A search for the photoreceptor in the photosensitive irises of normally pigmented and albino hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Hamsters are among the mammalian species whose irises are directly sensitive to light, responding with a constriction even when completely isolated from the rest of the hamster. Examination of the ultrastructure of the irises of both normally pigmented and albino hamsters disclosed a typical vertebrate iris, containing a sphincter and dilator pupillae, and anterior stromal layer, and two layers of pigment epithelial cells. No structures obviously specialized for photoreception were found. We examined the possibility that the pigment granules in the cells of the sphincter pupillae are photosens

PRSSLY-Based Molecular Sex Determination of Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) Pups Using Placental Tissues.

Molecular sex determination in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) has been limited by the incomplete annotation of Y-linked loci in currently available genome assemblies. Here, we evaluate the Y-linked gene PRSSLY, which encodes a testis-specific serine protease-like protein, as a molecular marker for genetic sexing of Syrian hamster embryonic and placental tissues. Primers flanking a conserved PRSSLY coding region produced a male-specific amplicon showing 100% concordance with results from the established KDM5C/KDM5D PCR assay in E15.5 tail biopsies. SYBR Green-based qPCR enables the accu…

Hepatic endotheliitis in Golden Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) experimentally infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Hepatic injuries in COVID-19 are not yet fully understood and indirect pathways (without viral replication in the liver) have been associated with the activation of vascular mechanisms of liver injury in humans infected with SARS-CoV-2. Golden Syrian hamsters are an effective model for experimental reproduction of moderate and self-limiting lung disease during SARS-CoV-2 infection. As observed in humans, this experimental model reproduces lesions of bronchointerstitial pneumonia and pulmonary vascular lesions, including endotheliitis (attachment of lymphoid cells to the luminal surface of endo

Hematological findings and antibody responses in Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) infected with Babesia microti.

Hematological findings during the course of infection and the antibody response in Syrian hamsters infected with Babesia microti were examined. A macrocytic hypochromic anemia with an increase of the reticulocyte count was detected as a rise in the parasitized erythrocyte rate. White blood cell counts also remarkedly increased with the increases of both neutrophils and active-shaped monocytes, and thus they particularly play an important role in eliminating the parasite. In Western blotting with the sera from the hamsters infected with B. microti, a 38 kDa protozoan antigen reacted to the earl

Mucoid dysplasia of tricuspid and congenital bicuspid aortic valves in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

A histological study was made of the aortic valves of 141 Syrian hamsters aged between 35 and 657 days, belonging to an inbred laboratory colony with a high incidence of congenital bicuspid aortic valves. A tricuspid aortic valve was found in 81 specimens, whereas the remaining 60 possessed a bicuspid aortic valve. In all bicuspid valves there were two aortic sinuses, a ventral and a dorsal, each supporting one cusp. Thirty-three (23.4%) of the 141 specimens showed mucoid dysplasia of the aortic valve. The defect was characterized by thickening of the valve cusps and disruption of the fibrosa

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection in fetal, newborn, and young adult Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

The pathogenesis of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection in fetal, newborn, and young adult hamsters was studied. Infected newborn hamsters initially developed a persistent viremia and viruria with titers often in excess of 10(4.0) mean infectious doses/0.03 ml of blood or urine. After week 12 two different patterns of infection became evident. Approximately one-half of the hamsters eventually cleared the infection, whereas the others developed a chronic progressive and ultimalely fatal disease characterized by continuous high-titered viremia and viruria and high titers of virus in the

Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) with simultaneous intestinal Giardia sp., Spironucleus sp., and trichomonad infections.

A commercial facility producing hamsters with a history of infection by dwarf tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana) submitted 15 animals for necropsy and postmortem parasitological and microscopic examination. No tapeworms were detected grossly or microscopically. Fecal examination including gastrointestinal mucosal smears demonstrated mixed intestinal bacteria and low numbers of Giardia sp. Histologic examination of small intestine demonstrated filling of the small intestinal crypts by large numbers of 7-9 µm × 3 µm, rod to crescent or teardrop-shaped flagellates consistent with Spironucleus sp. These

X-ray kinematics analysis of vaginal scent marking in female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Vaginal marking is a stereotyped scent marking behavior in female Syrian hamsters used to attract male hamsters for mating. Although the modulation of vaginal marking by hormones and odors is well understood, the motor control of this proceptive reproductive behavior remains unknown. Therefore, we used X-ray videography to visualize individual bone movements during vaginal marking. Kinematic analyses revealed several consistent motor patterns of vaginal marking. Despite exhibiting a diversity of trial-to-trial non-marking behaviors (e.g. locomotor stepping), we found that lowering and raising

Goblet cell hyperplasia induced by Strongyloides venezuelensis-infection in Syrian golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus.

The goblet cell response was examined in the jejunum of the Syrian golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, following infection with an intestinal helminth, Strongyloides venezuelensis. After subcutaneous inoculation with 3000 infective larvae (L3), the number of adult worms in the small intestine remained stable up to day 20 and then decreased. Before infection, the number of goblet cells in the jejunum was about 70/10 villi. The number of goblet cells slowly increased, though not significantly, until day 20 post-infection, and then rapidly increased with an inverse relationship to the worm burd…

Maturational loss of thermotaxis prevented by olfactory lesions in golden hamster pups (Mesocricetus auratus).

Five-day-old golden hamster pups were tested preoperatively on a thermal gradient, subjected to bilateral or unilateral olfactory bulbectomy or control dorsal cortical removal, and then tested on Days 6-15. Locomotion and rectal or belly temperature were monitored throughout the 2-min test. Control pups became quiescent in the hot end of the gradient on Days 5-7 but after Day 8 chose cooler regions and increased their activity. Both unilaterally and bilaterally bulbectomized pups spent more time in the heat throughout testing. They were also less active and allowed their temperature to rise mo

Toxicological Evaluation of Kaempferol and Linearolactone as Treatments for Amoebic Liver Abscess Development in Mesocricetus auratus.

Several studies with kaempferol (KP) and linearolactone (LL) have demonstrated their antiparasitic activity. However, the toxicity of these treatments is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the possible toxicological effects of intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of KP or LL on the amoebic liver abscess model (ALA) in Mesocricetus auratus. An ALA was induced in male hamsters with 1.5 × 105Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) trophozoites inoculated in the left hepatic lobe. The lesion evolved for 4 days, and then KP (5 mg/kg body weight/day) or LL (10 mg/kg body weight/day) wa…

Separate origin of the main components of the left coronary artery in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

This study describes a rare congenital coronary artery anomaly in the Syrian hamster; namely, the separate origin of the obtuse marginal and left circumflex arteries which are the main components of the left coronary artery. The hearts of nine affected animals were examined by means of a corrosion-cast technique and histology. The hamsters belonged to a laboratory inbred family with a high incidence of coronary artery anomalies and bicuspid aortic valve. The aortic valve was tricuspid in three hamsters and bicuspid in the other six hamsters. In all cases, the right coronary artery was normal,

Nerve fibres in the parathyroid gland of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus): immunohistochemical and ultrastructural investigations.

We investigated the morphology and the distribution of the nerve fibres in golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) parathyroid glands using antibodies to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P, and electron microscopy. CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibres were densely distributed in the interstitial tissues and the capsules of the hamster parathyroid glands. Some nerve fibres were detected in close proximity of the parathyroid chief cells. The distribution pattern for substance P-immunoreactive nerve fibres was roughly the same as for CGRP-immunoreactive fibres. Ultrastructurally, we…

Localization by immunoelectron microscopy of Schistosoma mansoni antigens in the glomerulus of the hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) kidney.

Adult worm antigen (AWA) and soluble egg antigen (SEA) were localized ultrastructurally by immunoelectron microscopy using two monoclonal antibodies in the glomeruli of hamsters infected with Schistosoma mansoni cercariae or injected with S. mansoni eggs. AWA was detected in all cercaria-infected groups from the 30th day on and was present mainly in cytoplasm of mesangial cells, mesangial matrix, and glomerular basement membrane, either as isolated gold particles or in small electron-dense deposits of probable immune origin. AWA was encountered also on the inner side of the glomerular basal me

Characterization of the gastrointestinal microbiome of the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) and comparison to data from mice.

Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) have been increasingly used as rodent models in recent years, especially for SARS-CoV-2 since the pandemic. However, the physiology of this animal model is not yet well-understood, even less when considering the digestive tract. Generally, the gastrointestinal microbiome influences the immune system, drug metabolism, and vaccination efficacy. However, a detailed understanding of the gastrointestinal microbiome of hamsters is missing. Therefore, we analyzed 10 healthy 11-week-old RjHan:AURA hamsters fed a pelleted standard diet. Their gastrointestinal cont…

Morphology of the pattern of branching of the aortic arch (Arcus aortae) in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

The branching patterns of the aortic arches of 28 adult male and female Syrian hamsters (SH) were thoroughly examined under a stereomicroscope for the first time by using latex injection and corrosion casting to determine their general arrangements and morphological variations as well as their differences and similarities to other rodents and rabbits. Three major arteries, namely, the brachiocephalic trunk (BC), left common carotid artery (CC) and left subclavian artery (SA), originating from the aortic arch (AR), were uniformly noted in SH. The BC was consistently divided into the right SA an

Number of coronary ostia in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) with normal and anomalous coronary arteries.

Little attention is being paid to the presence of accessory coronary artery ostia in man and non-human mammals due to their limited clinical relevance. However, information about their frequency and the cardiac territories irrigated by the vessels arising from them is of interest to obtain an accurate survey of the establishment of the coronary artery system in each species. The aim here was to compare the incidence and significance of the accessory coronary ostia in Syrian hamsters with normal coronary arteries and several coronary anomalies characterized by the absence of a left coronary art
