Improvements in mother-child health indicators in Turkey.

Turkey has a young population as a result of high fertility and growth rates in the recent past. Thirty-five percent of the population is less than 15 years of age, and 25 percent of the population comprises reproductive-age woman. The latest estimate of the population growth rate was 19 per thousand for the 1990-1995 period. In recent decades dramatic declines in fertility rates have been noted. In the early 1970s, the overall fertility rate was approximately five children per woman, declining to 2.7 in 1993. The crude birth rate is currently estimated to be approximately 23 per thousand. The

[Impact of parenting behavior relevant to infant's sleep on maternal sleep and health].

BACKGROUND: Maternal health is affected by infant's sleep problems like night awakening or bedtime difficulties. Previous studies indicated that infant's sleep problems are affected by particular parenting behaviour (hereinafter referred to as parenting). However, the relation between maternal sleep and infant's sleep has been unclear and there is only limited information on the interaction between parenting, infant's sleep, maternal sleep, and maternal health. The purpose of this study was: 1. to examine the relationship between infant's sleep problems and maternal sleep and health; and 2. to

Fetal dystocia.

Fetal dystocia is the result of an unfortunate relationship between fetal anatomy and maternal pelvic capacity. Most commonly, arrest of labor progress occurs at a point at which the problem is solved without significant risk to maternal-fetal welfare by abdominal delivery. This article has, in part, focused upon some rare exceptions and on how to anticipate and deal with them as well as possible.

Increasing access to safe menstrual regulation services in Bangladesh by offering medical menstrual regulation.

In spite of wide availability of menstrual regulation services, women often resort to a variety of medicines for inducing abortion. The Bangladeshi Government is now supporting attempts to investigate the introduction of medical menstrual regulation in the public sector. This study examined the acceptability of medical menstrual regulation in public sector urban-based clinics, public sector rural-based clinics and urban-based clinics run by Marie Stopes, a non-governmental organization. Of the 2,976 women who attended for menstrual regulation services during the eight-month study period, 68% a

The costs of public services for teenage mothers post-welfare reform: a ten-state study.

BACKGROUND: More information is needed on the use and costs of public services by teens after the passage of major national polices in the 1990s. Both the 1996 welfare reform and later changes to the Medicaid program have affected the access of low-income adolescents to public assistance programs. In turn, these changes have affected teenaged mothers and their infants and the costs that taxpayers incur in the 50 states. STUDY QUESTION: What public services do teenage mothers use and what are their costs in the decade after the major policy changes to public assistance programs? How do pattern

Can maternal serum soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 to placental growth factor levels at term anticipate adverse pregnancy outcomes?

AIM: To evaluate if maternal serum soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1(sFlt-1) to placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio levels at term can anticipate the following adverse pregnancy outcomes: small for gestational age neonates; operative delivery for suspected fetal welfare compromise; and neonatal compromise. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a single hospital database containing antenatal soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 to placental growth factor (sFlt-1/PlGF) ratio results together with associated demographic, clinical and investigative information. Subjects with antenatal sFlt-1/PlGF

3.6 million neonatal deaths--what is progressing and what is not?

Each year 3.6 million infants are estimated to die in the first 4 weeks of life (neonatal period)--but the majority continue to die at home, uncounted. This article reviews progress for newborn health globally, with a focus on the countries in which most deaths occur--what data do we have to guide accelerated efforts? All regions are advancing, but the level of decrease in neonatal mortality differs by region, country, and within countries. Progress also differs by the main causes of neonatal death. Three major causes of neonatal deaths (infections, complications of preterm birth, and intrapar

Indicators for availability, utilization, and quality of emergency obstetric care in Ethiopia, 2008.

OBJECTIVE: To report on the availability and quality of emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) in Ethiopia. METHODS: All licensed hospitals and health centers were visited and standard questionnaires were administered. In addition, a nonrandom systematic sample was taken of recent cesarean deliveries, partographs, and maternal deaths-and these cases were systematically reviewed. Health facilities were geocoded using geographic positioning system devices. RESULTS: Too few facilities provided EmONC to meet the UN standards of 5 per 500,000 population, both nationally and in all but 2 reg

Delivering services and influencing policy: health care professionals join forces to improve maternal, newborn, and child health.

This article reviews the major activities of health care professional organizations (HCPAs), and emphasizes the role they can play in advocating for women and children and influencing maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) programs and policies. The ICM/FIGO joint effort to prevent postpartum hemorrhage and the 40-year partnership between the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Indian Health Service (IHS) are highlighted as examples of how and why HCPAs should assume a leadership role in advocacy work. The action-oriented multicountry HCPA workshops organized by the Partnership fo

The impact of bacterial and viral diseases on dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) welfare: a comprehensive review.

Dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) are vital to food security, livelihoods and cultural identity in arid and semi-arid regions of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, with global populations exceeding 35-40 million and continuing to rise as climate change favors livestock adapted to harsh environments. Despite their expanding roles in meat and milk production, transport, tourism and racing, camel health and welfare remain comparatively underexplored, particularly regarding infectious diseases. This review synthesizes current knowledge on major bacterial infections, including brucellosis

Childbirth in Early Swedish Television: From Promotion to Criticism of the Welfare State.

This article explores the shifting and competing ways in which childbirth, obstetrics, and maternity care were represented during the first two decades of television in Sweden. While childbirth on screen has a much longer history in both educational film and commercial cinema, the introduction of public service television in the late 1950s created a new space in Sweden for both educational and critical representations of reproduction, which had the potential of reaching a much larger national audience than was previously possible. Analyzing various television formats dealing with and displayin

Near miss maternal morbidity.

Audit of severe maternal morbidity is a potent tool in determining standards of maternity care. This study determines the incidence of severe acute maternal morbidity in our population, identifies the underlying organ dysfunction and associated obstetric risk factors, and compares them to published international reports. Over a 5 year period, 1999-2003, data were collected prospectively from patients with severe acute maternal morbidity. There were 36,802 women who delivered infants weighing more than 500 g over the 5 years with 53 cases of severe maternal morbidity. There were two indirect ma
