Evidence of negative health effects of solid waste management is uncertain. Available reviews suggests the use of biomarkers in human biomonitoring (HBM) to detect low exposure levels. In September 2013, a waste-to-energy plant located in the Turin (Italy) went into operation. The incidence of dermatoses and allergy to metals (Cr, Co, Ni) was determined in 1782 workers exposed to cement, waste fly ash and asbestos cement. The activity of beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase (beta-NAG) was determined in 41 workers of a chemical plant, exposed to metallic mercury, and in 10 controls. A cross-sectional medical evaluation was conducted to determine respiratory and dermatological effects of platinum salts sensitization among workers in a secondary refinery of precious metals.
