Lemierre's syndrome is an anaerobic suppurative thrombophlebitis involving the internal jugular vein secondary to oropharyngeal infection. There is only one previous case report in pregnancy which was complicated by premature delivery of an infant that suffered significant neurological damage. We present an atypical case diagnosed in the second trimester with a live birth at term. By reporting this case, we hope to increase the awareness of obstetricians to the possibility of Lemierre's syndrome when patients present with signs of unabating oropharyngeal infection and pulmonary symptoms.

A week after onset of a pharyngo-tonsillitis a previously healthy 23-year-old man developed high fever (41.4 degrees C), leukocytosis (12,200/microliters) with marked shift to the left, thrombocytopenia (86,000/microliters) and increased transaminases (GOT 83 U/l, GPT 113 U/l). Chest x-ray film suggested intrapulmonary abscesses with left-sided pleural effusion. The suspected diagnosis of "post-tonsillitis" septicaemia (Lemierre's syndrome) was confirmed by demonstrating anaerobic, fusiform, gram-negative bacteria (Fusobacterium nucleatum and necrophorum) in several blood cultures. Despite ant

A 21-year-old woman presented with a sore throat and systemic symptoms, including fever, diarrhea, and chest pain, progressing to sepsis. Imaging revealed a pharyngeal abscess, thrombophlebitis of the left internal jugular vein, and septic emboli. Blood cultures confirmed Fusobacterium necrophorum, and the patient was diagnosed with Lemierre's syndrome. Empirical antibiotics were adjusted to ampicillin-sulbactam based on culture results, leading to a full recovery after a month-long treatment course. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of Lemierre's syndrome, its severe complication

Lemierre's syndrome can be fatal if diagnosed late or not treated appropriately. We herein report a 40-year-old woman with a fever and pain with tenderness in her palms after the administration of antibiotics for pharyngotonsillitis. She was diagnosed with Lemierre's syndrome, and her symptoms improved after the administration of intravenous ampicillin-sulbactam. In this case, the palmar lesions indicated septic emboli and were an important finding in recognizing Lemierre's syndrome. Lemierre's syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with a persistent fever foll

Otalgia with mastoiditis is an infrequently encountered complication of acute otitis media (Pfaff and Moore, 2018). Even more rare is the development of infected jugular venous thrombosis, Lemierre's disease. We present a case of a six year-old girl with otalgia for over two months who presented to our Emergency Department (ED) with clinical mastoiditis, confirmed on CT scan, as well as an incidental diagnosis of complete thrombosis of the internal jugular (IJ) vein, Lemierre's syndrome. The true prevalence of Lemierre's from mastoiditis is difficult to discern. This clinical case highlights t

A young previously healthy patient presented with sepsis and cavitating pneumonia. Campylobacter rectus was isolated from blood cultures and subsequent CT neck showed an internal jugular vein thrombosis. Treatment was with antibiotics, anticoagulation and supportive management. Lemierre's syndrome is an infectious thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. Although a rare diagnosis since the use of penicillin for treatment of acute pharyngitis, it is being reported with increasing frequency. Usually associated with Fusobacterium spp, we believe that this is the first reported case of Lemie

Lemierre's syndrome is an often un-diagnosed disease seen in previously healthy young subjects, presenting with symptoms of pharyngitis, fever and elevated markers of inflammation. The syndrome is characterised by infectious thrombosis of the jugular vein due to infection with Fusobacteria, causing a variety of infectious complications. Rapid diagnosis and treatment is necessary to avoid severe complications or death. Close collaboration with local microbiologist is pivotal. Treatment consists of longterm treatment with penicillin and metronidazole. This is a case report of Lemierre's syndrome

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by a history of recent oropharyngeal infection, clinical or radiological evidence of internal jugular vein thrombosis, and isolation of anaerobic pathogens, mainly Fusobacterium necrophorum. It was once called the forgotten disease because of its rarity, but it may not be that uncommon after all. This review aims to provide physicians with an update on the etiology, management, and prognosis of Lemierre's syndrome.
METHODS: Systematic review using the terms: Lemierre's syndrome, postanginal septicemia, fusobacterium, internal jugular

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to recall the pathogenesis, clinic aspects and therapeutic options for Lemierre's syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study (1998-2005) of 4 patients, 3 males and 1 female, average age 22 years (18-30). Bacteriological samples, a chest radiograph and a cervical and thoracic CT-scan with injection were available for all patients who were given broad spectrum antibiotic therapy for 3 to 6 weeks. Surgical treatment was necessary for 3 patients. A review of the literature from Medline was performed.
RESULTS: Three patients had a peritonsillar abscess.

It has been suggested that a previous viral or bacterial pharyngitis may predispose to Lemierre's syndrome, an uncommon entity nowadays. A case of Lemierre's syndrome and co-infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae is described, association published before in only 2 other cases. A 16-year-old girl with trombophlebitis of the left jugular vein, Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia and septic emboli in the lung requiring mechanical ventilation due to severe respiratory insufficiency. Despite early treatment with penicillin G and clindamycin, fever and part of pulmonary affectation persisted until t

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre syndrome is characterized by a septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) following an oropharyngeal infection.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of Lemierre syndrome that occurred in a context of angina and necrotizing cellulitis of the neck in a 45-year-old patient. The Doppler ultrasound exam of the neck vessels and a neck CT showed an IJV thrombophlebitis. No germ could be isolated in the samples (blood culture, pus). The treatment associated antibiotics, heparin and surgical debridement of the necrotic tissues with extraction of the thrombus after ligat…

UNLABELLED: Abscess formation is a rare cause of febrile illness in childhood but always has to be considered in such clinical presentations. Belonging to the resident flora of the oropharyngeal region, Fusobacteria are known to cause local infections; from here they may extend to other sites via the bloodstream or are aspirated into the lung (Lemierre disease). We report on two boys with Lemierre disease due to infection by Fusobacteria in monoculture causing two different clinical phenotypes. Case 1 presented with a large subphrenic abscess and pneumonic infiltration of the right middle lobe

Postanginal sepsis or Lemierre's syndrome is characterised by septic thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein, metastatic abscesses in the lungs, soft tissues, joints or elsewhere, occurring several days to two weeks after tonsillitis or pharyngitis. The primary pathogen is a Gram-negative anaerobic rod, mostly Fusobacterium necrophorum. Previously healthy, young adults are affected mainly and the syndrome was seen more frequently in the pre-antibiotic era than it is nowadays. In the three young patients described here, a girl aged 15 and two boys aged 18 and 16, F. necrophorum was isolated from b

Lemierre syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and hematogenous dissemination of septic emboli. Although classically associated with oropharyngeal infections, atypical presentations from odontogenic sources are increasingly recognized and may complicate early diagnosis. We report the case of a 29-year-old male patient who developed Lemierre syndrome following lower third molar extraction. He presented with right cervical swelling, dysphonia, odynophagia, and cough. Laboratory findings showed leukocyto…
