Clinical and genomic features of Listeria monocytogenes-associated mesenteric lymphadenitis in a cat.

BACKGROUND: Listeriosis is a severe foodborne infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, an important foodborne pathogen of animals and humans. Listeriosis is a rare disease in cats. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical, diagnostic imaging, histological, and microbiological features of L. monocytogenes-associated mesenteric lymphadenitis in a cat. ANIMALS: Listeria monocytogenes-associated mesenteric lymphadenitis was confirmed in a cat by histology and microbiology. RESULTS: Two distinct isolates of L. monocytogenes were cultured from the affected mesenteric lymph node and whole genome seq…

Efficacy of Prednisone in Children with Acute Nonspecific Mesenteric Lymphadenitis: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Acute nonspecific mesenteric lymphadenitis (ANML) is a common cause of acute abdominal pain in children with no specific treatment. METHODS: A total of 13 patients (6 boys, 7 girls) aged 7.3 (5-13.5) years with severe acute abdominal pain were evaluated using ultrasonography and laboratory tests to establish the diagnosis of ANML. They were treated with prednisone 1 mg/kg (max 40 mg daily) for a maximum of 5 days. The intensity of abdominal pain was evaluated before and after treatment using a numeric rating scale. RESULTS: All patients had pain scores above 6/10 before, and belo…

Mesenteric Lymphadenitis Presenting as Acute Abdomen in a Child with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may develop as a rare complication following COVID-19. MIS-C presentation varies subst … was initially surpassed unnoticed. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy that only revealed mesenteric lymphadenitis. Postoperatively, the patient met the clinical and laboratory diagnostic criteria of MIS-C. SARS-CoV-2 exposure was serologically confirmed and MIS-C treatment was commenced, resulting in defervescence and a satisfactory outcome. In young patients p …

Mesenteric Lymphadenitis and Terminal Ileitis is Associated With Yersinia Infection: A Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Yersinia infection affects terminal ileum and lymph nodes and could therefore mimic the symptoms of appendicitis. We aimed to sy … ross geographic regions, the weighted mean prevalence for Yersinia spp. was 51% (95% CI 34%-69%) in mesenteric lymphadenitis, 65% (95% CI 45%-85%) in terminal ileitis, and 8% (95% CI 2%-15%) in normal appendices. CONCLUSIONS: Around half of the patients with mesenteric lymphadenitis and terminal ileitis were serologically positive for infections with Yersinia spp. Yersin …

Mesenteric lymphadenitis as a presenting feature of Whipple's disease: Value of PCR analysis.

Whipple's disease (WD) is a rare chronic and systemic infection caused by the ubiquitous actinomycete Tropheryma whipplei. A case of localized infection with mesenteric adenopathy associated with a prolonged unexplained fever is reported herein. Screening by PCR on saliva and stool was positive, and T. whipplei was formally identified by specific PCR on duodenal and mesenteric adenopathy biopsies. Histological analysis did not demonstrate periodic acid-Schiff-positive macrophages or positive T. whipplei immunochemistry in either the duodenal mucosa or mesenteric nodes. Treatment with hydroxych

Mesenteric panniculitis associated with abdominal tuberculous lymphadenitis: a case report and review of the literature.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare disease characterized by chronic non-specific inflammation of the mesenteric adipose tissue. The specific aetiology of the disease is previously unknown. A case diagnosed as mesenteric panniculitis is presented. The cause was biopsy-proved abdominal tuberculous lymphadenitis. To our knowledge, mesenteric panniculitis associated with tuberculosis infection has not been reported previously in the literature. Thus, we would like to present the first case and describe CT features of the disease.

Comparison of Clinical and Laboratory Manifestations Between Acute Appendicitis and Mesenteric Lymphadenitis in Children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Acute appendicitis is a major cause of emergency surgery in children and adolescents. Mesenteric lymphadenitis is also one of the most common differential diagnoses in children with acute appendicitis, and despite its high prevalence, few clinical studies have examined its features. The clinical signs of mesenteric lymphadenitis in children are very similar to those of acute appendicitis. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical manifestations of acute appendicitis and mesenteric lymphadenitis in children. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, patients …

A case of mesenteric lymphadenitis with long-acting symptom, showing marked response to corticosteroid.

A 17-year-old girl who had right lower abdominal pain with multiple swelling of lymph nodes in the ileocecal region and she was admitted to a neighboring hospital. Since there was no improvement of condition with antibiotic resistance, we were consulted. Lymph node biopsy under laparoscopy demonstrated nonspecific findings. She then developed erythema nodosum, suggesting the presence of autoimmune etiology. Treatment with systemic corticosteroid resulted in symptomatic improvement. Mesenteric lymphadenitis like this case is rare.

Ectopic Enterobius Vermicularis Infestation; An Extremely Rare Cause Of Mesenteric Lymphadenopathy Mimicking Tuberculous Lymphadenitis.

Enterobius vermicularis (EV) is a pinworm which commonly resides in the lumen of the intestinal tract and lays eggs on the perianal skin. However, rarely the worm can infest various other sites in the body and cases with infestation of such ectopic sites have been reported in literature. Rare cases of mesenteric lymph node involvement have also been reported. We report a case in a young male who presented with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis. During surgery, enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes were identified. Histological examination revealed adult worm in the appendiceal lumen. Histolog

Terminal ileitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis and appendicitis due to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis type VA: case report.

A case of terminal ileitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis and appendicitis is reported. Serological studies indicated infection with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis type VA. The patient's illness ran a chronic course necessitating resection of the terminal ileum. Histological examination of the appendix and a mesenteric lymph node in the acute stage revealed granulomas with central necrosis. This is the first human case in which the subtype VA has been identified.
