A young man with acute mania and unilateral cryptorchidism had plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations that were much higher than the maximum LH concentrations we have found in normal subjects and patients with schizophrenia. Seven oophorectomized patients were administered a total of 60,000 units of human chorionic gonadotropin over a 3-day period, and plasma testosterone levels were obtained. One of the 7 patients demonstrated a definitive response to the hormone but repeat testing proved to be negative. The potential role of luteinizing hormone in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome is discussed and current evidence linking LH to adrenal androgenesis is reviewed. Modifications that may be employed for future study are suggested.

Oxytocin-induced LH release from dispersed rat anterior pituitary cells in vitro was shown to be dependent on the steroidal environment. Preincubation of anterior pituitary cells with estradiol for 48 h enhanced the subsequent LH response to oxytocin (p less than 0.001). Maximal sensitization was observed with estradiol at 1 nM. The observation that heroin-addicted subjects are amenorrheic and/or hypogonadic suggested a possible role of endogenous opioid peptides (EOP) in the regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonodal axis. The presence of a terminal nerve in the avian brain has recently been reported. As the terminal nerve in other classes of vertebrates contains luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), we used immunocytochemistry to determine whether the pigeon terminal nerve also contained LHRH. We found LHRH-immunoreactivity in the olfactory nerve and in the olfactory bulb. The distribution of LHRH neurons was similar to the LHRH neuronal migration pathway during development.

In a retrospective international study 223 pregnancies induced with pulsatile hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) were evaluated. In patients with hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) and polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) the abortion rate was similar (10% vs 8.7%). Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) was used to induce LH surge and ovulation in 20 patients in whom follicular maturation was provoked by epimestrol, used in a dose of 5 mg/day from the fifth to 14th day of the cycle. Patients with elevated prolactin levels and galactorrhea were not included in the study.
