Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by various species of Leishmania is a significant zoonotic disease in many parts of the world. We describe the first cases of Australian cutaneous leishmaniasis in eight northern wallaroos, one black wallaroo and two agile wallabies from the Northern Territory of Australia. Diagnosis was made through a combination of gross appearance of lesions, cytology, histology, direct culture, serology and a species-specific real-time PCR. The causative organism was found to be the same unique species of Leishmania previously identified in red kangaroos. These clinical findi

Primary inherited disorders of cornification in veterinary medicine are uncommon and rarely reported. Herein described is a unique syndrome associated with keratoderma that occurred in two Bennett's wallaby siblings (Macropus rufogriseus), and was characterized by profound thickening of the pad skin of all feet, generalized scaling of haired skin, and death within 7 weeks of out-of-pouch experience. The male also had depressed serum zinc levels. In addition, the male had, on electron microscopic exam of his skin, the presence of abnormal lipid deposits within the stratum corneum and stratum gr

A group of four red kangaroos (Megaleia rufa), a Bennett's wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus fruticus), and a Gunther's dik dik (Maloqua guentheri smithi) were presented over a 2-mo period with draining lesions over the thorax or on the lateral aspect of a hind leg. Only one animal exhibited more than one lesion. Physical examinations revealed infections with fly larvae. The parasites were manually removed and identified as Cuterebra spp. All of the affected animals survived, with no apparent side effects.

A protocol was developed for pellet-freezing spermatozoa of the tammar wallaby and the brushtail possum. Seren was collected by electro-ejaculation and wallaby spermatozoa were washed by 'swim-up' into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), whereas possum spermatozoa were not washed. Wallaby spermatozoa were screened for toxicity in diluents containing a range of cryoprotectants (0-10%): dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol and propanediol. Possum spermatozoa were tolerant of diluents containing 17.5% glycerol. Wallaby and possum spermatozoa were diluted 1:1 with the most promising cryoprotect

In this study the structures in the hindleg of the kangaroo which are potentially available for jumping were examined. Specimens of two species, Macropus giganteus and Aepyprymnus rufescens, were examined and are described and compared. The basic pattern of the jump of the two species is similar. This is reflected anatomically by the fact that in both species the extensors of the hip, knee and ankle as a percentage of the total weight of the hindleg are greater than the flexors of the same joints. An additional similarity is that the biceps femoris and adductor magnus have the greatest share i

Species of the Heterodoxus octoseriatus group infest five species, comprising eight chromosome races, of Petrogale in Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia. The precise host and geographic ranges of the 11 species of the H. octoseriatus group were determined. Individual hosts and host populations were infested by single species of lice only. The geographic ranges of lice were discrete. In some cases the geographic ranges of louse species and their hosts were approximately congruent. In others they were completely incongruent and it was unclear which species originally infested whi

The anaerobic gut fungi (AGF) inhabit the alimentary tracts of herbivores. In contrast to placental mammals, information regarding the identity, diversity, and community structure of AGF in marsupials is extremely sparse. Here, we characterized AGF communities in 61 fecal samples from 10 marsupial species belonging to four families in the order Diprotodontia: Vombatidae (wombats), Phascolarctidae (koalas), Phalangeridae (possums), and Macropodidae (kangaroos, wallabies, and pademelons). An amplicon-based diversity survey using the D2 region of the large ribosomal subunit as a phylogenetic mark…

An albino infant wallaby was born to a mother with wild-type body color. PCR and sequencing analyses of TYR (encoding tyrosinase, which is essential for melanin biosynthesis) of this albino wallaby revealed a 7.1-kb-long DNA fragment inserted in the first exon. Since the fragment carried long terminal repeats, we assumed it to be a copy of an endogenous retrovirus, which we named walb. We cloned other walb copies residing in the genomes of this species and of another wallaby species. The copies exhibited length variation, and the longest copy (>8.0 kb) contained open reading frames whose deduc

Oral disease, such as endodontic disease and macropod progressive periodontal disease (MPPD), which can progress to chronic alveolar osteomyelitis (CAO), have been identified as a common source of morbidity and mortality in captive macropods. This case series reviews the diagnosis and treatment of dental disease in eight captive Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) over the course of an 8-yr period (2011-2019) in a zoological collection. Two wallabies were treated at four separate times, for a total of 14 anesthetized dental surgical procedures. Two wallabies died after treatment for den

Seven Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus) presented within a period of several months with onychodystrophy, onychomadesis, and severe digital tumefaction. Histopathologic findings included a pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia of the claw matrix surrounding a cavity filled with keratin and septate hyphae stained with periodic acid Schiff reagent. The fungal species Chrysosporium keratinophilum was identified on cultures. The wallabies were orally treated with ketoconazole (15 mg/kg s.i.d.) for 20 wk. Material and enclosures were cleaned and sprayed with 0.2% enilconazole solutio

A total of 763 faecal samples were collected from western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) in Western Australia and screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium by PCR at the 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) locus. Samples that were positive at the 18S locus were also amplified at the actin locus. The overall prevalence was 9.3% (71/763). At the 18S rRNA locus, sequences were obtained for 28 of the 71 positives. Sequence analysis identified four species; Cryptosporidium fayeri in seven isolates, Cryptosporidium marcopodum in four isolates, Cryptosporidium xiaoi in six isolates and a novel genotyp

Healthy kangaroos are prone to sudden death. To investigate possible causes of this phenomenon, echocardiographic and electrocardiographic studies were conducted in seven healthy sedated (intramuscular ketamine 20 mg/kg, xylazine 2 mg/kg) kangaroos aged 1.5-5 years weighing 5.5-48 kg. As in human hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, kangaroos showed relative left ventricular hypertrophy measured as a ratio of (internal left ventricular end-diastolic diameter)/(septal + posterior wall thickness): 1.7 (SD 0.2) in kangaroos and 1.3 (SD 0.4) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy cf 2.6 (SD 0.6) in normal man (p

An outbreak of pasteurellosis caused by Pasteurella multocida is reported in which six elands (Taurotragus oryx), a gnu (Connochaetes taurinus albojubatus), a zebra (Equus bruchelli), five kangaroos (Macropus rufus), an ostrich (Struthio camelus camelus) and a bateleur eagle (Terathopius ecaudatus) died in Kano Zoological Gardens toward the end of the rainy season of 1978. Confirmation was based on cultural isolation of P. multocida. Analysis of likely factors that could have contributed to the outbreak indicated that it may have been precipitated initially by climatic stress associated with c

Macropotrema pertinax gen. et sp. nov. (Digenea: Paramphistomidae) is described from the caecum of the macropodid marsupial Macropus agilis (Gould, 1842) from northern Australia. The new genus is characterised as follows: ventro-terminal acetabulum bearing many papillae; oral sucker with constriction and paired diverticula; oesophagus with muscular bulb; cirrus sac and genital sucker absent; testes symmetrical, unlobed, preovarian; Laurer's canal opening anterior to excretory pore. The genus is placed in the subfamily Pseudodiscinae Näsmark, 1937. At the point where the worm attaches to the ca

We initiated a pathologic investigation of ocular disease in wallabies. Of 21 animals examined, the eyes were investigated histologically in 11; in four of these animals the brains were also available for section and the sera were investigated in three. In ten animals only sera were received. Histologic studies showed bilateral or unilateral cataract in five animals. Eight animals, with or without cataracts, showed various degrees of keratitis, uveitis, choroidoretinitis, or endophthalmitis. In three animals Toxoplasma cysts were found within the retina or brain, or both. Of the 13 cases exami

A progressive tremorgenic syndrome characterised by ataxia and head nodding is well documented in sheep and cattle affected by chronic Phalaris toxicosis (CPT), and is increasingly documented in the eastern grey kangaroo {(EGK), Macropus giganteus} in southeastern Australia. It is characterised on gross necropsy by areas of acquired localised pigment deposits within the brain. This pigment was previously considered a storage disease, but more recently has been determined to be a metabolic breakdown product of tryptamine alkaloids within Phalaris species (spp) of introduced grasses. The study i

PURPOSE: Animal models are frequently used to elucidate pathomechanism and pathophysiology of various disorders of the human intervertebral disc (IVD) and also to develop therapeutic approaches. Here we report morphological characteristics of the kangaroo lumbar IVDs and compare them with other animal models used in spine research.
METHODS: Twenty-five fresh-frozen cadaveric lumbar spines (T12-S1) derived from kangaroo carcases (Macropus giganteus) of undetermined age were first scanned in a C-Arm X-ray machine. A photograph of the axial section of the disc including a calibrated metric scale

Atmospheric fluorides (gaseous and particulate) are deposited on, and absorbed by, vegetation. Ingested fluoride accumulates in calcified tissues of vertebrates, and if it is excessive, it may lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis. The prevalence, form and severity of the effects vary greatly between species. Foraging strategy can be an important determinant of fluoride exposure in herbivores, because foliar fluoride concentrations vary between plant species, for example, according to vertical and lateral position in the vegetation. We combined microhistological analysis of diet and analysis o
