To elucidate the sources and transfer of mercury (Hg) in terrestrial food chains, particularly in heavily Hg-contaminated rice paddy ecosystems, we collected rice leaves, invertebrates, and Russet Sparrow nestlings from a clear food chain and analyzed the dietary compositions and potential Hg sources using stable Hg isotopes coupled with a Bayesian isotope mixing model (BIMM). Our findings indicated that MeHg exposure is dominant through the dietary route, with caterpillars, grasshoppers, and katydids being the main prey items, while the less provisioned spiders, dragonflies, and mantises cont

The fate of mercury (Hg) in the soil-earthworm system is still far from being fully understood, especially regarding recurrent and challenging questions about the importance of the reactivity of exogenous Hg species. Thus, to predict the potential effect of Hg inputs in terrestrial ecosystems, it is necessary to evaluate separately the reactivity of the endogenous and exogenous Hg species and, for this purpose, the use of enriched stable isotope tracers is a promising tool. In the present work, earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) were exposed to historically Hg contaminated soils from the Almadé

Elevated methylmercury (MeHg) exposure poses significant risks to bird health, behavior, and reproduction. Still, the risk of MeHg exposure to forest birds, accounting for over 80 % of the world's bird species, is poorly understood. This study combines Hg isotopes and video analysis, aiming to assess MeHg exposure risks to a forest riverine songbird, the spotted forktail (Enicurus maculatus) from a remote subtropical montane forest. Noticeably, 83 % of feather MeHg concentrations of adult forktails exceeded 5000 ng g-1, a threshold level potentially impacting bird reproduction, and 50 % of fea

Anthropogenic activities and climate change have significantly increased mercury (Hg) levels in seawater. However, the processes and sources of Hg in differing marine compartments (e.g. estuary, marine continental shelf (MCS) or pelagic area) have not been well studied, which makes it difficult to understand Hg cycling in marine ecosystems. To address this issue, the total Hg (THg) concentration, methylmercury (MeHg) concentration and stable Hg isotopes were determined in seawater and fish samples collected from differing marine compartments of the South China Sea (SCS). The results showed tha

Methylmercury (MeHg) continues to pose a significant global health risk to wildlife and humans through fish consumption. Despite numerous advancements in understanding the mercury (Hg) cycle, questions remain about MeHg sources that accumulate in fish, particularly across transitional coastal areas, where harvest is prominent and Hg sources are numerous. Here we used a unique combination of Hg and nutrient isotopes, and otolith chemistry to trace the biogeochemical history of Hg and identify Hg sources that accumulated in an economically important fish species across Mobile Bay, Alabama (USA).

In contrast to aquatic food chains, knowledge of the origins and transfer of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in terrestrial food chains is relatively limited, especially in songbirds. We collected soil, rice plants, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, small wild fish, and resident songbird feathers from an Hg-contaminated rice paddy ecosystem for an analysis of stable Hg isotopes to clarify the sources of Hg and its transfer in songbirds and their prey. Significant mass-dependent fractionation (MDF, δ202Hg), but no mass-independent fractionation (MIF, ∆199Hg) occurred in the trophic t

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and stable isotopes along with other trace metals were examined in environmental samples from Ecuador and Peru's shared Puyango-Tumbes River in order to determine the extent to which artisanal- and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Portovelo-Zaruma, Ecuador contributes to Hg pollution in the downstream aquatic ecosystem. Prior studies investigated the relationship between ASGM activities and downstream Hg pollution relying primarily on Hg concentration data. In this study, Hg isotopes revealed an isotopically heavy Hg signature with negligible mass independent fract

Terrestrial spiders transfer methyl mercury (MeHg) to terrestrial consumers such as birds, but how spiders become contaminated with MeHg is not well understood. In the present study, the authors used stable isotopes of nitrogen in combination with MeHg to determine the source of MeHg to terrestrial long-jawed orb weaver spiders (Tetragnatha sp). The authors collected spiders and a variety of other aquatic and terrestrial taxa from 10 shallow ponds in north Texas, USA. Based on MeHg concentrations and stable nitrogen isotope ratios, the authors identified distinct aquatic- and terrestrial-based

The present study aims to explore the bioaccumulation and biotic transformations of inorganic (iHg) and monomethyl mercury (MMHg) by natural pico-nanoplankton community from eutrophic lake Soppen, Switzerland. Pico-nanoplankton encompass mainly bacterioplankton, mycoplankton and phytoplankton groups with size between 0.2 and 20 μm. Species-specific enriched isotope mixture of 199iHg and 201MMHg was used to explore the accumulation, the subcellular distribution and transformations occurring in natural pico-nanoplankton sampled at 2 different depths (6.6 m and 8.3 m). Cyanobacteria, diatoms, cry

The photochemical reduction of Hg(II) is an important pathway in the environmental Hg cycle because it competes with Hg methylation and potentially limits the formation of bioaccumulative methylmercury. Hg stable isotope systematics have proven to be an effective tool for investigating the transport, transformation, and bioaccumulation of Hg. The dominant cause of mass independent isotope fractionation (MIF) of Hg in nature is the photochemical reduction of various species of Hg(II). However, it is difficult to fully interpret Hg stable isotope signatures due to the lack of mechanistic informa

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a toxic pollutant that bioaccumulates in aquatic food webs. A major mechanism that limits MMHg uptake by biota is photodemethylation in surface waters. Recently, the extent of mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of Hg isotopes preserved in fish is being used to quantify this MMHg sink. Here, the effects of different types and amounts of DOM on Hg MIF during MMHg photodemethylation were investigated to assess how variable MIF enrichment factors may be with respect to changing DOM binding sites. From experiments conducted with varying amounts of reduced organic sulfu

Under strong impacts of land-sea interactions, estuarine and coastal ecosystems exhibit large spatial variations in geochemical properties and monomethylmercury (MMHg) distribution, which may induce habitat-dependent MMHg bioaccumulation to migratory fish that remains unclear. This study investigates MMHg origins in two planktivorous migratory fish with distinct habitats (anadromous Coilia nasus and oceanodromous Scomber japonicus) in the East China Sea (ECS), based on the seasonal and inter-tissue variations of stable isotopes of MMHg (especially Δ199HgMMHg) and carbon (δ13C) in fish and site

In order to investigate trace mercury-containing proteins in maternal rat and their offspring, a method of enriched stable isotopic tracer (196Hg and 198Hg) combined with size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled to inductively coupled plasma-isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP-IDMS) was developed. Prior to the analysis, 196Hg- and 198Hg-enriched methylmercury was administrated to the pregnant rats. Then the mercury-containing proteins in serum and brain cytosol of the dam and pup rats were separated by size-exclusion columns and the mercury was detected by ICP-MS. The ICP-MS spectrogram

Methylmercury (MeHg) photodegradation can induce mass-dependent (MDF) and mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of mercury (Hg) isotopes, providing useful information for fingerprinting the transformation and transport of Hg species. However, Hg isotopic fractionation during dissolved organic matter (DOM)-mediated MeHg photodegradation remains poorly understood, constraining environmental application of this isotopic tracer. In this study, several low-molecular-weight aromatic thiols were selected to investigate the influence of DOM chemical structures on Hg isotope fractionation during MeHg ph

A combination of mercury (Hg) speciation and compound-specific stable isotope analyses was employed to trace the origin and fate of monomethylmercury (MMHg) in the high-altitude food webs of Lakes Titicaca (TTKK) and Uru Uru (UU). Significant MMHg biomagnification was observed, with concentrations reaching up to 2 μg.g-1 Hg in top predators. Hg isotopes lake-specific trends were identified in relation to trophic position (δ15N) and MMHg fractions. In particular, Δ199MMHg increased from 0 ‰ in UU epiphytic biofilm to ≈2 ‰ and ≈4 ‰ in UU and TTKK piscivorous fish, respectively. Both δ202MMHg and

We measured mercury (Hg) isotope ratios in sediments and various estuarine organisms (green crab, blue mussel, killifish, eider) to investigate methylmercury (MMHg) sources and exposure pathways in five Northeast coast (U.S.) estuaries. The mass independent Hg isotopic compositions (MIF; Δ(199)Hg) of the sediments were linearly correlated with the sediment 1/Hg concentrations (Δ(199)Hg: r(2) = 0.77, p < 0.05), but the mass dependent isotope compositions (MDF; δ(202)Hg) were not (r(2) = 0.26, p = 0.16), reflecting inputs of anthropogenic Hg sources with varying δ(202)Hg. The estuarine organisms

Methylmercury (MeHg) and total mercury (THg) in seafood were determined using species-specific isotope dilution analysis and gas chromatography combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Sample preparation methods (extraction and derivation step) were evaluated on certified reference materials using isotopically enriched Hg species. Solid-liquid extraction, derivation by propylation and automated agitation gave excellent accuracy and precision results. Satisfactory figures of merit for the selected method were obtained in terms of limit of quantification (1.2 μg Hg kg(-1) for

We investigated the abiotic reduction of inorganic Hg(II) by dissolved organic matter (DOM) and stannous(II) chloride (SnCl(2)) in the absence of light and quantified fractionation of Hg isotopes during these processes. The kinetics of reduction by DOM was characterized using multiple parallel pseudo-first-order reactions, implying different reactive Hg(II) species resulting from Hg-DOM complexation. Significant mass independent isotopic anomalies were observed in reduction by both reducing reagents. Isotopes with odd atomic masses ((199)Hg and (201)Hg) showed less enrichment in reactants Hg(I

This paper discusses some recent advances in spectrometric methods and approaches for mercury speciation analysis of environmental samples with focus on isotope dilution techniques for determination of mercury species' concentrations in gaseous samples and reaction rates in soils and sediments. Such analytical data is important inter alia in fundamental research on mercury biogeochemistry and for risk assessments of mercury-contaminated soils and sediments and for designing effective remedial actions. The paper describes how the use of enriched stable isotope tracers in mercury speciation anal

Mercury (Hg), and its organic forms, are some of the most hazardous elements, with strong toxicity, persistence, and biological accumulation in marine organisms. Hg accumulation in continuous trophic levels (TL) in marine food chains remains unclear. In this study, individual invertebrate and fish samples collected from the Yellow River Estuary adjacent sea were grouped into continuous TL ranges, and the bioaccumulations of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were analyzed. The trophic magnification factor in invertebrates and fish was 1.40 and 1.72 for THg, and 2.56 and 2.17 for MeHg, ind
