Intralabyrinthine schwannomas mimic cochleovestibular disease: symptoms from tumor mass effect in the labyrinth.

OBJECTIVE: To describe symptoms from intralabyrinthine schwannomas specific from more common vestibular schwannomas of the internal auditory canal or cerebellopontine angle resulting from mass effect from the tumor within the labyrinth. PATIENTS: Eight patients diagnosed as having intralabyrinthine schwannomas from 2000 to 2014 were examined retrospectively from two tertiary neurotologic centers. INTERVENTIONS: Diagnosis of intralabyrinthine schwannoma was made with gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scans. Heavily T2-weighted sequences were used to verify mass within the fluid-f

Membranous labyrinth volumes in normal ears and Ménière disease: a three-dimensional reconstruction study.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the normal volume ranges of cochlear duct, saccule, and utricle, and to assess endolymphatic hydrops in Ménière disease. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective temporal bone study. METHODS: Three-dimensional (3-D) images of membranous labyrinth were reconstructed from 31 normal temporal bones, six temporal bones from three patients with bilateral Ménière disease, and 16 temporal bones from eight patients with unilateral Ménière disease. Volumes of each part of membranous labyrinth were measured in each temporal bone group after 3-D reconstruction.

Intratympanic injection of dexamethasone for management of labyrinthitis associated with COVID-19 disease resistant cases.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of mixed oral prednisolone and intratympanic dexamethasone (ITID) injection in labyrinthitis, due to COVID 19. METHODS: Seventy-five post-COVID-19 labyrinthitis patients were included. Those patients were treated with systemic oral prednisolone for two weeks and ITID. Patients who refuse ITID were ordered to continue oral prednisolone treatment. Assessment of outcome and audiometry for hearing evaluation was done 1, 2 and 4 weeks as well as 3 months post-treatment. RESULTS: Patients in oral steroid only group were 26 patients, while patients in oral steroi

3D-reconstructions of Bast's Valve and Membranous Labyrinth: Insights for Vestibular Implantation and Meniere's Disease.

HYPOTHESIS/BACKGROUND: Bast's valve is a poorly understood inner ear structure located at the junction between pars superior and inferior in the membranous labyrinth. Anatomically precise three-dimensional reconstructions (3D-reconstructions) of Bast's valve can help illuminate the morphology of the valve, and point toward its role in normal physiology and pathological states such as endolymphatic hydrops. This is of particular relevance to the development of a vestibular implant, a device intended to rehabilitate deficits in the vestibular system. METHODS: Six postmortem human temporal bones

Breakdown of stria vascularis blood-labyrinth barrier in C3H/lpr autoimmune disease mice.

Sensorineural hearing loss related to autoimmune disease is a well-recognized condition, although the exact pathophysiologic mechanisms remain unclear. One current theory postulates immune complex-induced interference with blood-labyrinth barrier integrity in the stria vascularis. The C3H/lpr autoimmune mouse was chosen to study the permeability of capillaries in the stria vascularis because this mouse model has demonstrated abnormalities of the stria vascularis and shifts in the auditory brain stem response threshold during active disease. C3H/lpr mice with active disease were compared with y

[A case of Paget's disease with progressive sensorineural hearing loss involved in the bilateral bony labyrinths].

Paget's disease of the bone is a chronic, progressive disease of unknown etiology characterized by abnormal bony resorption and deposition. It is a common skeletal disease in Europe and North America, while in Japan it is very rare. Paget's disease of the temporal bone has been reported to cause hearing loss frequently. We report a 50-year-old woman with Paget's disease who had progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and right vestibular dysfunction. CT and 3 Dimensional CT (3D-CT) images demonstrated resorption of the entire bony labyrinth and its surroundings on both sides and that

Herniation of the membranous labyrinth into the horizontal semicircular canal is correlated with impaired caloric response in Ménière's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Canal paresis of the horizontal semicircular canal in Ménière's disease is a frequent finding. Endolymphatic hydrops is the single most characteristic morphologic finding in Ménière's disease. However, the relationship between endolymphatic hydrops and canal paresis is still not elucidated. METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging to visualize herniation of parts of the vestibular membranous labyrinth into the horizontal semicircular canal and correlated this morphologic feature with the caloric function of the horizontal semicircular canal. RESULTS: Patients who showed hern

Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography imaging of the membranous labyrinth in patients with Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSION: Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (3DCT) images revealed characteristic malformations of the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear in Meniere's disease (MD). The morphology of the membranous region between the vestibular cecum of the cochlea and the saccule of ears with MD was compared to that of healthy ears. The present study supports the hypothesis proposed earlier that reuniting duct blockade is a result of the dislodgement of saccular otoconia. OBJECTIVE: To visualize the membranous labyrinth using 3DCT and to investigate the pathology of MD. METHODS: A prepara
