Microbiota and the social brain.

Sociability can facilitate mutually beneficial outcomes such as division of labor, cooperative care, and increased immunity, but sociability can also promote negative outcomes, including aggression and coercion. Accumulating evidence suggests that symbiotic microorganisms, specifically the microbiota that reside within the gastrointestinal system, may influence neurodevelopment and programming of social behaviors across diverse animal species. This relationship between host and microbes hints that host-microbiota interactions may have influenced the evolution of social behaviors. Indeed, the g

The Microbiota and Cancer Cachexia.

Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome defined by weight loss, muscle wasting, and systemic inflammation. It affects the majority of patients with advanced cancer and is associated with poor treatment response, early mortality and decreased quality of life. The microbiota has been implicated in cancer cachexia through pathways of systemic inflammation, gut barrier dysfunction and muscle wasting. The imbalance of the microbiota, known as dysbiosis, has been shown to influence cancer cachexia. Bacteria that play beneficial and detrimental roles in the disease pathogenesis have been identif

[Microbiota and metabolic syndrome].

The role of gut bacteria in the pathogenesis and treatment of various diseases has been a focus of attention in the last 10 years. Prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases continues to increase, in spite of technological developments and treatment alternatives. Microbial dysbiosis, described as the decrease of useful bacteria and the increase of harmful bacteria, has been associated with diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndrome. In microbial dysbiosis, increase of harmful metabolites and changes to composition of bile acids occur via carbohydrate and prote

Gut microbiota and the liver.

Nowadays liver diseases represent one of major healthy problems in the world in terms of morbidity and mortality. The high prevalence of liver pathologies represents the key point to understand the necessity to identify the pathogenetic mechanisms that support these disorders in order to nurse them. Alterations of intestinal microbiota seem to play an important role in induction and promotion of liver damage progression, in addition to direct injury resulting from different causal agents. Gut microbiota is considered both as a promoting factor and as a potential therapeutic target of a large n

[Megaesophagus microbiota and carcinogenesis].

BACKGROUND: The risk of development of spin cell carcinoma of the esophagus is 33 times higher in patients with chagasic achalasia. It is possible that the production of N-nitroso compounds in the esophageal lumen by of bacterial action in the stasis liquid that reduce nitrates from diet into nitrites may play a role in this process. AIM: To analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the microbiota in chagasic megaesophagus with special attention to bacteria capable of transforming nitto reduction. PATIENTS: Fifteen patients (six men and nine women) were prospectively studied, with ages varyin

Microbiota of gingivitis in man.

A study on the predominant cultivable microorganisms inhabiting gingival crevices affected with a chronic gingivitis was carried out using the roll tube culture technique. Samples were obtained from nine individuals 25--42 years of age. Gram-positive rods make up 29.1% of the isolates and included mainly Actinomyces naeslundii, Actinomyces israelii, and Actinomyces viscosus. Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus sanguis together made up 26.8% of the cultivable organisms. Peptostreptococcus averaged 3.0% of the organisms recovered. Gram-negative anaerobic rods constituted 25.0% of the total iso

Commensal microbiota regulate aldosterone.

The gut microbiome regulates many important host physiological processes associated with cardiovascular health and disease; however, the impact of the gut microbiome on aldosterone is unclear. Investigating whether gut microbiota regulate aldosterone can offer novel insights into how the microbiome affects blood pressure. In this study, we aimed to determine whether gut microbiota regulate host aldosterone. We used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) to assess plasma aldosterone and plasma renin activity (PRA) in female and male mice in which gut microbiota are intact, suppressed, or a

Faecal microbiota transplantation and glucolipid metabolic disorders: the interventional role of gut microbiota.

Glucolipid metabolic disorders (GLMD) have emerged as a significant global public health issue, posing a significant threat to human health. With changes in modern social structures and an ageing population, the incidence of GLMD is on the rise and is increasingly affecting younger populations. Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) directly modifies the gut microbiota to reestablish its equilibrium and metabolites, consequently reinstating gut barrier integrity, mitigating chronic low-grade inflammation, and affecting the onset and progression of GLMD through the regulation of the gut-liver

Ciprofloxacin-induced microbiota dysbiosis triggers seizure susceptibility through the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is linked to inflammation and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Ciprofloxacin-induced microbiota disruption may increase seizure susceptibility. This study investigates underlying mechanisms and the therapeutic potential of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). METHODS: A total of 64 male Sprague-Dawley rats were categorized into four experimental groups: Control (CTRL), Ciprofloxacin-treated (CPF), CPF with fecal microbiota transplantation (CPF-FMT), and CPF with phosphate-buffered saline (CPF-PBS). Gut microbiota dysbiosis was induced with ciprofloxacin for 14 days, followed

Fecal microbiota transplantation in ulcerative colitis: mucosal immune mechanisms and precision microbiota therapy.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has emerged as an investigational microbiota-targeted strategy for ulcerative colitis (UC), aiming to restore dysbiotic gut ecosystems and microbiota-host homeostasis. Mechanistic studies suggest that FMT may reshape microbial community structure, enrich short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, remodel bile acid and tryptophan-aryl hydrocarbon signaling, enhance epithelial barrier integrity, and regulate mucosal immunity, including Th17/Treg balance, IgA-associated responses, macrophage reprogramming, IL-10/IL-22 signaling, and neutrophil extracellular

Natural antibodies induced by host gut microbiota modulate tick microbiota, inhibiting Borrelia colonization.

The gut microbiome undergoes natural selection pressure, likely because it can affect infection resistance by stimulating natural antibody (NAb) production, notably against the glycan Galα1-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc-R (α-Gal). In our study, we explored whether particular glycans, such as α-Gal, from specific host microbiota components could trigger NAbs that, once ingested by Ixodes ricinus ticks during the blood meal, are capable of cross-reacting with bacterial strains in the tick microbiota that share these glycans. Such interactions might alter the tick microbiota and reduce Borrelia afzelii coloniza

Periodontitis salivary microbiota exacerbates colitis by CXCL3 derived from gut microbiota-induced macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Increasing research has focused on the role of the oral-gut axis in the development of colitis. Saliva contains a large number of oral bacteria that influence gut microbiota and colitis, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role and mechanisms of gut microbiota in salivary microbiota-affected colitis. RESULTS: We confirmed that periodontitis salivary microbiota (PSM) exacerbated colitis compared to healthy salivary microbiota (HSM). Antibiotics could reverse the effect of PSM in exacerbating colitis, suggesting that the altered gut micro

Gut microbiota diversity after autologous fecal microbiota transfer in acute myeloid leukemia patients.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) intensive chemotherapy combined with broad-spectrum antibiotics, leads to gut microbiota dysbiosis promoting pathological conditions and an increased incidence of complications. Here we report findings from a phase II single-arm, multicenter study evaluating autologous fecal microbiota transfer (AFMT) in 25 AML patients treated with intensive chemotherapy and antibiotics (ClinicalTrials.gov number: NCT02928523). The co-primary outcomes of the study are to evaluate the efficacy of AFMT in dysbiosis correction and multidrug-resistant bacteria eradication. The main se

Altered Gut Microbiota in HIV Infection: Future Perspective of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Therapy.

HIV infection progressively destroys CD4+ mononuclear cells, leading to profound cellular immune deficiency that manifests as life-threatening opportunistic infections and malignancies (i.e., AIDS). Gut microbiota plays key roles in the modulation of host metabolism and gene expression, maintenance of epithelial integrity, and mediation of inflammatory and immunity. Hence, the normal intestinal microbiota plays a major role in the maintenance of health and disease prevention. In fact, a large number of studies have shown that the alteration of the gut microbiota contributes to the pathogenesis

Gut microbiota alterations are associated with uterine immune homeostasis via microbiota-metabolite interactions.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine inflammation is a major cause of infertility and is commonly associated with local bacterial infection. However, the association between gut microbiota and uterine immune homeostasis remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between gut microbiota dysbiosis and uterine inflammation, and to identify microbiota-associated factors linked to host immune responses. METHODS: An antibiotic-induced dysbiosis mouse model was established, followed by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), microbial supplementation, metabolite interv

Fecal microbiota transplantation alleviates sepsis-associated encephalopathy by reshaping gut microbiota and metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a diffuse brain dysfunction secondary to sepsis; however, its pathogenesis remains poorly defined. This study characterizes gut-microbiota-brain axis dysbiosis and aberrant tryptophan metabolism in SAE, providing a multi-dimensional framework to understand the underlying pathways. METHODS: SAE was induced in rats via cecal ligation and puncture, with Sham and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) groups as controls. Cognitive and emotional functions were assessed using the open field and novel object recognition tests. Gut microbiota and

Mother-to-infant microbiota transmission and infant microbiota development across multiple body sites.

Early-life microbiota seeding and subsequent development is crucial to future health. Cesarean-section (CS) birth, as opposed to vaginal delivery, affects early mother-to-infant transmission of microbes. Here, we assess mother-to-infant microbiota seeding and early-life microbiota development across six maternal and four infant niches over the first 30 days of life in 120 mother-infant pairs. Across all infants, we estimate that on average 58.5% of the infant microbiota composition can be attributed to any of the maternal source communities. All maternal source communities seed multiple infant
