Scanning electron microscopy and immunologic methods, to detect the expression of a variety of surface markers, were performed on cells from 36 established human leukemia-lymphoid cell lines. The DNA configuration of the immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy and light chain genes and the expression of B-cell-related markers were evaluated in 13 cases of non-T, non-B, non-common ("null") acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Lymphocyte subpopulations were studied in 20 hypertransfused patients with beta-thalassaemia major, some of whom had been splenectomised. B-lymphocytes were normal but T-lymphocytes were decreased in all patients. The T-cell count was lower in the splenectomised patients than in the nonsplenectomised ones. In the former, the active rosette-forming lymphocytes were also diminished, but the difference was not significant. In all patients the percentage of null cells was greater and the activity of K-cells increased compared with controls.

The authors studied a blast cell immunological phenotype in 50 adults with lymphosarcoma undergoing leukemization following the pattern of acute leukemia. Among the patients there were 12 females and 38 males aged 14-61. Immunological phenotyping of tumor cells was performed using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to T- and B-lymphocyte antigens, to myelomonocytic cells, some nonlinear and activation antigens. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a lipid signaling molecule that regulates many cellular functions, is synthesized from sphingosine and ATP by the action of sphingosine kinase. A case of malignant lymphoma with a helper activity of neoplastic cells is reported. On admission, a significant number of plasma cells of polyclonal nature were seen in the peripheral blood, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia was seen. The biopsied lymph node showed poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma with marked proliferation of plasma cells. At the terminal stage, the patient became leukemic in contrast with the disappearance of plasma cells from the peripheral blood.
