An epidemiologic summary of the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Minnesota.

A cumulative total of 3,202 AIDS cases and 2,355 non-AIDS cases of HIV infection have been diagnosed in Minnesota and reported to the Minnesota Department of Health since 1982. The number of AIDS cases and HIV infection cases diagnosed annually peaked five to 10 years ago. New treatments for HIV infection have led to a marked reduction in mortality. The number of deaths due to AIDS/HIV in 1997 (76) was the lowest number in Minnesota since 1986. Several trends continue to evolve in reported AIDS/HIV cases. First, the proportion of female cases has increased over time. Second, male-to-male sex r…

Otosclerosis: the University of Minnesota temporal bone collection.

A study of 1452 human temporal bones revealed a previously unpublished material of 144 bones with otosclerosis. After exclusion of infants and individuals of races other than white, the incidence of otosclerosis was 12.75%. Of the bones with otosclerosis, 56.1% belonged to men and 43.9% to women. The incidence of clinical and histologic otosclerosis was practically the same for men (44.7% to 55.3%) as for women (47% to 53%). However, the incidence of bilateral otosclerosis was higher in women (88.9%) than in men (65.2%). Bilateral otosclerosis was present in 75.6%, whereas it was unilateral in

An outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in central Minnesota.

The only confirmed outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in the continental United States during 1982 occurred in Brainerd, Minnesota. The disease first appeared in a 27-year-old woman during a trip to Tahiti. The patient's two daughters (8 months old and 3 years old) developed mild conjunctivitis two days later. Although the symptoms of all three had completely resolved before they arrived in Brainerd, illness compatible with acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis developed in five other individuals who shared a house with them there. Symptoms appeared within two days in four of the five and…

Intensive hepatitis surveillance in Minnesota: methods and results.

After a large foodborne outbreak of hepatitis A in April 1974, the Minnesota Department of Health attempted to improve ongoing hepatitis surveillance with a system based on 1) a large centralized blood bank, which reports results of tests for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) on suspected hepatitis patients; 2) private physicians, who are encouraged to report cases; and 3) an epidemiology aide, who contacts all detected patients and their physicians. During the first year of this system, we detected 932 cases (24.5 per 100,000), a threefold increase over previous years, and obtained detailed…

Cronobacter Surveillance in Minnesota, United States, 2002-2024.

Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic pathogen associated with bloodstream infections and meningitis in neonates and infants. C. sakazakii isolated from infants under 1 year of age has been reportable in Minnesota since 2003. Invasive Cronobacter infections in infants was recently made notifiable nationally in 2024. Therefore, this summary of over 20 years of reportable surveillance for C. sakazakii from Minnesota infants will inform other jurisdictions. During 2002-2024, 23 C. sakazakii cases in infants, including 8 invasive and 15 non-invasive cases, were identified and confirmed using M…

Molecular Epidemiology of Blastomyces gilchristii Clusters, Minnesota, USA.

We characterized 2 clusters of blastomycosis cases in Minnesota, USA, using whole-genome sequencing and single-nucleotide polymorphism analyses. Blastomyces gilchristii was confirmed as the cause of infection. Genomic analyses corresponded with epidemiologic findings for cases of B. gilchristii infections, demonstrating the utility of genomic methods for future blastomycosis outbreak investigations.

Mortality experience among Minnesota taconite mining industry workers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the mortality experience of Minnesota taconite mining industry workers. METHODS: Mortality was evaluated between 1960 and 2010 in a cohort of Minnesota taconite mining workers employed by any of the seven companies in operation in 1983. Standardised mortality ratios (SMR) were estimated by comparing observed deaths in the cohort with expected frequencies in the Minnesota population. Standardised rate ratios (SRR) were estimated using an internal analysis to compare mortality by employment duration. RESULTS: The cohort included 31,067 workers with at least 1 year of doc…

Foley catheter practices and knowledge among Minnesota physicians.

BACKGROUND: Urinary catheter use is common, and physicians are often unaware of the presence of a catheter in a patient. Despite this, and despite a recent policy change classifying catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) as nonreimbursable, little is known regarding physicians' knowledge and attitudes regarding catheters, or their responses to the policy change. METHODS: Licensed Minnesota physicians were sent an Internet-based survey regarding indications for Foley catheter placement, effectiveness of interventions for preventing CAUTI, and knowledge of and response to the chang…

Infective endocarditis. Olmsted County, Minnesota, 1950 through 1981.

Strict criteria were used to identify all definite, probable, and possible cases of endocarditis in residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, from 1950 through 1981. The mean annual age- and sex-adjusted incidence rates per 100,000 person-years were 3.8 for total cases and 3.2 for definite and probable cases only. Total rates were 4.3 for 1950 through 1959, 3.3 for 1960 through 1969, and 3.9 for 1970 through 1981. Rheumatic heart disease was the underlying disorder in 26% of cases, with a shift noted during 1970 through 1981 to involvement of prosthetic rather than natural valves in these patien…

Sedimentary record of antibiotic accumulation in Minnesota Lakes.

The widespread detection of antibiotics in the environment is concerning because antibiotics are designed to be effective at small doses. The objective of this work was to quantify the accumulation rates of antibiotics used by humans and animals, spanning several major antibiotic classes (sulfonamides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and macrolides), in Minnesota lake-sediment cores. Our goal was to determine temporal trends, the major anthropogenic source to these lacustrine systems, and the importance of natural production. A historical record of usage trends for ten human and/or animal-use…

First Report of Ditylenchus dipsaci on Garlic in Minnesota.

In the summer of 2011, two independent garlic samples from Morrison and Dakota counties and in 2012 one garlic sample from Carver county in Minnesota were submitted by commercial growers to the University of Minnesota Plant Disease Clinic for disease analyses. Symptoms of the above-ground plant parts were stunting and chlorosis. Symptoms of bulbs were necrosis, underdevelopment, and distortion. Upon microscopic examination, phytonematodes exuded into the surrounding water droplet. Nematodes were present in the protective leaves, abscission zone, and cloves in all submitted bulbs (n = 18) for a…

Characteristics of mercury speciation in Minnesota rivers and streams.

Patterns of mercury (Hg) speciation were examined in four Minnesota streams ranging from the main-stem Mississippi River to small tributaries in the basin. Filtered phase concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic Hg (IHg), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were higher in all streams during a major summertime runoff event, and DOC was enriched with MeHg but not with IHg. Particulate-phase MeHg and IHg concentrations generally increased with total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations but the event data did not diverge greatly from the non-event data, suggesting that sources of suspende…

Cryptosporidiosis outbreak in a recreational swimming pool in Minnesota.

On May 6, 1998, the Olmsted County Public Health Department initiated an investigation into an outbreak of diarrheal illness that had occurred among people who swam frequently at a local swimming pool. Interviews of swimmers and microbiological testing of stool samples and swimming pool filter material were conducted to determine the source of the outbreak. Twenty-six of 206 swimmers interviewed had illnesses that met the case definition. The most common symptoms were diarrhea (100 percent), abdominal cramps (81 percent), and nausea (77 percent). The median duration of symptoms was nine days.

The impact of foodborne calicivirus disease: the Minnesota experience.

The first outbreaks of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis in Minnesota were confirmed in 1982. Since then, Norwalk-like caliciviruses have been recognized to be the most common cause of foodborne disease outbreaks, accounting for 41% of all confirmed foodborne outbreaks in Minnesota from 1981-1998. Although laboratory confirmation of caliciviruses in stool samples was not attempted in most of these outbreaks, all conformed to epidemiologic criteria for defining outbreaks of Norwalk virus. Since 1996, the availability of polymerase chain reaction testing at the Minnesota Department of Health has all…
