Occupational exposure to magnetic fields and breast cancer among Canadian men.

Occupational magnetic field (MF) exposure has been suggested as a risk factor for breast cancer in both men and women. Due to the rarity of this disease in men, most epidemiologic studies investigating this relationship have been limited by small sample sizes. Herein, associations of several measures of occupational MF exposure with breast cancer in men were investigated using data from the population-based case-control component of the Canadian National Enhanced Cancer Surveillance System. Lifetime job histories were provided by 115 cases and 570 controls. Average MF exposure of individual jo

Measurements of heme relaxation and ligand recombination in strong magnetic fields.

Heme cooling signals and diatomic ligand recombination kinetics are measured in strong magnetic fields (up to 10 T). We examined diatomic ligand recombination to heme model compounds (NO and CO), myoglobin (NO and O(2)), and horseradish peroxidase (NO). No magnetic field induced rate changes in any of the samples were observed within the experimental detection limit. However, in the case of CO binding to heme in glycerol and O(2) binding to myoglobin, we observe a small magnetic field dependent change in the early time amplitude of the optical response that is assigned to heme cooling. One pos…

Primary somatosensory evoked magnetic fields elicited by sacral surface electrical stimulation.

To explore the brain response to sacral surface therapeutic electrical stimulation (SSTES) for the treatment of refractory urinary incontinence and frequent micturition, evoked magnetic fields were measured in six healthy males. Electrical stimuli were applied between bilateral surface electrodes over the second through fourth posterior sacral foramens with intensity just below the pain threshold. Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) for the bilateral median (MN) and posterior tibial nerves (PTN) were also measured for the comparison. Sources of the early SEF peaks were superimposed on …

Mapping of tibial nerve evoked magnetic fields over the lower spine.

Using a low-noise 49-channel dc-SQUID system spinal somatosensory evoked fields (SEF) were recorded which were generated by compound action currents evoked upon posterior tibial nerve stimulation. The SEF mapping showed the action current propagation along the sciatic nerve, lumbosacral plexus and cauda equina in parallel to simultaneously recorded electrical potentials (SEP). For a reliable intraindividual side-to-side comparison of spinal SEFs the right and left tibial nerves were stimulated in alternating order; this procedure minimizes artifactual inter-nerve SEF map differences due to eve

Modulation of somatosensory evoked magnetic fields by sensory and motor interferences.

Modulatory influences of skilled exploratory finger movements on somatosensory evoked magnetic fields evoked by median nerve stimulation were investigated in six healthy subjects using a whole head magnetometer (MEG) system. The exploratory finger movements caused major changes in the somatosensory evoked fields. The most prominent effect was a reversal of the dipolar magnetic field around 30 ms after median nerve stimulation. Similar but less pronounced effects were exerted by repetitive finger movements and tactile stimulation of the hand. A dipole analysis and super-imposition of resulting …

Magnetic fields and pineal function in humans: evaluation of nocturnal acute exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields on serum melatonin and urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin circadian rhythms.

Exposure to a 50/60-Hz electromagnetic field can decrease the nocturnal production of melatonin in rodents. Melatonin is considered to be a marker of circadian rhythms, and abnormalities in its secretion are associated with clinical disorders, including fatigue, sleep disruption, mood swings, impaired performance, and depression, which are consequences of desynchronisation. Interestingly, some epidemiological studies have been reported finding most of these clinical disorders in individuals living or working in an environment exposed to electromagnetic fields. This experiment was designed to l…

Modeling of planar germanium hole qubits in electric and magnetic fields.

BACKGROUND: Melatonin exerts complex physiological and pharmacological effects on multiple systems and organs. We hypothesized that melatonin might abate ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in the liver by inhibiting excessive oxidative stress and keeping nitric oxide (NO) from being scavenged by free radicals. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether melatonin protects the liver from I/R injury and, if so, by what underlying mechanism. METHODS: Under anesthesia, Wistar rats were intraperitoneally injected with 20 mg/kg melatonin (dissolved in physiological saline containing 4% e

Assessment of Twin Fetal Exposure to Environmental Magnetic and Electromagnetic Fields.

Fetal development is vital in the human lifespan. Therefore, it is essential to characterize exposure by a series of typical environmental magnetic and electromagnetic fields. In particular, there has recently been a sharp increase in the twin birth rate. However, lack of appropriate models has prohibited dosimetric evaluation, restricting characterization of the impact of these environmental factors on twins. The present study developed two whole-body pregnant models of 31 and 32 weeks of gestation with twin fetuses and explored several typical exposure scenarios, including 50-Hz uniform magn…

Exposure to MRI-related magnetic fields and vertigo in MRI workers.

OBJECTIVES: Vertigo has been reported by people working around magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners and was found to increase with increasing strength of scanner magnets. This suggests an association with exposure to static magnetic fields (SMF) and/or motion-induced time-varying magnetic fields (TVMF). This study assessed the association between various metrics of shift-long exposure to SMF and TVMF and self-reported vertigo among MRI workers. METHODS: We analysed 358 shifts from 234 employees at 14 MRI facilities in the Netherlands. Participants used logbooks to report vertigo experien…

Occupational exposure of UK adults to extremely low frequency magnetic fields.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields (MF) in the UK general population is poorly documented. AIMS: To assess levels of occupational exposure to ELF MF in the UK and evaluate the use of a rigid job-exposure matrix (JEM) to assign exposures to subjects in the UK Adult Brain Tumour Study (UKABTS). METHODS: Personal ELF MF measurements were carried out. Exposure traces were divided into occupational, travel and elsewhere periods, under differing exposure metrics. Exposure was classified by Standard Occupational Classification (2000), Standard Industr…

Developmental toxicity evaluation of ELF magnetic fields in Sprague-Dawley rats.

To identify possible effects of horizontally polarized magnetic field (MF) exposure on maintenance of pregnancy and embryo-fetal development, an MF exposure system was designed and constructed and 96 time-mated female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (24/group) received continuous exposure to 60 Hz MF at field strengths of 0 (sham control) and 5, 83.3, or 500 microT (50, 833, or 5000 mG). Dams received MF or sham exposures for 22 h/day on gestational day 6-20. MF was monitored continuously throughout the study. There were no evidences of maternal toxicity or developmental toxicity in any MF exposed gr

Fetal loss in mice exposed to magnetic fields during early pregnancy.

The effects of low-frequency magnetic fields (MFs) on early pregnancy were studied in CBA/S mice. The magnetic field was a 20 kHz, 15 microT sawtooth. Pregnant females were divided into four groups, two control groups and two exposed groups. One group was exposed to MFs continuously from day 1 postconception (pc) until day 5.5 pc, and the other group was exposed continuously until day 7 pc. All animals were sacrificed on day 19 pc, the day before partus, and their uterine contents were analyzed. No significant increase in the resorption (early fetal death) rate was found in the exposed animals…

Pineal sensitivity to pulsed static magnetic fields changes during the photoperiod.

The effect of pulsed static magnetic fields on the rat pineal melatonin synthesis was studied at different times of the photoperiod. Exposure to magnetic fields during mid- or late dark phase significantly suppressed pineal N-acetyltransferase activity, the rate-limiting enzyme in melatonin synthesis, as well as the melatonin content in the pineal gland. These parameters were not influenced by magnetic fields when the exposure occurred early in the dark phase or during the day. These results suggest that the responsiveness of the pineal gland to magnetic field perturbations changes throughout …

Influence of power frequency electric and magnetic fields on human health.

Several reports have appeared in the last ten years in which the authors suggest an association between cancer/leukemia and exposure to electric and magnetic fields in the workplace or in the vicinity of distribution lines from overhead transmission systems. Several of these reports are reviewed and critiqued. The reports of clinical effects of electric and/or magnetic fields among human populations present serious difficulties which stem from the many publications in which pertinent material is not presented, and the data are variable or internally inconsistent. The reports presented so far a…

Railway Actuator Made of Magnetic Elastomers and Driven by a Magnetic Field.

We fabricated a mono-link using bimodal magnetic elastomers that demonstrate drastic changes in the elastic modulus by magnetic fields. The magnetic elastomer is bimodal consisting of large magnetic particles and nonmagnetic fine particles. The storage modulus for bimodal magnetic elastomers was altered from 2.2 × 10⁵ to 1.7 × 10⁶ Pa by a magnetic field of 500 mT. Compression tests up to a strain of 20% also revealed that the on-field stress for the bimodal magnetic elastomer was 1.24 times higher than the off-field stress. The bimodal magnetic elastomer was synthesized for the mono-link and w…

Magnetic resonance imaging of hematomas in a 0.02 T magnetic field.

One intramuscular calf hematoma, 2 ankle hematomas and 4 cephalhematomas were imaged at various ages in a low magnetic field (0.02 T). At least one spin echo (SE) multislice image and a series of inversion recovery images (IR) were made varying the inversion time for estimation of the relaxation time T1. T1 tended to shorten and T2 to stay unchanged. With an unsuitable pulse sequence the hematomas were not visible. They were best seen with short TIs. The images of one of the ankle hematomas and the calf hematoma were compared with sonographic findings. The appearances of the hematomas varied d
