Their identification and isolation for structural characterization require strict avoidance of alkaline treatments, a common step in standard ganglioside purification protocols used to eliminate glycerophospholipid contamination. After 2000, scientific interest in alkali-labile gangliosides declined significantly, resulting in a dearth of new information and few updates on their biological significance.

A convergent stereoselective synthesis of a C1/C14 bis-epimer of uprolide D is described in which an intramolecular Barbier-type reaction was employed for macrocyclization with concomitant introduction of the C1 and C14 stereocenters of a fused α-methylene lactone ring through an anti-Felkin-Anh transition state. Unlike previous examples of allyl chromium additions, none of the Felkin-Anh derived adduct could be detected.

Stable endoperoxides 4 are best prepared by photooxygenation of 1 with 2 equiv of O(2) in the presence of CuSO(4) and p-TosOH following a nonradical mechanism. 6278 patients were patch tested with a sesquiterpene lactone mix (SL-mix) in 10 European clinics. 4011 patients were tested only with 0.1% SL-mix, 63 (approximately 1.5%) of whom were positive, with 26 (41%) of these cases being considered clinically relevant.
