Metabolism of propallylonal.

Urinary metabolism of 5-beta-bromoallyl-5-isopropylbarbituric acid (propallylonal, Noctal), was studied in humans after an oral dose of 400 mg. About 25% of the dose was eliminated via kidneys within 48 h. Besides the unchanged drug, six metabolites could be detected. The main metabolic pathway is the hydrolysis of the beta-bromoallyl side chain to an acetonyl function (approximately 15%). The acetonyl function is subsequently reduced to the corresponding alcohol. Loss of water leads to aprobarbital which is partially oxidized to aprobarbital epoxide. Two further metabolites are formed by part…

Systemic Iron Metabolism.

Iron, a versatile electron donor and acceptor, is essential for life as a component of enzymes and oxygen transporters but also has the potential to cause toxicity when in excess. Its dietary absorption as well as plasma and tissue concentrations are subject to close regulation, systemically coordinated by the interaction of the hepatic peptide hormone hepcidin and its cellular receptor, the iron exporter ferroportin. Ferroportin mediates the delivery of iron to plasma from absorptive enterocytes, from macrophages that digest senescent erythrocytes, and from iron-storing hepatocytes. Hepcidin

Lamins and metabolism.

Lamins are nuclear intermediate filaments (IFs) with important roles in most nuclear activities, including nuclear organization and cell-cyc … n this review, we will discuss the ways by which lamin genes are involved in the regulation of cell metabolism.

Intracellular Salmonella metabolism.

Growth of Salmonella inside infected host cells is a key aspect of their ability to cause local enteritis or systemic disease. This growth depends on exploitation of host nutrients through a large Salmonella metabolism network with hundreds of metabolites and enzymes. Studies in cell culture infection models are unravelling more and more of the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms but also show striking Salmonella metabolic plasticity depending on host cell line and experimental conditions. In vivo studies have revealed a qualitatively diverse, but quantitatively poor, host-Salmonella …

[Folate metabolism dysfunction].

This review examines the history of folate, its metabolism and its relationship to drugs and diseases. The scientific interest in folate has been increasing in recent years because of new findings related to its important role in many diseases like macrocytic anemia, congenital malformations, vascular thrombosis, atherosclerotic disease and cancer. The fascinating puzzle of folate is analyzed and the most recent news about folate treatment in patients with chronic renal failure is reported.

Retinoic acid metabolism.

The tissue distribution of retinoic acid (RA) throughout development is highly restricted, defined by the expression patterns of enzymes involved in RA synthesis and catabolism. Presented is a summary of recent research that examines the role of some of the enzymes involved in RA distribution, particularly those involved in RA catabolism (P450RAI). These latter enzymes protect against premature exposure to RA, and the implications of these findings are discussed.
