[Noninvasive ventilation in chronic obstructive lung disease].

Non-invasive ventilation refers to ventilatory support without establishing an endotracheal airway. The advent positive-pressure ventilation delivered through a nasal or face mask has greatly expanded the use of non-invasive ventilation. In patients with acute respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive lung disease, non-invasive positive pressure ventilation reduces the need for intubation and related complications, shortens the duration of hospital stay and improves survival. The role of intermittent non-invasive long-term ventilation in the management of chronic respiratory failure relat

Lung transplantation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Emphysema is the fifth leading cause of death in North America. It is now the most common indication for lung transplantation worldwide. Since 1986, evolution in operative techniques and improvements in organ preservation and post-operative immunosuppression have resulted in impressive long-term survival results. Significant problems remain in terms of inadequate organ supply and chronic rejection; many more candidates could be transplanted if not for these two major limitations. However, other options are now available for the surgical management of patients with end-stage emphysema. The deci

[Spontaneous pneumothorax in chronic obstructive lung disease].

In the present study the aims were to analyse the difference in various treatment, complications and recurrence rates between patients with spontaneous pneumothorax and those associated with chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD). We made a retrospective analysis with regard to the therapy of all patients with spontaneous pneumothorax who were treated in the district lung hospital Lostau from 1. Jan 1986 to 31. Dec 1988 (171 patients, men: 136, women: 35). 45 patients suffered from a COLD (men: 42, women: 3). 3 methods of the treatment were set in: 1. conservative management by expectant obse

[Pathomorphology of chronic obstructive lung disease in the horse].

The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in horses is primarily based on a chronic bronchitis/bronchiolitis with constriction of the tubes in the lower respiratory tract. The outward appearance of the lung is characterized by a diffuse or marginal alveolar emphysema. The big bronchial tubes are usually not altered. Small bronchi and bronchioli can often be seen through the pulmonal pleura. On the sectional area they are visible as opaque grey-red nodules with a central lumen detectable under a magnifying glass. The histopathological picture of alterations in the bronchial tree can vary

Occupational therapy for chronic obstructive lung disease.

The role of occupational therapy in a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is described in this paper in terms of the evaluation and implementation of the role in the general hospital settings of two neighboring Cleveland institutions. Cleveland is a heavily industrialized urban region with a high concentration of patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Motivated by this fact and by the knowledge of the increasing incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the United States, therapists at the two facilities wanted o

Synthesis and Evaluation of Dendrimers for Autophagy Augmentation and Alleviation of Obstructive Lung Diseases.

Preservation of cellular homeostasis requires constant synthesis of fresh proteins and cellular organelles and efficient degradation or removal of damaged proteins and cellular components. This involves two cellular degradation processes or molecular mechanisms: the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy-lysosomal systems. Impairment of these catabolic processes has been linked to pathogenesis of a variety of chronic obstructive lung diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and CF (cystic fibrosis). Proteosomal and autophagic functions (proteostasis) are known to decline with

Lung Transplant for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) carries a high burden of morbidity and mortality to patient and a high cost to health care systems. Lung transplantation is a last resort available for end-stage COPD patients interested in pursuing it and meeting the strict transplant requirements. It requires commitment from patients and their loved ones to support them through this tough process. This review will cover history of transplant, indications, candidate selection, evaluation testing, transplant listing, type of transplant (single versus bilateral), posttransplant complications, immunos

Muco-Obstructive Lung Disease: A Systematic Review.

Muco-obstructive lung disease is a new classification under the diseases of respiratory tract. A lot of discussion is still going on regarding this new group of diseases. It is characterised by obstruction of the respiratory tract with a thick mucin layer. Usually in normal individuals, the mucus is swept out of the respiratory system while coughing in the form of sputum or phlegm, but if the consistency of the mucus is thick, or the amount is heavy or there is a certain defect in the ciliary function of the respiratory tract, the mucus is not cleared and it gets accumulated in the lungs alveo

[Chest wall mechanics in obstructive lung disease].

The effects of overinflation of the lung in obstructive lung disease on the function of chest wall (rib cage, diaphragm) were studied. Concerning the function of the rib cage, the lateral motion of the lower lateral rib cage was evaluated using several experimental models. The results showed that the lower lateral rib cage was moved by many factors, including the force of the diaphragm, rib cage, compliance of abdominal wall, zone of apposition and angle of the diaphragm at the part of its insertion into the rib cage with respect to the transverse section of the trunk. The inward motion of the

Use of ipratropium bromide in obstructive lung disease.

The chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, clinical efficacy, adverse effects, and dosage of ipratropium bromide are reviewed. Ipratropium bromide, a synthetic quaternary isopropyl derivative of atropine, interrupts vagally mediated bronchoconstriction by inhibiting the cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate system at parasympathetic nerve endings. Ipratropium bromide is poorly absorbed after oral and inhaled administration but diffuses rapidly into tissue after i.v. or i.m. administration. The elimination half-life is 3.2-3.8 hours. After inhalation, the drug is eliminated in the urine and

Particulates induced lung inflammation and its consequences in the development of restrictive and obstructive lung diseases: a systematic review.

Particulate matters (PMs) are significant components of air pollution in the urban environment. PMs with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) can penetrate to the alveolar area and introduce numerous compounds to the pneumocystis that can initiate inflammatory response. There are several questions about this exposure as follows: does PM2.5-induced inflammation lead to a specific disease? If yes, what is the form of the progressed disease? This systematic review was designed and conducted to respond to these questions. Four databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Embas

Similarities of metabolomic disturbances in prematurity-associated obstructive lung disease to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Prematurity-associated lung disease (PLD) is a long-term consequence of preterm-birth. Since the underlying mechanisms of PLD remain poorly characterised, we compared the urinary metabolome between recently described spirometry phenotypes of PLD. Preterm- and term-born children aged 7-12 years, from the Respiratory Health Outcomes in Neonates (RHiNO) cohort, underwent spirometry and urine collection. The urinary metabolome was analysed by gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Preterm-born children were classified into phenotypes of prematurity-associated obstructive lung disease

Multi-resolution classification of exhaled aerosol images to detect obstructive lung diseases in small airways.

Exhaled aerosol patterns have been used to detect obstructive respiratory diseases in the upper airways. Signals from small airway diseases are weak and may not manifest themselves in the exhaled aerosol patterns. Therefore, it will be more challenging to detect abnormalities in small airways. The objective of this study is to develop a simulation-based classification model that can accurately classify small airway diseases. The model performance was evaluated in five obstructed models that are located in lung bifurcations G7-9. The exhaled aerosol images were quantified using local fractal di

Environmental pollutants damage airway epithelial cell cilia: Implications for the prevention of obstructive lung diseases.

Mucociliary epithelium lining the upper and lower respiratory tract constitutes the first line of defense of the airway and lungs against inhaled pollutants and pathogens. The concerted beating of multiciliated cells drives mucociliary clearance. Abnormalities in both the structure and function of airway cilia have been implicated in obstructive lung diseases. Emerging evidence reveals a close correlation between lung diseases and environmental stimuli such as sulfur dioxide and tobacco particles. However, the underlying mechanism remains to be described. In this review, we emphasize the impor

Transforming growth factor-β superfamily in obstructive lung diseases. more suspects than TGF-β alone.

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are respiratory disorders and a major global health problem with increasing incidence and severity. Genes originally associated with lung development could be relevant in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/asthma, owing to either an early-life origin of adult complex diseases or their dysregulation in adulthood upon exposure to environmental stressors (e.g., smoking). The transforming growth factor (TGF)-β superfamily is conserved through evolution and is involved in a range of biological processes, both during development
