Relationship between language and fluency in children with developmental language disorders.

The present investigation addresses two primary hypotheses: (a) that a subset of children with developmental language disorders exhibits significantly more disfluencies than other children with language disorders and (b) that differences between the disfluent and nondisfluent groups observed in fluency may be related to differences in language deficits. Spontaneous language samples from 60 preschool children with developmental language disorders were analyzed for frequency and type of disfluencies. Comparisons of the frequency of disfluencies across subjects revealed that a subset of 10 subjec…

Sign language aphasia.

Signed languages are naturally occurring, fully formed linguistic systems that rely on the movement of the hands, arms, torso, and face within a sign space for production, and are perceived predominantly using visual perception. Despite stark differences in modality and linguistic structure, functional neural organization is strikingly similar to spoken language. Generally speaking, left frontal areas support sign production, and regions in the auditory cortex underlie sign comprehension-despite signers not relying on audition to process language. Given this, should a deaf or hearing signer su…

Language beyond action.

The discovery of mirror neurons in macaques and of a similar system in humans has provided a new and fertile neurobiological ground for rooting a variety of cognitive faculties. Automatic sensorimotor resonance has been invoked as the key elementary process accounting for disparate (dys)functions, like imitation, ideomotor apraxia, autism, and schizophrenia. In this paper, we provide a critical appraisal of three of these claims that deal with the relationship between language and the motor system. Does language comprehension require the motor system? Was there an evolutionary switch from manu…

Neural correlates of second-language communication and the effect of language anxiety.

Communicative speech is a type of language use that involves goal-directed action targeted at another person based on social interactive knowledge. Previous studies regarding one's first language (L1) have treated the theory of mind system, which is associated with understanding others, and the sensorimotor system, which is associated with action simulation, as important contributors to communication. However, little is known about the neural basis of communication in a second language (L2), which is limited in terms of its use as a communication tool. In this fMRI study, we manipulated the ty…

Specific language impairment is not specific to language: the procedural deficit hypothesis.

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) has been explained by two broad classes of hypotheses, which posit either a deficit specific to grammar, or a non-linguistic processing impairment. Here we advance an alternative perspective. According to the Procedural Deficit Hypothesis (PDH), SLI can be largely explained by the abnormal development of brain structures that constitute the procedural memory system. This system, which is composed of a network of inter-connected structures rooted in frontal/basal-ganglia circuits, subserves the learning and execution of motor and cognitive skills. Crucially, r…

The effects of heritage multilingualism on foreign language learning: a comparison of children with typical language development and developmental language disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Both multilingualism and developmental language disorder (DLD) may be associated with inferior performance in the majority language, albeit for different reasons. At the same time, there is a growing body of evidence that multilingualism may have a positive effect on foreign language performance. This study tests the hypothesis that the positive effects of multilingualism on foreign language learning may be smaller in children with DLD compared to their multilingual peers with typical language development. METHODS: In a 2 × 2 design, we compare the effects of multilingualism and…

Reframing language decisions for d/Deaf children through family language policy.

For families of deaf children, early language planning is often shaped by high-pressure decisions and conflicting professional advice. This brief introduces Family Language Policy (FLP) as a practical, strengths-based framework for supporting communication decisions following cochlear implantation. Rather than framing oral and visual languages as competing approaches, FLP acknowledges the diverse values, beliefs, and contexts that shape each family's choices. Drawing on bilingualism research and findings from (McMenamin, 2019) this article highlights that developmental outcomes are not determi…

Wine chemistry and language bottleneck hypothesis: insights from large language models.

Despite the development of novel tools for automatic food quality control, human taste perception is difficult to represent on computers in textual or conceptual space forms. Wine is a particularly interesting object of taste studies because of its elaborate terminology. We investigate taste perception at three different levels: the chemical composition of wine (∼100 parameters), the interaction of ligands with taste receptors (<10 parameters), and wine language terminology (∼25 axes). Wine terminology is studied via the analysis of binary oppositions. Given that wine terminology is often perc…

Language processing in emergencies recruits both language and default mode networks.

Effective language processing in emergencies is crucial for professionals, including firefighters, soldiers, and doctors. Substantial research has been undertaken on language processing in silence, with several studies indicating the impact of noise on language processing in non-emergencies. However, it remains unclear about the neural mechanisms involved in language processing during emergencies, especially the role of the language network (LN) and the default mode network (DMN) in such contexts. In this study, we adopted functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate brain acti…

The Spoken Language Checklist: A User-Friendly Normed Language Acquisition Checklist.

There are many variables having an impact on the spoken language acquisition of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children; therefore, it is critical for parents and professionals to have appropriate tools to monitor language acquisition. The Spoken Language Checklist (SLC) was developed to monitor and identify developmental milestones in a user-friendly checklist format that includes norms. The availability of the SLC will help parents and professionals to monitor the spoken language development of DHH children and provide interventions that should any delays be observed. Recognizing these delay…

Language beyond the language system: Dorsal visuospatial pathways support processing of demonstratives and spatial language during naturalistic fast fMRI.

Spatial demonstratives are powerful linguistic tools used to establish joint attention. Identifying the meaning of semantically underspecified expressions like "this one" hinges on the integration of linguistic and visual cues, attentional orienting and pragmatic inference. This synergy between language and extralinguistic cognition is pivotal to language comprehension in general, but especially prominent in demonstratives. In this study, we aimed to elucidate which neural architectures enable this intertwining between language and extralinguistic cognition using a naturalistic fMRI paradigm. …

Analog language teaching versus natural language teaching: generalization and retention of language learning for adults with autism and mental retardation.

Examined the effects of two instructional methods on language generalization and long-term retention in 23 adults with autism and severe to profound mental retardation. Analog language teaching employed discrete trials in a controlled setting concentrating on discrimination and identification of materials. Natural language teaching emphasized instruction through interactions that occurred incidentally to training students in the use of materials to perform functional tasks. Assessments were conducted under conditions favoring analog teaching to assure against partiality toward natural language…

The effects of multisensory structured language instruction on native language and foreign language aptitude skills of at-risk high school foreign language learners: A replication and follow-up study.

According to research findings, most students who experience foreign language learning problems are thought to have overt or subtle native language learning difficulties, primarily with phonological processing. A recent study by the authors showed that when a multisensory structured language approach to teaching Spanish was used with a group of at-risk high school students, the group's pre- and posttest scores on native language phonological processing, verbal memory and vocabulary, and foreign language aptitude measures significantly improved. In this replication and follow-up study, the auth…

Efficacy of speech therapy in children with language disorders: specific language impairment compared with language impairment in comorbidity with cognitive delay.

OBJECTIVE: this article discusses the effect of speech therapy on language comprehension, language production and non-verbal functioning in two groups of children with developmental language disorders. DESIGN: retrospective study-a follow-up after a mean of 2 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: verbal and non-verbal functioning before and after therapy were examined in 31 language-impaired children with normal hearing and good health. In 16 children the language functioning was substantial behind their non-verbal functioning. They were categorised as children with specific language impairment (SLI…

Language-agnostic, Automated Assessment of Listeners' Speech Recall Using Large Language Models.

Speech-comprehension difficulties are common among older people. Standard speech tests do not fully capture such difficulties because the tests poorly resemble the context-rich, story-like nature of ongoing conversation and are typically available only in a country's dominant/official language (e.g., English), leading to inaccurate scores for native speakers of other languages. Assessments for naturalistic, story speech in multiple languages require accurate, time-efficient scoring. The current research leverages modern large language models (LLMs) in native English speakers and native speaker…
