Maternal age and birth defects: a population study.

Since more and more women in developed countries are delaying childbearing to an older age, it is important to find out whether birth defects, other than those resulting from chromosomal anomalies, are related to maternal age. We have studied all 26,859 children with birth defects of unknown aetiology identified among 576,815 consecutive livebirths in British Columbia. All these cases' records were linked with provincial birth records to allow determination of maternal age at birth. We excluded children with chromosomal anomalies and those with other birth defects of known aetiology. Only 3 of…

Geographic Age Cohort Study of Maternal Hypertensive Disorders.

BACKGROUNDS: Maternal hypertensive disorders (MHDs) remain a critical global health challenge, disproportionately impacting low-resource regions. Using GBD (Global Burden of Disease, Injury, and Risk Factor Study) 2021 data, we first analyze global MHD epidemiology from 1990 to 2021 and project trends to 2035. METHODS: Age-standardized rates and estimated annual percentage change quantified incidence, prevalence, mortality rate, and disability-adjusted life years. Trends were stratified by sociodemographic index (SDI) and geography. Decomposition analysis attributed temporal variances (1990-2

Pregnancy outcomes in very advanced maternal age women.

BACKGROUND: Advanced maternal age is associated with adverse pregnancy and delivery outcomes. Few studies have directly compared outcomes between women of advanced maternal age (35-44 years old) and women of very advanced maternal age (≥45 years old). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the differences in outcomes between women of advanced maternal age and women of very advanced maternal age. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at a large urban US medical center. Demographic and obstetrical data were collected in all patients who delivered within the study window (2012…

Outcomes of multiple gestations with advanced maternal age.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate outcomes of twin gestations with advanced maternal age (AMA). STUDY DESIGN: Historical cohort of twin gestations cared for by a maternal-fetal medicine faculty practice. Outcomes of patients with AMA (70) and non-AMA (75) were compared. AMA was defined as age > or =35. Analysis including mode of delivery, gestational age at delivery and overall complications was performed. Significance was determined using the chi-square test or the Student's t-test. RESULTS: The Cesarean rate for AMA was significantly greater compared to non-AMA (80.0% vs. 54.7%; p = 0.001). The ma…

Maternal genitourinary infection and small for gestational age.

Children who are born small for gestational age (SGA) are at increased risk of adverse neurological outcomes, and there is limited evidence … atistically significant but weak association with SGA (odds ratio = 1.08, p = 0.005). Young and old maternal age, female sex, maternal alcohol and tobacco use, preeclampsia/eclampsia, and hypertension were significantly associated with increased risk of SGA. White race, maternal education, diabetes mellitus, and more recent year of birth were associated with l …

Maternal age and temporal effects on stillbirth rates.

Stillbirth rates among single and multiple births show markedly decreasing temporal trends. In addition, several studies have demonstrated that the stillbirth rates are dependent on maternal age, in general, showing a U- or J-shaped association with maternal age. In this study, the temporal trends in and the effect of maternal age on the stillbirth rate were considered simultaneously. Our goal was to split the variation into temporal trends and maternal age effects. We applied two-dimensional analysis of variance because no linear association between maternal age and stillbirth rate can be ass…

Gastroschisis, low maternal age, and fetal morbidity outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the risk for fetal growth inhibition among gastroschisis-afflicted fetuses is heightened among younger gravidas ( … ved with respect to very low birth weight, pre-term and small for gestational age. CONCLUSION: Low maternal age appears to be a risk factor for low birth weight and very preterm birth among gastroschisis-affected fetuses. This information is potentially useful for planning by care providers and in counseling affected parents.

[Maternal age and chromosomal abnormalities in human oocytes].

Maternal ageing is the only etiological factor unequivocally associated with the occurrence of aneuploid conceptuses. Molecular studies of trisomies have demonstrated that the pattern of recombinaison was an important predisposing factor to meiotic nondisjunction. To complete this data, a large chromosomal study has been undertaken on 1,397 unfertilised human oocytes recovered from women participating in in vitro fertilization programmes. Conventional whole chromosome nondisjunction and premature chromatid separation were the major types of numerical abnormalities observed. A positive relation…

Maternal age as a risk factor for hypospadias.

PURPOSE: Hypospadias incidence rates have been widely reported to be increasing. During the last 20 years there has been a significant increase in the number of women who delay childbearing until their mid 30s. Therefore, it was of interest to determine if increasing maternal age is an independent risk factor for hypospadias. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the New York State Department of Health and California Birth Defects Monitoring Program were analyzed from 1983 to 1996 by maternal age groups of less than 20, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, and 35 or greater years. A Poisson model was fit…

Polyploidies in abortion material decrease with maternal age.

Among 639 spontaneous abortions between the 8th and 14th week of gestation 342 (53.5%) revealed an abnormal karyotype. While the rate of trisomies distinctly increased with advancing maternal age, a decrease in the rate of 45,X conceptuses and polyploidies was observed among abortions from older women. The overall relation of XXXX:XXYY among the tetraploidies was 14:11 and that of XXX:XXY:XYY among the triploidies was 26:36:1. However, when the latter was related to maternal age, a reversal of the XXX:XXY ratio of 1:2 in the younger to 2:1 in the older age groups became evident. Furthermore a …

Neonatal outcome and its relationship with maternal age.

The relationship between maternal age and neonatal outcome was examined in 22,689 pregnancies using various determinants of neonatal well-being which included evidence of fetal distress, birth-weight, Apgar scores, the necessity for admission to the neonatal unit and other indicators of neonatal morbidity. Differences in the incidence of congenital malformations and perinatal mortality were also studied. There was a trend towards more frequent fetal heart monitoring, lower birth-weight and a higher rate of neonatal unit admission for infants delivered by younger women. There was also a signifi…

The Association between Advanced Maternal Age and Diagnosis of Small for Gestational Age.

OBJECTIVES: To identify whether advanced maternal age (AMA), defined as age ≥35 years old, is independently associated with small for gestational age (SGA). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort of births from the National Vital Statistics System in the United States from 2009 to 2013. Women were categorized based on four age groups at the time of delivery: 20 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, and ≥40 years old. The primary outcome of SGA < 10th and SGA < 5th percentiles was compared between the four groups using both univariable and multivariable analyses to determine whether maternal age w…

Advanced maternal age at first delivery and long-term maternal risk for endocrine morbidity.

PURPOSE: The incidence of women giving birth at advanced maternal age is increasing. Literature regarding the long-term implications of delivery at advanced maternal age is limited. This study aimed to investigate whether advanced maternal age at first delivery correlates with elevated long-term risk of endocrine morbidities. METHODS: This retrospective population-based study included women who gave birth between 1991 and 2021. Participants were categorized by age at first delivery: < 30, 30-35, 35-40, and > 40 years. Women with pre-existing endocrine disorders before pregnancy were excluded.…
