Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is more frequently seen in young females than in any other age or sex group. Danazol, an impeded a … heir ITP. Therapy produced amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea in 21 patients (84%) and 7 cases of chronic metrorrhagia were successfully controlled. The drug was well tolerated. Accordingly, danazol may be an effective treatment for ITP or related conditions, especially in adult females with uncontrollable metrorrhagia.

BACKGROUND: To assess the diagnostic value of sonohysterography in the evaluation of metrorrhagia and infertility with hysteroscopy as the standard.
METHODS: Sixty-six women, 41 with metrorrhagia, 20 with infertility and five with habitual abortion, were examined by sonohysterography and hysteroscopy. Sterile saline instilled through a baby-feeding tube was used to distend the uterine cavity during sonohysterography. Hysteroscopy was performed with a 4 mm hysteroscope under general anesthesia. The endometrial polyps and submucous myomas were recorded and the findings subsequently compared.

A follow-up study was carried out in 67 healthy women with negative vaginal-cervical cultures after an endometrial curettage for metrorrhagia. Submucous fibroids, polyps and dysfunctional bleeding are responsible for meno-metrorrhagia in women over 40 years of age. The authors describe the technique of hysteroscopic myomectomy and endometrial ablation using the Nd-YAG laser and the advantages of the preoperative use of GnRH agonist therapy. They report their results in a series of 746 patients treated for meno-metrorrhagia (366 cases of myomectomy and 380 cases of endometrial ablation).

Eight hundred and ten patients who accepted to use depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) for contraception were studied over a period of 11 years (1976-1986). Important side-effects observed were amenorrhoea (36.3%), weight gain (15.8%), weight loss (10.6%), metrorrhagia (6.7%) and menorrhagia (6.0%). Amenorrhoea, menorrhagia and metrorrhagia were major reasons for discontinuation of DMPA in 11% of acceptors. There were no cases of pregnancy, genital or breast malignancies during DMPA use.
