OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the cariogenicity of various fluids that are frequently fed to infants and toddlers. Lactoferrin from human milk, pancreatic juice and bovine milk were purified by heparin-Sepharose affinity chromatography procedure. Urea-sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of these lactoferrin preparations indicated similar molecular weights (80,000). It is known that breast milk empties more quickly from the stomach than does infant formula. We studied the difference in gastroduodenal motility between neonates fed with human milk and those fed with infant formula. In the present work, somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) in human milk was characterized. In the early postpartum period, SLI levels were highest on the first day after delivery, and then gradually declined. From the fifth day postpartum, SLI levels in milk seemed unchanged. On the fifth day after delivery, milk SLI was significantly (p less than 0.01) higher than plasma SLI (126.3 +/- 11.7 vs. 17.6 +/- 1.1 pmol/L). OBJECTIVE: Donor human milk (DHM) is excess breast milk a woman donates to a human milk bank (HMB) for use by another infant. HMB requires operational sustainability to ensure consistent and equitable DHM supply.
