BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Many coronary artery disease (CAD) patients exhibit chronic low-grade inflammation. Carotenoids are anti-oxidants with potential anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we first assessed relationships between interleukin (IL)-6 and individual carotenoids in plasma from CAD patients. Testosterone was estimated by radioimmunoassay in molar vesicle fluid in 41 patients and theca-lutein cyst fluid in three patients with hydatidiform moles. The presence of luteinizing hormone receptors in human pineal glands from five females and three males, ranging in age from 61-89 yr, was examined by in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry. The results demonstrated the presence of these receptors at the mRNA and protein levels in all the pineal glands examined. Pineal gland luteinizing hormone receptors could potentially be involved in the regulation of melatonin synthesis.
