Additive manufacturing of lower-limb prosthetic sockets: a scoping review with a focus on multi-material approaches.

PURPOSE: Additive manufacturing (AM) is increasingly applied to lower-limb prosthetic sockets, offering faster production, lower cost, and improved customisation. Multi-material additive manufacturing (MMAM) enables rigid and flexible regions to be combined in a single socket, potentially improving load distribution and user comfort. However, research on MMAM remains limited and is distributed across engineering, biomechanical, and clinical disciplines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, Web of Sc

Material-architecture-manufacture integrated strategy for piezoelectric metamaterials with mechanical protection and self-powered sensing.

The increasingly complex tasks of intelligent equipment have shifted the demand for structural materials from mere lightweight protection to multifunction integration, i.e., high recoverable energy absorption and accurate monitoring. Herein, we presented a material-architecture-manufacture integrated strategy for piezoelectric metamaterials to simultaneously achieve mechanical protection and self-powered sensing. Specifically, an intercalation heterostructure of silane-modified barium titanate (K-BTO)/MXene was constructed to improve the interfacial polarization effect, and an innovative elect

Effects of Build Orientation on Mode III Fracture Load of Additively Manufactured Polylactic Acid Material.

This study investigates the mode III fracture behavior of polylactic acid (PLA) fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) through both experimental testing and numerical simulation. While AM is widely used in structural applications, research on mode III fracture behavior remains limited, particularly regarding the influence of build orientation on shear-driven failure. In this study, transverse shear cracked plate specimens were fabricated using fused filament fabrication (FFF) in three build orientations: horizontal, lateral, and vertical. These specimens were tested under mode III loading u

Mesh Ti6Al4V Material Manufactured by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) as a Promising Intervertebral Fusion Cage.

Intervertebral cages made of Ti6Al4V alloy show excellent osteoconductivity, but also higher stiffness, compared to commonly used polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) materials, that may lead to a stress-shielding effect and implant subsidence. In this study, a metallic intervertebral fusion cage, with improved mechanical behavior, was manufactured by the introduction of a three-dimensional (3D) mesh structure to Ti6Al4V material, using an additive manufacturing method. Then, the mechanical and biological properties of the following were compared: (1) PEEK, with a solid structure, (2) 3D-printed Ti6A

Bioinspired additive manufacturing material optimization for increased stiffness and improved strain sensing in robotic limbs.

Robots traversing uneven terrain may require precise calculation of limb kinematics (e.g. foot position from joint angles and segment dimensions) and sensing of force for adaptive walking control. To facilitate these calculations, robots often have very rigid limb segments with a stiff load cell between the limb and end effector (e.g. foot). Insects also must compute kinematics and measure force when walking, but sense forces quite differently, using strain sensors embedded in their exoskeletons distributed across their legs to infer force. Due to this configuration, more rigid leg segments wo

Materials, design, manufacturing, and regulatory status of alloplastic temporomandibular joint prostheses: insights from Brazil.

End-stage temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are commonly managed with alloplastic joint replacement prostheses (TMJR). However, concerns about the quality of TMJR materials, their design, and manufacturing persist in the literature. A large variety of TMJR systems are available in Brazil; however only two, Zimmer/Biomet and Stryker/TMJ Concepts, are supported by long-term safety and effectiveness studies. Despite the lack of such studies, various TMJR devices are registered with Anvisa, the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency, and are clinically available. This study identified 11 TMJR sy

A Special Ancient Bronze Sword and Its Possible Manufacturing Technique from Materials Science Analysis.

In this study, it was found that an ancient bronze sword had special microstructures, i.e., a tin (Sn)-rich layer (Sn: 38.51 wt.%), that was around 0.1-0.3 mm in thickness in the bronze substrate (Sn: 18.57 wt.%). This sword was unearthed from the same Chu tombs of the "Sword of Gou Jian", and dated back to the late Spring and Autumn Period (496 BC-464 BC). The experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that (1) the Sn-rich layer exhibited higher microhardness (around 650 HV) than the sword body (around 300 HV); (2) the Sn-rich layer showed a brittle fracture due to the formation of a larg

Assessment of environmental and health impacts during 3D printing of candidate polymeric materials for space additive manufacturing.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and thermoplastic polyimide (PI) are candidate materials for space additive manufacturing. However, 3D printing with them in space station cabin will release particles and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), posing potential environmental and health impacts. This work characterized particles and NMHCs emissions in a simulated Teflon box. Both nano-sized and micro-sized particles, generated from the condensation and aggregation of gaseous degradation compounds with low volatility from filaments were observed. The major particle-bound compounds were hydroquinone and 4

Additive Manufacturing for Bioinspired Structures: Experimental Study to Improve the Multimaterial Adhesion Between Soft and Stiff Materials.

The fabrication of bioinspired structures has recently gained an increasing popularity: mimicking the way in which nature develops structures is a vital prerequisite in soft robotics to achieve multiple benefits. Stiff structures connected by soft joints (recalling, for instance, human bones connected by cartilage) are highly appealing: several prototypes have been manufactured and tested, demonstrating their full potential. In the present research, the material extrusion (MEX) additive manufacturing technology has been used to manufacture stiff-soft bioinspired structures activated by shape m

Glycerol-in-SEBS gel as a material to manufacture stable wall-less vascular phantom for ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging.

Styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) copolymer-in-mineral oil gel is an appropriate tissue-mimicking material to manufacture stable phantoms for ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. Glycerol dispersion has been proposed to further tune the acoustic properties and to incorporate hydrophilic additives into SEBS gel. However, this type of material has not been investigated to produce wall-less vascular flow phantom for these imaging modalities. In this paper, the development of a wall-less vascular phantom for ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging is reported. Mixtures of glycerol/TiO2-in-SEB
