Epithelial metaplasia and the development of cancer.

Metaplasia means the conversion, in postnatal life, of one cell type to another. Understanding the steps leading to metaplasia is important for two reasons. Firstly, it tells us something about the normal developmental biology of the tissues that interconvert. Secondly, metaplasia predisposes to certain forms of neoplasia. So understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying metaplasia will provide insights into clinical diagnosis and potential therapies. One of the best-described examples of metaplasia is Barrett's metaplasia or the appearance of intestinal-like columnar tissue i…

[Osseous metaplasia in a colonic adenocarcinoma].

Osseous metaplasia is rare in tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. We report the case of a 76-year-old man presenting with an adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon containing osseous tissue. Calcifications were seen on the abdominal CT-scan. Pathogenesis of the osseous metaplasia is still unknown.

Sebaceous metaplasia in the uterine cervix.

Three cases of an extremely rare occurrence of sebaceous glands in the cervix have been reported. Our findings suggest that these glands develop by sebaceous metaplasia in the regenerative epithelium of ectocervical origin.

Endometrial metaplasia of the uterine endocervix.

We report a case of endometrial metaplasia of the endocervix, which was associated with tubal and squamous metaplasias. The similarity to normal endometrial glands and its benign nature should be recognized, and over-diagnosis of endocervical glandular dysplasia should be avoided.

The gene expression profile of cardia intestinal metaplasia is similar to that of Barrett's esophagus, not gastric intestinal metaplasia.

The etiology and significance of cardia intestinal metaplasia (CIM) is disputed. CIM may represent a form of Barrett's esophagus due to reflux or could reflect generalized gastric intestinal metaplasia due to Helicobacter pylori. The aim of this study was to utilize gene expression data to compare CIM to Barrett's and gastric intestinal metaplasia. Endoscopic biopsies were classified by endoscopic and histologic criteria as CIM (n= 33), Barrett's (n= 25), or gastric intestinal metaplasia of the antrum or body (n= 18). The squamocolumnar and gastroesophageal junctions were aligned in CIM patien…

Clonality analysis and human papillomavirus infection in squamous metaplasia and atypical immature metaplasia of uterine cervix: is atypical immature metaplasia a precursor to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3?

Atypical immature squamous metaplasia (ISM) of the uterine cervix often has histological features that overlap with the histological characteristics of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. To identify the cellular basis and clinical significance of atypical immature metaplasia (AIM), 10 cases of AIM were analyzed for the clonal status, and the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The physical status of HPV was also evaluated in HPV type 16 (HPV-16)-positive cases. Squamous metaplasias with no nuclear atypia (29 mature squamous metaplasias [SMs]) and a single case of ISM …

Laryngeal osseous metaplasia in companion animals.

Laryngeal ossification is a form of heterotopic ossification widely recognized in humans and seldom reported in companion animals, with sele … breeds. Through a logistic regression model, bodyweight was identified as a risk factor for osseous metaplasia in the cricoid and thyroid cartilage in dogs. The ossification score did not differ significantly with concurrent aspiration pneumonia and megaoesophagus, and primary laryngeal disease was seldom observed in dogs with marked ossification. Therefore, …

Cardiac Metaplasia: Follow, Treat, or Ignore?

Over the past two decades, evidence has accumulated to challenge the traditional view that cardiac mucosa, which is comprised exclusively of mucus glands, is the normal lining of the most proximal portion of the stomach (the gastric cardia). There is now considerable evidence to suggest that cardiac mucosa develops as a GERD-induced, squamous-to-columnar esophageal metaplasia in some, if not all, cases. Although cardiac mucosa lacks the goblet cells commonly required for a histologic diagnosis of intestinal metaplasia, cardiac mucosa has many molecular features of an intestinal-type mucosa, an…

Sonographic appearance of endometrial osseous metaplasia.

Osseous metaplasia of the endometrium is a rare condition characterized by the presence of mature or immature bone in the endometrium. Most cases present with secondary infertility following an abortion or chronic endometritis. Some patients are asymptomatic, while others have menstrual abnormalities such as menorrhagia or oligomenorrhea. Removal of the bony fragments helps in spontaneous conception. We hereby present two cases of osseous metaplasia of the endometrium with radiological and pathological correlation.

Dedifferentiated paratesticular liposarcoma with osseous metaplasia.

Paratesticular liposarcoma is a rare tumour of the genitourinary track but the most common of all sarcomas in adults. The dedifferentiated variation occurs only in 10% of liposarcoma cases. The typical clinical presentation is similar to an inguinal hernia or a benign lipoma. We present the case of a dedifferentiated paratesticular liposarcoma with osseous metaplasia of the spermatic cord, in a male presented with acute scrotum.

An unusual breast lump: osseous metaplasia.

We present a rare case of osseous metaplasia in the breast with no other associated breast pathology. A 46-year-old HIV-positive lady presented to the breast clinic with new onset intermittent left-sided mastalgia. Clinical examination revealed an indeterminate mass in the left breast with palpable left axillary lymphadenopathy. Mammography and ultrasonography were suggestive of a possible malignancy, with the latter also detecting the presence of abnormal nodes in the axilla. An ultrasound-guided core biopsy of the breast lesion showed only hyalinised normal breast tissue on two occasions. Ow…
