective regional labor pain relief service on the mode of delivery.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Regional analgesia for labor pain relief is effective and widely used. This study evaluated the controversial association between mode of operative delivery and patient-elective labor regional analgesia. METHODS: We retrospectively compared the rates of instrumental vaginal and cesarean deliveries in parturients before the introduction, in the first 15 months after, and in the subsequent 36 months after the implementation of an elective labor regional analgesia service. A total of 9779 low-risk singleton cephalic pregnancies above 36 weeks of gestation were included. The m
