Physical disability, rehabilitation, and health promotion: a case study in Brazil.

Reflecting on the health promotion for people with physical impairments implies considering the specificities and meanings attributed to the life experience of each subject throughout their careers. As such, this study was designed to investigate the experience of a man with an acquired physical disability after an accident that damaged his spine. This injury caused a permanent inability to move his legs. It is a case study that used the life history technique to capture its experience. The participant was born in a rural context, and since he was a child, he had to work to help his family. At

A 'near-life experience': lived experiences of spirituality from the perspective of people who have been subject to inpatient psychiatric care.

AIMS: To describe lived experiences of spirituality from the perspective of people who have been subject to inpatient psychiatric care and to interpret these experiences from an understanding of health as dialectical. METHODS: After approval from a regional ethical board, eleven participants were recruited from two organisations for people with mental health problems. Participants were asked to narrate about spiritual experiences and occasions where such experiences had come close. The transcribed interviews were analysed by means of a phenomenological hermeneutical approach. FINDINGS: A str

Dissociative amnesia: Disproportionate retrograde amnesia, stressful experiences and neurological circumstances.

Dissociative amnesias have been reported in neurological episodes mild enough to not cause any visible lesions on morphological examination. Disproportionate retrograde amnesia with or without identity loss happens in the context of psychological trauma (known or not). In metabolic imaging studies, some authors have reported functional alterations, particularly in the bilateral hippocampus, right temporal regions and inferolateral prefrontal cortex, despite normal morphological imaging. To avoid the presumption of an organic, psychogenic or mixed origin for such changes, De Renzi et al. sugges

Modified crisis intervention for personality disorder.

This study proposes that the goal of crisis intervention for persons with personality disorders should be to return them to their pre-crisis level of functioning, even though this is maladaptive. This is contrasted with standard crisis intervention, which aims to return normal or neurotic persons to their pre-crisis normal or neurotic functioning, usually by means of few and short-term therapeutic encounters. The modification proposed costs more time and resources in persons with personality disorders in crisis and fits the intervention to the personality type. This is illustrated by the case

Depression in new fathers.

There is a growing awareness about the burden of ill-health experienced by men. Research has shown that fatherhood has a protective effect on men's health. However, the transition can be complex and demanding, and may cause distress, anxiety and increased risk of depression. This article discusses paternal postnatal depression, which is a significant public health issue that is not acknowledged widely or well researched. As a result, men are under-screened, under-diagnosed and under-treated for the condition and other postnatal mental health problems, causing detrimental effects on their healt

The scientific status of neurotic depression.

The concept of neurotic depression was introduced in the early part of the 20th century. The concept has undergone many revisions, and recently was discontinued as a category in the DSM-III. In the past, neurotic depression was referred to as a nonpsychotic form of depression, a nonendogenous depression, as well as many other categories. The presence of various meanings has made it difficult to develop algorithms for neurotic depression; the findings substantiate the decision of the DSM-III not to continue the category of neurotic depression.

Content of waking life events and of nightmare themes.

Examined the relationship of incidence of 3 types of nightmare themes to incidence of specific events listed in the Social Readjustment Rating Scale and in the Life Events Inventory. The former list of events was administered to 98 and the latter to 56 part-time college students. Information on nightmares' content was available for both samples. Events and nightmare themes were retrospectively reported for the last 6 mo. No significant relationships were found between specific types of nightmare content and specific events. Persons who experienced more events of the Life Events Inventory also

Cumulative life course impairment in patients with dermatological diseases, with a focus on psoriasis.

The concept of "Cumulative Life Course Impairment" (CLCI) characterizes the set of factors harmful to the lives of patients resulting from the stigma and physical and psychological impairment associated with different chronic diseases, which can accumulate irreversibly over the course of patients lives. The sum of these factors often makes it impossible for these individuals to enjoy their lives fully, intensely and adequately. On the other hand, CLCI also incorporates coping strategies, including external factors and personality characteristics, which may act as modulating or protective facto

Adverse events over the life course and later-life wellbeing and depressive symptoms in older people.

OBJECTIVES: Exposures to adverse events are associated with impaired later-life psychological health. While these associations depend on the type of event, the manner in which associations for different event types depend on when they occur within the life course has received less attention. We investigated associations between counts of adverse events over the life course, and wellbeing and mental health outcomes in older people, according to their timing (age of occurrence), orientation (self or other) and, both their timing and orientation. DESIGN: Linear and logistic random-effects models

Life history model of adaptation to disability: the case of a 'congenital amputee'.

Life histories can be used to describe adaptation over time to disabling conditions and the context and meaning of disabilities. Data from the life history of Diane DeVries, a 33-year old woman born with quadralateral limb deficiencies (upper extremity hemimelia, lower extremity amelia) illustrate a model for eliciting, presenting and interpreting life histories of persons with disabilities. Substantively, the life history of Diane DeVries indicates, at this time, survival within a niche of institutional supports that include marriage, church membership, and government for the disabled. The life experiences of living liver donors: A qualitative meta-synthesis.

As living liver transplantation has become a standard treatment method with a high success rate, many studies have investigated the experiences of living liver donors; however, their results have not been integrated. This qualitative meta-synthesis aimed to explore the life experiences of living liver donors to provide an in-depth understanding of meaningful common experiences. A comprehensive search on qualitative studies published in English or Korean was conducted in October 2021. The PRISMA statement was used for reporting each phase of the literature search, and MAXQDA2020 software was us

Decentering predicts attenuated perseverative thought and internalizing symptoms following stress exposure: A multi-level, multi-wave study.

While research identifies a growing list of risk factors for anxiety and depression, it is equally important to identify potential protective factors that may prevent or reduce vulnerability to developing internalizing psychopathology. We hypothesized that forms of perseverative thinking, such as rumination and worry, act as mechanisms linking negative life experiences and prospective symptoms of anxiety and depression. More specifically, we investigated whether decentering, the meta-cognitive capacity to adopt a distanced perspective toward one's thoughts and feelings, serves as a protective

A life course approach to understanding associations between natural environments and mental well-being for the Danish blood donor cohort.

Natural environments have been associated with mental health benefits, but globally access to these benefits is threatened by urban development and densification. However, it remains unclear how natural environments relate to mental health and how consistent the association is across populations. Here we use a life-course approach with a population consisting of 66 194 individuals from the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS) to investigate the association between green and blue space (e.g. parks and lakes) and self-evaluated mental well-being. Green and blue space was identified from remotely-sens

Association between childhood adversities and psychopathology onset throughout the lifespan: Findings from a large metropolitan population.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversities (ECA) are deleterious experiences that can occur during individuals' development, which has been associated with several negative health outcomes. AIM: Analyze the effect of ECA on the onset of DSM-IV disorders throughout life. METHOD: The Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was used in a stratified, multistage area probability sample of 5037 individuals aged 18 or more to assess the presence of childhood adversities, 20 psychiatric disorders and their ages of onset. Discrete-time survival models were performed to estimate the odds of disorde
