BACKGROUND: Asian Americans are at elevated risk for poor diabetes outcomes, with substantial heterogeneity in disease burden across origin groups. Limited English proficiency (LEP) may further exacerbate disparities. Diabetes care plans are crucial drivers of a person's ability to engage in diabetes self-management, yet Asian Americans may have reduced access to care plans.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of race and ethnicity, and LEP with receiving a diabetes care plan, and whether LEP status modifies this association.
METHODS: 2013-2022 California Health Interview Survey data were …

BACKGROUND: Previous research has reported that Australians with limited English proficiency are less likely to be included in clinical trials due to language, literacy, and cultural factors. In the pain field, participants with limited English proficiency are three times more likely to be excluded from research, whereas in low back pain trials, 1 in 5 participants are excluded. This low representation can limit the generalisability of research findings to Australia's diverse population, and strategies are required to facilitate the inclusion of participants with limited English proficiency in…

BACKGROUND: Low health literacy can present significant risks throughout pregnancy, impacting both maternal and fetal health outcomes. Those who do not speak the main language of their country of residence are more likely to have lower health literacy. Considering the heightened challenges faced by this demographic in accessing, understanding, and engaging with health information and services, designing and implementing tailored interventions is crucial to mitigate health disparities. This review aims to identify and examine health literacy interventions developed for pregnant women whose firs

More than 25 million Americans have limited English-language proficiency (LEP) according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This population experiences challenges accessing health care and is least likely to receive preventive health care, including screening mammogram. In a setting where the breast radiologist does not speak the language of their patient, using certified medical interpreter services is fundamental. Medical interpreter use is associated with improved clinical care and patient satisfaction and can potentially increase adherence to screening mammograms and follow-up in patients with LEP

INTRODUCTION: Health literacy, the ability to access, understand and use health information to make informed decisions, is a key determinant of maternal and infant health. In the United Kingdom, approximately one-third of the 600,000 babies born annually are to mothers born overseas, many of whom have limited English proficiency. This language barrier contributes significantly to health disparities. To address this, we co-produced a 6-week health literacy course for pregnant women with limited English proficiency in East London. Designed to empower participants, the course aimed to improve the…

OBJECTIVE: To compare maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes between women who are English proficient (EP) and those who have limited English proficiency (LEP).
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Single US academic medical centre with interpreter services.
POPULATION: All pregnant women with deliveries during the study period.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified EP and LEP individuals (categorised by self-report) who delivered at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, from 2015 to 2019. Overall composite adverse outcomes, as well as maternal and neonatal composite outcomes, w…

In multicultural healthcare settings, language barriers pose significant challenges, particularly in mental health where nuanced communication is vital. This manuscript examines the impact of limited English proficiency (LEP) on mental healthcare in New Zealand, where a substantial portion of the population and healthcare workforce are foreign-born. Despite official recommendations, professional interpreter use remains low, compromising care quality for LEP patients. The paper explores interpreters' roles beyond interpretation, including cultural mediation, while noting limitations in interpre…

IMPORTANCE: English language proficiency has been reported to correlate with disparities in health outcomes. Therefore, it is important to identify and describe the association of language barriers with perioperative care and surgical outcomes to inform efforts aimed at reducing health care disparities.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether limited English proficiency compared with English proficiency in adult patients is associated with differences in perioperative care and surgical outcomes.
EVIDENCE REVIEW: A systematic review was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Sociological Abstrac…

Acquiring literacy in English as a foreign language (EFL) is important for language development. However, many students enter middle school without adequate EFL literacy skills. This may indicate a gap between EFL literacy instruction theory and the classroom practice that is occurring in elementary school classrooms. The aim of this study was to explore the components of EFL literacy instruction as perceived by teachers. The study investigated whether perceptions of classroom practices are theoretically based, thus shedding light on the gap between EFL literacy theory and practice. The partic

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial distress in children with craniofacial anomalies is multifactorial. A known cause of childhood psychosocial distress is parental limited English proficiency; however, its role as a psychosocial stressor in the craniofacial anomaly population remains unknown. The current study aimed to understand the potential influence of parental English proficiency in children with craniofacial anomalies.
METHODS: Two hundred ninety-six children were prospectively evaluated at the University of California, Los Angels and the Orthopaedic Institute for Children using the Pediatric Pat…

BackgroundIn clinical scenarios, pediatricians prefer patient history over imaging to diagnose pediatric appendicitis because they wish to limit their patients' exposure to radiation. Language barriers between providers and patients with limited English proficiency may increase adverse outcomes, require more imaging studies, and lead to higher costs in cases of pediatric appendicitis.MethodsWe queried the pediatric-National Surgical Quality Improvement Project database for patients under age 16 who received appendectomies from 2011-2021 at a single institution. Patients were propensity matched…

BACKGROUND: Patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) face poorer surgical outcomes, yet language-access capacity varies by hospital.
OBJECTIVE: Compare 7-day readmission after common surgeries among adult patients with LEP at Language Serving Hospitals (LSH) and non-LSH, stratified by Spanish, Common Non-English, Non-Spanish (NENS) and Rare NENS Languages using the New Jersey State Inpatient Database.
RESULTS: 34,342 adult surgical patients were discharged from LSH with 2.5% readmitted compared to 5.0% of those from non-LSH. Patients from LSH who spoke Spanish, (aOR 0.46, 95% CI 0.40-…

BACKGROUND: Quantitative studies have shown that patients with limited English proficiency are less likely to undergo immediate breast reconstruction than English-proficient patients, yet patient experiences remain poorly characterized. To better understand this disparity, we explored the effects of language proficiency on communication during immediate breast reconstruction decision-making.
METHODS: We performed a qualitative analysis using semistructured interviews of 24 women (12 English proficient, 12 limited English proficient) who underwent mastectomy and were candidates for immediate b…

INTRODUCTION: Despite lower smoking prevalence than U.S.-born individuals, immigrants face disparities in smoking cessation treatment. Insurance status and limited English proficiency (LEP) impede their healthcare access, but their impact on tobacco cessation treatment remains unclear. This study examines smoking cessation treatment differences between immigrants and U.S.-born individuals and explores potential barriers to access for immigrants.
