When nurses are held accountable for AI-driven clinical decisions, they must be engaged early and meaningfully.

Health systems are adopting AI-powered tools faster than policy can address the implications for clinician liability. Nurses, as the largest healthcare profession and the most proximal clinicians to patients, must decide whether to accept, modify, or override AI-derived recommendations, often while managing competing cognitive demands. Yet the question of who bears responsibility when AI contributes to patient harm remains unresolved in policy and case law. At the 2025 American Medical Informatics Association Annual Symposium, a structured debate examined whether nurses should be held liable f

Leveling the playing field for nursing students with disabilities: implications of the amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Faculty have reported a significant increase in the number of nursing students with disabilities; however, misinformation regarding legislated changes in the definition of a disability, as enacted in 2008 under the American with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, has contributed to faculty confusion when working with students with disabilities. This article identifies the circumstances under which nursing faculty are legally required to provide reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended in 2008, and the strate

Induced abortion: epidemiological aspects.

Sir Dugald Baird sketches the history of abortion legislation in Great Britain from the beginning of the century. In his views the 1967 Abortion Act has been one of the most important and beneficial pieces of social legislation enacted in Britain in the last 100 years. It has, however, brought problems both of administration in the hospitals and to individual doctors and nurses, particularly when the patients are young single women and even schoolgirls. One of the consequences of the Abortion Act has been a fall in maternal mortality and perinatal mortality rates. Abortion does not seem to be

A profile of Colorado nurse--midwives: implications for health care.

Nurse-midwives provide significant health care to underserved and vulnerable women, yet there is limited information about the nature of nurse-midwifery practices and compensation for services. This study reports the results of a Colorado statewide survey of nurse-midwives (N = 217). Electronic survey was utilized to detail practice in seven areas: demographics, type of practice, compensation, leadership, legislative priorities, teaching involvement, and practice satisfaction. Responses (N = 114) were analyzed using SPSS 13.0. Results found wide variation in compensation and practice types. Res

Effects of stricter legislation on coercive measures in child and adolescent psychiatric care: a qualitative interview study with staff.

BACKGROUND: Legislators often want to positively affect psychiatric inpatient care and reduce coercion by a stricter judicial regulation. However, staff experiences and comprehension of such legal changes are largely unknown, yet essential in obtaining the intended outcomes. We examined staff understanding and implementation of a July 1, 2020 legal change in Sweden regarding the use of coercive measures (e.g., restraint, seclusion, and forced medication) in child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient care. METHODS: During 2021, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine child and adol

Pushing boundaries in paediatric intensive care: training as a paediatric retrieval nurse practitioner.

Traditionally in the UK, the transportation of the critically ill child to a paediatric intensive care unit has been carried out by a medically led team of doctors and nurses. However, in countries such as the USA and Canada, appropriately trained nurse practitioners have proven to be competent in the transportation of these vulnerable children. This nurse-led team model has also been shown to be successful in the speciality of neonatal care in the UK. The impact of changes in the National Health Service (NHS) has led to an increased demand for the transportation of the child requiring paediat

Patient-related violence against emergency department nurses.

In a finding that reflects international experiences, nurses in Australia have been identified as the occupation at most risk of patient-related violence in the health-care sector. A search of the literature was undertaken to explore this concept, with a focus on the emergency department and triage nurses. Significant findings included the fact that nurses are subjected to verbal and physical abuse so frequently that, in many instances, it has become an accepted part of the job. This attitude, combined with the chronic under-reporting of violent incidents, perpetuates the normalization of viol

"These Laws Will Be Devastating": Provider Perspectives on Legislation Banning Gender-Affirming Care for Transgender Adolescents.

PURPOSE: The standards of care for transgender and gender diverse youth (TGDY) experiencing gender dysphoria are well-established and include gender-affirming medical interventions. As of July 2021, 22 states have introduced or passed legislation that bans the provision of gender-affirming medical care to anyone under the age of 18 even with parent or guardian consent. The purpose of this study is to understand what providers who deliver gender-affirming medical care to TGDY think about this legislation. METHODS: In March 2021, we recruited participants via listservs known to be frequented by

Infants in Drug Withdrawal: A National Description of Nurse Workload, Infant Acuity, and Parental Needs.

Infants in drug withdrawal have complex physiological and behavioral states, requiring intensive nursing care. The study objectives were to describe acuity, parental needs, and nurse workload of infants in drug withdrawal compared with other infants. The design was cross-sectional and involved secondary nurse survey data from 6045 staff nurses from a national sample of 104 neonatal intensive care units. Nurses reported the care of 15 233 infants, 361 (2.4%) of whom were in drug withdrawal. Three-fourths of hospitals had at least 1 infant in drug withdrawal. In these hospitals, the mean number

Occupational health nursing in Thailand. Insight into international occupational health.

1. As a country that is both agricultural by nature, and moving toward new industrialization, Thailand is increasingly facing work related health problems. Major occupational illnesses are pesticide poisoning, silicosis, byssinosis, lead poisoning, and occupational injuries. 2. Although the demand for occupational health services is high, occupational health services in Thailand are still not comprehensive. 3. Because of the lack of role perception and inadequate preparation, Thai occupational health nurses have limited functions in providing occupational health services. The services are prim

Provision of comprehensive perinatal services through rural outreach: a model program.

A university-based program of perinatal care was extended to serve a spectrum of underserved populations through both urban and rural outreach. The program centered on the use of a multidisciplinary health care team comprised of a physician, nurse-midwife, health educator, social worker, nutritionist, pediatric nurse-practitioner, and patient case manager for health service delivery. It emphasized a decentralized service model with central referral and management of high-risk problems. The program has become a model for perinatal access and is reflected in current state legislation. The implem

[Isolation and restraint in psychiatry: practice and feedback from professional experiences].

A psychiatric nurse since 2013, who became a clinical psychologist in 2022, I have had the opportunity, on numerous occasions, to use isolation and therapeutic restraint as part of my nursing practice, mainly in a closed psychiatric admissions service. These therapeutic tools, specific to psychiatry, are used in a very specific theoretical and legislative framework. Their use always leads to reflection, both individually and as a team. Indeed, their use must remain the last therapeutic bulwark to be used because it can be experienced with difficulty or even in a traumatic way by the patient, w

States Should Remove Barriers to Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Prescriptive Authority to Increase Access to Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder.

In October 2018, President Trump signed into law H.R. 6, the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities Act. This piece of legislation addresses treatment, prevention, recovery, and enforcement with particular attention to access in rural areas. It contains numerous provisions to improve needed access to treat substance use disorders and especially opioid use disorder (OUD), including mandatory coverage of medications for OUD, partial elimination of Medicaid payment for inpatient mental health treatment, and state planning grants

[Ethical problems concerning artificial fecondation].

In view of the seriousness of the facts regarding artificial fecondation as reported in the news and by the mass media, the various experiments carried out are analysed from the anthropological and ethical points of view. The purpose of these experiments is the procreation of a person and all those who are implicated in vital decisions-physicians, nurses, legislators and families-are invited to refrain from carrying out experiments or actions that might be damaging to the dignity of people and the couple in question.

The impact of U.S. policies to protect healthcare workers from bloodborne pathogens: the critical role of safety-engineered devices.

In the United States (U.S.), federal legislation requiring the use of safety-engineered sharp devices, along with an array of other protective measures, has played a critical role in reducing healthcare workers' (HCWs) risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens over the last 20 years. We present the history of U.S. regulatory and legislative actions regarding occupational blood exposures, and review evidence of the impact of these actions. In one large network of U.S. hospitals using the Exposure Prevention Information Network (EPINet) sharps injury surveillance program, overall inj

Ethnicity, academic skills and nursing student achievement.

In 1982, Florida legislation mandated the use of the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) to measure student achievement in college-level communication and computation skills. The exam is currently used in Florida's schools of higher education as a requirement for admittance to the junior year. This article addresses the CLAST as a predictor variable of academic success for students (N = 55) seeking a baccalaureate degree in nursing and for their ability to pass the examination for registered nurse licensure on their first attempt. The study also looks at other factors such as student gr
