The silver methenamine method for the ultrastructural localization of carbohydrates and glycoproteins was applied to the thyroid glands of normal and TSH-treated mice. The majority of the cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum showed a weak, but apparently positive reaction. These findings support the opinion that glycosylation of thyroglobulin occurs initially in the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Nocardiosis is described in two Pesquet's parrots (Psittrichas fulgidus). Granulomatous lesions containing numerous branching, filamentous, acid-fast, gram- and methenamine silver-positive organisms were observed in sections of lung from both parrots, suggesting an oral-respiratory portal of entry. Thyroid follicular hyperplasia and osteoporosis were observed in one parrot, suggesting the presence of an underlying nutritional or metabolic defect.

A 53 year-old man had a three-year recurrent respiratory infection. No fungi was detected in sputum examinations. Immunodiffusion test with paracoccidiodin revealed two precipitin bands. Very small forms and hyphae of a fungus were seen on silver methenamine stained serial sections from lung's lesion. P. brasiliensis was identified on the basis of the rare multibudding small forms.

A patient with AIDS was found to have skin lesions which contained the organisms Pneumocystis carinii and Cryptococcus neoformans. Both organisms were identified using haematoxylin and eosin, Gomori methenamine silver, Giemsa and mucicarmine stains. Electron microscopy was performed and confirmed their presence. The clinical presentation, histopathology, differential diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous P. carinii and C. neoformans in AIDS is presented.

We are reporting a rare case of primary mucocutaneous histoplasmosis. A 47-year-old male with a part-time job of rearing pigeons presented with a non-healing oral ulcer with no associated systemic symptoms. Differential diagnosis of oral ulcerative lichen planus, squamous cell carcinoma and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis was considered. Histopathology showed multiple organisms with a peripheral halo, stained strongly with Gomori methenamine silver stain.

A case of cryptococcosis due to capsule-deficient Cryptococcus is presented, in which culturing of the clinical specimen and tests for capsular antigen in cerebrospinal fluid and serum were negative. The histopathological techniques evaluated were hematoxylin-eosin, Grocott methenamine silver, Mayers mucicarmine and Fontana-Masson. The diagnosis of cryptococcosis due to capsule-deficient Cryptococcus was confirmed by means of the Fontana-Masson technique and by direct immunofluorescence. The potential of the histochemical techniques is discussed.

Rhinosporidiosis is reviewed, and the first autochthonous case in Spain is presented (site: in the nasal cavity of a 19-year-old male from a rural background). Diagnosis was established morphologically after eliminating the possibilities of Cryptococcus neoformans, Coccidioides immitis, and Chrysosporium crescens. Clinico-pathological features are described. Preparations were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, PAS, and methenamine silver, and studied for fluorescence. Certain aspects of the epidemiology and diagnosis are commented upon.
