Successes and Challenges of HIV Mentoring in Malawi: The Mentee Perspective.

HIV clinical mentoring has been utilized for capacity building in Africa, but few formal program evaluations have explored mentee perspectives on these programs. EQUIP is a PEPFAR-USAID funded program in Malawi that has been providing HIV mentoring on clinical and health systems since 2010. We sought to understand the successes and challenges of EQUIP's mentorship program. From June-September 2014 we performed semi-structured, in-depth interviews with EQUIP mentees who had received mentoring for ≥ 1 year. Interview questions focused on program successes and challenges and were performed in Eng…

Gastrointestinal Manifestations of Common Variable Immunodeficiency: A Mentored Review.

BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is an umbrella term for numerous primary immunodeficiency syndromes characterized by B-cell, and sometimes T-cell, impairment. While CVID is commonly associated with recurrent sinopulmonary infections, gastrointestinal (GI) disease-often presenting atypically due to immune dysregulation-can significantly the increase morbidity and mortality of those affected. OBJECTIVES: This review summarizes the diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, and GI manifestations of CVID to increase awareness among general practitioners and gastroenterologists. This r

Passion and ability: Mentoring in a Doctorate of Nursing Practice programme.

This basic qualitative study sought to understand the experiences of Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) graduates with mentorship during their DNP project completion. Fourteen participants were recruited for telephonic, semi-structured interviews. Accessibility and availability of the mentor represents the dominant theme. Additional themes represented aspects of the mentor role related to the work involved in executing the project and the mentor's personal and professional attributes that promoted the professional socialisation of the graduates to the DNP role.

A mentored cooperative group pilot study: atrophic vaginitis.

OBJECTIVES: To review nursing research initiatives from two cooperative groups and outline a pilot study performed by a junior nurse researcher mentored by cooperative group nurse researchers and institutional physicians. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, World Wide Web. CONCLUSION: Nursing research can be initiated and led by nurses in the cooperative group setting. The team approach model of research includes several disciplines to examine multiple facets of the same problem, or of multiple problems that a cancer patient may face. This new model will enable a greater number o

Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery: a mentoring surgical model.

BACKGROUND: We report the experience of endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (EETS) for resection of pituitary region tumours at Wellington, the central regional referral centre for neurosurgery in New Zealand, and discuss the collaborative mentoring surgical model that enhanced the learning experience. METHOD: Between January 2007 and June 2009, a total of 47 operations on 46 patients were performed and reviewed retrospectively. All patients had perioperative clinical assessment, hormonal profile and magnetic resonance imaging studies for residual/recurrent disease. The collaborative

Lessons learned from a mentoring program for teenage mothers.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated a mentoring program designed to decrease the risk of repeat pregnancy among unmarried primiparous teens, ages 12-19. METHODS: Adolescents (n = 110) completed a battery that assessed sexual/contraceptive behavior; psychological adjustment; and attitudes towards school. Teens were then randomly assigned to a mentor or control group, and reassessed at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Mentored teens received social support and assistance dealing with community agencies from mentors who were trained community volunteers. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: At baseline, mentor and cont…

Homeless Veterans' Use of Peer Mentors and Effects on Costs and Utilization in VA Clinics.

OBJECTIVES: The study compared health care utilization and costs among homeless veterans randomly assigned to peer mentors or usual care and described contacts with peer mentors. METHODS: Homeless patients at four Department of Veterans Affairs clinics were randomly assigned to a peer mentor (N=195) or to usual care (N=180). Administrative data on utilization and costs over a six-month follow-up were combined with peer mentors' reports of patient contacts. RESULTS: Most patients (87%) in the peer mentor group had at least one peer contact. Patients in this group spent the largest proportions…

Using career nurse mentors to support minority nursing students and facilitate their transition to practice.

The Clinical Leadership Collaborative for Diversity in Nursing was developed through an academe-service partnership focused on supporting minority nursing students and facilitating transition to practice. A key program element is mentoring. Students are paired with an experienced, minority clinical nurse or nurse leader from one of the partnering agencies, who helps guide the student throughout the junior and senior year of school and first year of employment. The mentoring component was evaluated through surveys in which mentors and mentees rated one another and offered open-ended comments on…

Academic partnerships with clinical nurse scientist mentors improve the Doctor of Nursing Practice student experience.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree has become firmly established as the terminal practice degree for advanced practice registered nurses in the United States. A defining component of the DNP curriculum requires students to implement a scholarly project that addresses a clinical problem and improves patient or system outcomes. This article describes the development and implementation of a structured clinical-academic partnership between a university-based DNP nurse anesthesia program and a pediatric health care organization in the southeastern United States. Central to this collaborati

Interprofessional Collaboration and Peer Mentors for Bowel Education in Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Consultation.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that having a bowel management program prevents rehospitalization postacute rehabilitation discharge for persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Peer mentors have been used to assist patients in managing their care. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to illustrate how interprofessional collaboration led to utilizing resources of the inpatient rehabilitation facility's peer mentor program and incorporating peer mentors into bowel education for persons with SCI. METHODS: A descriptive case review of a continuous quality improvement (CQI) project, using an eight-item …

A scalable dissemination model for training faculty in mentor development and networking.

Faculty success in academia depends on effective mentoring and developmental networks, yet shortages in trained mentors, limited networking skills and inconsistent mentoring quality impact career advancement. While structured mentor development programs improve mentor competency and curriculum-based training improves networking self-efficacy, these programs are widely unavailable and/or underutilized. To address this gap, we evaluated scalable, evidence-based faculty training programs disseminated to academic institutions across the United States using the Project ECHO (Extension of Community …

A feasibility study of a peer mentoring program for acquired brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired brain injury (ABI) can lead to difficulties in activities of daily living and reduced participation. Few interventions have explored the treatment impact of peer mentoring for people with ABI. This study explored the feasibility and acceptability of a peer mentoring intervention (PAIRS). METHODS: Mixed-methods feasibility study with post-intervention interviews. Feasibility was assessed regarding recruitment, retention, and intervention adherence. Acceptability was assessed through post-intervention interviews with mentors, mentees, carers, and healthcare professionals.…
