One tamed at a time: A new approach for controlling continuous magnitudes in numerical comparison tasks.

Non-symbolic stimuli (i.e., dot arrays) are commonly used to study numerical cognition. However, in addition to numerosity, non-symbolic stimuli entail continuous magnitudes (e.g., total surface area, convex-hull, etc.) that correlate with numerosity. Several methods for controlling for continuous magnitudes have been suggested, all with the same underlying rationale: disassociating numerosity from continuous magnitudes. However, the different continuous magnitudes do not fully correlate; therefore, it is impossible to disassociate them completely from numerosity. Moreover, relying on a specif

The role of immunity and seasonality in cholera epidemics.

This paper presents a mathematical model for cholera epidemics which comprises seasonality, loss of host immunity, and control mechanisms acting to reduce cholera transmission. A collection of data related to cholera disease allows us to show that outbreaks in endemic areas are subject to a resonant behavior, since the intrinsic oscillation period of the disease (∼1 year) is synchronized with the annual contact rate variation. Moreover, we argue that the short period of the host immunity may be associated to secondary peaks of incidence observed in some regions (a bimodal pattern). Finally, we

Planar chemical reaction systems with algebraic and non-algebraic limit cycles.

The Hilbert number H(n) is defined as the maximum number of limit cycles of a planar autonomous system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with right-hand sides containing polynomials of degree at most n ∈ N . The dynamics of chemical reaction systems with two chemical species can be (under mass-action kinetics) described by such planar autonomous ODEs, where n is equal to the maximum order of the chemical reactions in the system. Analogues of the Hilbert number H(n) for three different classes of chemical reaction systems are investigated: (i) chemical systems with reactions up to the

Ordinal processing differences between children with persistent dyscalculia and typically performing children.

Ordinal number processing skills are important for adults and children. Recent work demonstrates that children have difficulty with judging the ordinality of sequences that are in-order but do not match the typical count-list (i.e., in-order non-adjacent sequences, such as 2-4-6). Limited evidence in the literature suggests that dyscalculic children show a similar pattern of behavior. In the present study, we sought to explicitly test the hypothesis that children with developmental dyscalculia struggle primarily with extending notions of ordinality to sequences outside of the count-list. We te

Efficient search for informational cores in complex systems: Application to brain networks.

An important step in understanding the nature of the brain is to identify "cores" in the brain network, where brain areas strongly interact with each other. Cores can be considered as essential sub-networks for brain functions. In the last few decades, an information-theoretic approach to identifying cores has been developed. In this approach, interactions between parts are measured by an information loss function, which quantifies how much information would be lost if interactions between parts were removed. Then, a core called a "complex" is defined as a subsystem wherein the amount of infor

Developmental Dyscalculia in Adults: Beyond Numerical Magnitude Impairment.

Numerous studies have tried to identify the core deficit of developmental dyscalculia (DD), mainly by assessing a possible deficit of the mental representation of numerical magnitude. Research in healthy adults has shown that numerosity, duration, and space share a partly common system of magnitude processing and representation. However, in DD, numerosity processing has until now received much more attention than the processing of other non-numerical magnitudes. To assess whether or not the processing of non-numerical magnitudes is impaired in DD, the performance of 15 adults with DD and 15 co

Time to change the classical vision of coagulation in liver disease: from the balance disequilibrium to systems biology network modeling.

The longstanding dogma that patients with liver disease have a hemostasis related bleeding tendency is neglected from the last 10 years however, despite this tremendous change of paradigm no longer progress had been made in this field. A mathematical model is a description of a system using mathematical concepts and language. Mathematical models are able to analyze large amount of data and they can make predictions about behavior. Mathematical models are used in the social sciences, engineering as well as in medicine. Blood coagulation in patients with liver disease is difficult to predict due

Learning disabilities: Developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a developmental learning disability that manifests as a persistent difficulty in comprehending even the most basic numeric and arithmetic concepts, despite normal intelligence and schooling opportunities. Given the predominant use of numbers in modern society, this condition can pose major challenges in the sufferer's everyday life, both in personal and professional development. Since, to date, we still lack a universally recognized and psychometrically driven definition of DD, its diagnosis has been applied to a wide variety of cognitive profiles. In this cha

Examining associations between foundational and complex mathematics skills in people with Down syndrome and typically developing children.

Acquiring mathematical competence is essential to independent living. In this study, we investigated the mathematics profile in young people with Down syndrome (DS), and the relations between foundational and more complex mathematics skills. The final sample included 33 participants with DS (58% male, 10.2-31.9 years) and a typically developing (TD) group matched on non-verbal mental age (N = 33, 58% male, 4.5-6.5 years). Participants completed mathematics tasks assessing symbolic number, non-symbolic number, arithmetic, reasoning and geometry. We found that performance was similar on measures

The componential nature of school mathematics and associative cognitive factors: The case of young children with mathematical learning disabilities.

The current understanding of mathematical and numerical processes indicates that mathematical abilities are not singular. Instead, they consist of multiple components that can be linked to various domain-general abilities. We used network analysis to test the componential nature of school mathematics and the effect of mathematical proficiency on the relations between mathematical tasks. Two groups of typically developing children (TD, N = 64, 40 females, mean age = 9.87) and children with mathematical learning disabilities (MD, N = 64, 47 females, mean age = 9.87) were tested. Most of the math

A two-wave longitudinal study of geometry self-efficacy and problem-posing in pre-service mathematics teachers.

Understanding how geometry self-efficacy and problem-posing self-efficacy are related over time is important for informing teacher education programs. While cross-sectional studies have examined these constructs primarily at a single time point, their longitudinal interplay remains underexplored. This study examined the longitudinal and cross-lagged associations between geometry self-efficacy and problem-posing self-efficacy among pre-service mathematics teachers. Using a two-wave cross-lagged panel design, data were collected in October 2021 and May 2025, with final analyses based on a matche

Number words recruit numerosity-related cortex in 3- to 5-year-old children.

Learning to map number words onto their ordinal and quantitative meanings is critical in the acquisition of formal mathematics. Previous neuroimaging work in adults suggests that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) represents verbal, symbolic number (i.e., number words) as well as non-verbal, non-symbolic numerosity (i.e., number of items in an array), but it is unclear when this overlap emerges in development. If regions that represent number words rely on representations of numerosity, then there should be functional overlap between number word and numerosity representations in the brain, even in

Operation-specific ERP dynamics of arithmetic processing in children with developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is associated with persistent arithmetic difficulties, but the temporal dynamics of operation-specific arithmetic processing remain unclear. This study examined operation-locked event-related potentials (ERPs) during addition, subtraction, and multiplication in 76 children aged 8-12 years, including 37 children with DD and 39 typically developing (TD) controls. ERPs were time-locked to the onset of the second operand, when the complete arithmetic expression became available. Children with DD showed lower accuracy and longer reaction times across all operations. E

The development of number line estimation in children at risk of mathematics learning difficulties: A longitudinal study.

Children with mathematics learning difficulties (MLD) show poorer performance on the number line task, but how performance on this task relates to other mathematical skills is unclear. This study examined the association between performance on the number line task and mathematical skills during the first 2 years of school for children at risk of MLD. Children (N = 100; Mage = 83.63 months) were assessed on four occasions on the number line task and other mathematical skills (math fluency, numerical operations, and mathematical reasoning). Estimation patterns were analyzed based on the represen

Concurrent and predictive associations between executive function and numerical skills in early childhood.

The importance of early numerical and executive function (EF) skills is well-established, with each skill set positively and specifically predicting later mathematics achievement, income, postsecondary education, and more. Less is known, however, about the relations between EF and numerical skills. Therefore, we examined the concurrent and predictive relations between EF and numerical skills in preschoolers to third graders (N = 205; 4.67-8.75 years of age; 43.9% female; 51.2% White non-Hispanic, 18% multiracial, 6.3% Hispanic, 12.2% Black, 2% American Indian/Alaska Native, 4.9% Asian, 1% not

Mathematical skills in 3- and 5-year-olds with spina bifida and their typically developing peers: a longitudinal approach.

Preschoolers with spina bifida (SB) were compared to typically developing (TD) children on tasks tapping mathematical knowledge at 36 months (n = 102) and 60 months of age (n = 98). The group with SB had difficulty compared to TD peers on all mathematical tasks except for transformation on quantities in the subitizable range. At 36 months, vocabulary knowledge, visual-spatial, and fine motor abilities predicted achievement on a measure of informal math knowledge in both groups. At 60 months of age, phonological awareness, visual-spatial ability, and fine motor skill were uniquely and different

Stability of periodic solution for a free boundary problem modeling small plaques.

Mathematical models describing the growth of plaque in the arteries (e.g., Friedman and Hao (2015), Friedman et al. (2015), Hao and Friedman (2014), McKay et al. (2005) and Mukherjee et al. (2019)) were introduced. All of these models include the interaction of the "bad" cholesterols, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and the "good" cholesterols, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), in triggering whether plaque will grow or shrink. Because the blood vessels tend to be circular, 2D cross-section model is a good approximation, and the 2D models are studied in Friedman et al. (2015), Zhang et al. (2023)

Dynamics of a Mosquito Egg-Larvae Model with Seasonality.

We propose a two stages mosquito egg-larvae model with seasonality as a simplification of a four stages one. For the simplified model we characterize the dynamics in terms of the vectorial reproduction number, [Formula: see text], obtaining extinction if [Formula: see text] and convergence to a unique positive periodic orbit if [Formula: see text]. We illustrate each case with an example, by providing general conditions on the periodic coefficients for its occurrence. These examples are further developed using numerical simulations where the periodic parameters satisfy the conditions obtained.

Modeling Syphilis and HIV Coinfection: A Case Study in the USA.

Syphilis and HIV infections form a dangerous combination. In this paper, we propose an epidemic model of HIV-syphilis coinfection. The model always has a unique disease-free equilibrium, which is stable when both reproduction numbers of syphilis and HIV are less than 1. If the reproduction number of syphilis (HIV) is greater than 1, there exists a unique boundary equilibrium of syphilis (HIV), which is locally stable if the invasion number of HIV (syphilis) is less than 1. Coexistence equilibrium exists and is stable when all reproduction numbers and invasion numbers are greater than 1. Using
