The rising demand for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in the United States has led to high 1-year patient satisfaction rates. However, some patients experience substantial declines in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) postoperatively, which we refer to as "minimal clinically important difference for worsening" (MCID-W). We sought to define MCID-W values for specific PROMs and identify risk factors associated with PROMIS Physical Function Short Form 10a (PROMIS PF-10a) declines after UKA. We conducted a retrospective study of 760 patients undergoing UKA at our institution betwe…

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Measurement tools for sleep inertia, a common and important idiopathic hypersomnia symptom, are limited. For individuals with idiopathic hypersomnia, this post hoc analysis proposes a minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for the Sleep Inertia Visual Analog Scale (SI-VAS), which assesses difficulty waking up.
METHODS: Data from the pivotal phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized withdrawal study (NCT03533114) of low-sodium oxybate in adults with idiopathic hypersomnia were used to estimate an SI-VAS MCID anchored to the Patient Global Impression of Cha…

BACKGROUND: Hay fever is a common allergic disease, with an estimated worldwide prevalence of 14.4% and a variety of symptoms. This study assessed the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of nasal symptom score (NSS), non-nasal symptom score (NNSS), and total symptoms score (TSS) for app-based hay-fever monitoring.
METHODS: MCIDs were calculated based on the data from a previous large-scale, crowdsourced, cross-sectional study using AllerSearch, an in-house smartphone application. MCIDs were determined with anchor-based and distribution-based methods. The face scale score of the Jap…

BACKGROUND: Outcomes after aseptic revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) are variable, and it is unknown whether the indication for aseptic revision THA influences postoperative clinical improvement. The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) assesses if changes in patient-reported outcome measure result in meaningful clinical benefit to patients. The purpose of this study was to quantify the 1-year postoperative MCID for aseptic revision THA and to assess the percentage of patients achieving the MCID for each revision diagnosis.
METHODS: A prospective, single-institution registry of …

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The 8-item Overactive Bladder Questionnaire (OAB-V8) is a readily available instrument for assessing overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms in clinical and research settings. Despite its established validity in Turkish, its psychometric property remains unevaluated. This study aimed to determine the responsiveness, minimal detectable change (MDC), and minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of the Turkish version of the OAB-V8.
METHODS: This retrospective study consisted of 160 women (age 47.49 ± 12.07 years) with OAB who completed a standardized, guideline-adhe…

IMPORTANCE: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) allow clinicians and researchers to assess health-related information from a patient's perspective. These measures have been used more frequently over the last several decades, but an associated minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is needed to optimize their utility. This narrative review identified the top 100 most-cited otolaryngology-related PROM development and validation publications and assessed the presence and characteristics of the PROMs' associated MCID.
OBSERVATIONS: In this narrative review, a literature search in Sc…

Rationale: The 6-minute-walk distance (6MWD) is an important clinical and research metric in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH); however, there is no consensus about what minimal change in 6MWD is clinically significant. Objectives: We aimed to determine the minimal clinically important difference in the 6MWD. Methods: We performed a meta-analysis using individual participant data from eight randomized clinical trials of therapy for PAH submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to derive minimal clinically important differences in the 6MWD. The estimates were externally validated u…

BACKGROUND: It is well known that clinical improvements following surgical intervention are variable. While all surgeons strive to maximize reliability and degree of improvement, certain patients will fail to achieve meaningful gains. We aim to analyze patients who failed to reach minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in an effort to improve outcomes for minimally invasive deformity surgery.
METHODS: Data were collected on a multicenter registry of minimally invasive surgery adult spinal deformity surgeries. Patient inclusion criteria were age ≥18 years, coronal Cobb ≥20 degrees, pel…

BACKGROUND: The present study explores the effect of sociodemographics and comorbidities on the calculated minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) scores in patients with medically treated chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The importance of delineating a threshold to indicate clinically meaningful changes perceived by a patient is well acknowledged, yet the influence of patient-specific factors on MCID has not been fully elucidated.
METHODS: Patients with CRS (n = 221) presenting to a tertiary care practice reported their change in disease burde…

No consensus exists about the minimal clinically important difference for the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire, which hampers its clinical application. This study assessed the minimal clinically important difference of this questionnaire. The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire was completed by 180 patients, with clinically defined carpal tunnel syndrome, preoperatively and at about 8 months follow-up after carpal tunnel release, together with a six-point scale for perceived improvement. Receiver operator characteristics curves showed that relative changes in Symptom Severity Scale and Functi…

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction is a common and defining symptom of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Many measures of olfactory dysfunction in CRS are limited by scoring criteria defined within general populations with interpretations of statistical significance to infer clinically meaningful improvement. In this investigation we define a minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for the Brief Smell Identification Test (BSIT) in CRS patients electing endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).
METHODS: A multicenter cohort of 290 adult patients electing ESS for medically recalcitrant CRS were prospec…

To determine the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) of the Heinrichs-Carpenter Quality of Life Scale (QLS). Data from the "Schizophrenia Trial of Aripiprazole" (STAR) study were used in this analysis. The MCID value of the QLS total score was estimated using the anchor-based method. These findings were substantiated/validated by comparing the MCID estimate to other measurements collected in the study. Half of the patients (49%) showed improvement in Clinical Global Impressions of Severity (CGI-S) during the trial. The estimated MCID of the QLS total score was 5.30 (standard error: …
