Comparative analysis of rumen metagenomes with dietary supplementation of 3-nitrooxypropanol revealed divergent modes of action in hydrogen metabolism and reductant pathways between beef and dairy cattle.

BACKGROUND: The compound 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP), an inhibitor of methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR), reduces enteric methane production i … asets (24 beef and 30 dairy cattle) revealed that 3-NOP inhibited mcrA, decreased the abundances of Methanobrevibacter gottschalkii and the protozoal species Isotricha prostoma, while increased the abundances of Methanobrevibacter ruminantium and Methanosphaera sp., Prevotella sp. was a significant bacterial taxon in both beef and dairy cattle, contributing to vario …

Multi-Omics Revealed Resveratrol and β-Hydroxy-β-methyl Butyric Acid Alone or in Combination Improved the Jejunal Function in Tibetan Sheep.

Dietary RES and (or) HMB supplementation significantly increased the abundance of Methanobrevibacter, Actinobacteriota and Bacillus (p < 0.05). The abundance of differential bacteria was positively associated with butyrate concentration (p < 0.05). Metabolome analysis revealed that alpha ketoglutarate, succinic semialdehyde, and diacetyl as well as …

Intestinal microbiota in adult patients with Short Bowel Syndrome: Preliminary results from a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal bacterial flora plays a central role in human intestinal health and disease. Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), a clinical … of Bacteroidetes (p-value = .02), Firmicutes (p-value = .05), Bifidobacterium (p-value < .01), and Methanobrevibacter Smithii (p-value = .04) in SBS patients than controls. CONCLUSIONS: The significantly different fecal microbiome in SBS patients compared with healthy controls could open new perspectives on the care of their intestinal functions.

Incidence of methanogenic bacteria in a sigmoidoscopy population: an association of methanogenic bacteria and diverticulosis.

This study determined the incidence and concentration of methane-producing bacteria in tap water enema samples of 130 individuals taken before sigmoidoscopy. The number of subjects classified in five major colonic groups were as follows: normal colon 36, diverticulosis 57, inflammatory bowel disease 11, colon polyps 34, and colon cancer 11. Some patients were placed in more than one category. Ninety four of the subjects or 72% had methanogenic bacteria ranging in concentration from 6 to about 3 X 10(10)/g dry weight of faeces. The predominant methanogen in all groups was Methanobrevibacter smi…

Mineral packings enhance performance of two-phase anaerobic digestion in leach bed reactors coupled to anaerobic filters: Methane production, Feammox and metabolic pathways.

In this study, zeolite and volcanic rock were used as packings of anaerobic filter (AF) to set up leach bed reactor (LBR)-AF two-phase anaer … ytic and acidogenic bacteria. Simultaneously, mixed packings promoted hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanobrevibacter), enhancing methane content in the biogas. Moreover, iron-reducing bacteria were found and the absolute abundances in the zeolite and mixed group were up to 1277 and 1149, respectively, which indicated the presence of iron-ammonia oxidation (Feammox …

Characterization of bioaerosols from dairy barns: reconstructing the puzzle of occupational respiratory diseases by using molecular approaches.

To understand the etiology of exposure-related diseases and to establish standards for reducing the risks associated with working in contaminated environments, the exact nature of the bioaerosol components must be defined. Molecular biology tools were used to evaluate airborne bacterial and, for the first time, archaeal content of dairy barns. Three air samplers were tested in each of the 13 barns sampled. Up to 10(6) archaeal and 10(8) bacterial 16S rRNA genes per m(3) of air were detected. Archaeal methanogens, mainly Methanobrevibacter species, were represented. Saccharopolyspora rectivirgu…
